People around the world need help, because of disasters, or poor economy or ill health. They call this help different things in different places, but I think it is pretty common for people to do this. It can take the form of clicking sites that donate from ads, like Freerice.com or it can be doing a run or walk with sponsors donating for your efforts. Donating money to church or other benevolent funds helps as well. When you do not have money to spend you can help with promotion and mailing and giving out information. I know I have friends on here who set up activities for orphans and other less fortunate people. I participate through my church in several things, and I give blood and platelets, which is something that only takes my time and not my money. So do you donate, or volunteer, or give alms? How do you help others? It does not have to be organized either. I think of one member here who bears with a roommate who has dementia, and another person who helps her parents. Helping animals is also a charity as well as supporting clean and green efforts.

Our help is usually on a small scale.
We donate to and shop from thrift stores that help certain charities. Like the thrift store that is run by our local Humane Society, and one called Blessingdales which in turn gives the money to Christian Maternity Homes and outreach programs for low income neighborhoods.
Or, on an even smaller scale than that, like just this afternoon a homeless guy came into the KFC were we were having lunch and bought himself a small coke, then sat at a table nursing his drink, so I told my MIL we should give him something, and we made sure he had a meal before we left.

That is awesome. You have the heart and eyes to see a nearby need. From your post I get the feeling that you and your mother in law are pretty close. That is a good thing.

A lady spoke to the waitress who was waiting on me for my order. the waitress came over and said the lady had paid for my lunch. I was speechless but I got up ande went and thanked here. She told me to pass it forwards so I learned about the organization, and I loved it.

I was blessed with my mother in law. I thank my luck stars every time I hear a MIL horror story because she and I get along GREAT.
Hately, its wonderful that nice lady was there to give you a boot when you needed it. Have you "paid it forward" since?

I have not been to freerice or the hunger site in a while, I need to go back. When you combine your efforts with those of others in your church you help many more people. Do not be critical of what you do not do, but rather be proud of what you do accomplish

I will always try to help other people in the world if I have the time and money to do so. At the moment, I am a charity fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in the UK, and I will try to raise at least a few thousand pounds each year for them. I am doing very well at this, and I know that it is something that I am going to continue doing in the future simply because of the fact that it is so rewarding to be able to help children who aren't expected to live beyond the age of 40. It is wonderful to be able to make a difference, and not something that I am planning on changing any time soon if I can help it.

You have found your heart in this charity. That is how I feel about donating blood and platelets. You have a talent for raising funds for this charity and I can tell you are really passionate about it.

yup I do help other, but I only help them who deserves some help.I hate those arrogant people who are always waiting to do something by other's help. Yes everyone we need help in our whole life in return we should also repay the worth of help by helping them too.

I guess it is important to use our discretion to help those who can benefit the most or who have a genuine need.

I help people all the time or whenever i get a chance to. My husband doesnt really like it because i help the 'wrong' type of ppl u know the ones who take advantage of me..but most ppl dont help me. when i need help, they turn their backs on me when i need them most. when that happens i just turn a blind eye and ignore it. i dont know when im gonna see the bigger picture maybe someday....u wanna know how i help. i donate clothes and food to the poor. i have also sent someone to college(a poor teenager) and i go to mexico every year and sing and donate clothes and whatever i can get my hands on i give them to those less fortunate than me. im not rich by any means but then again im not living pay check to paycheck like i was a few yrs ago. i help them out because i can totally relate to what they are going thru and i understand what it means to live in poverty.
but for all it's worth im glad u helping thru ur church u have a good soul!

I had a pastor once express to me when I was discouraged by someone taking advantage of me that people took unfair advantage of Jesus all the time. It is just what happens, but that does not make the help any less needed. You sound like a busy and giving person. This summer a group of kids from our high school group at church are going to Haiti, along with four or five adults. They are going to help repair damaged schools. They get to take hundreds of dresses for girls and shorts for the boys that people in our church and other places have been making. It is exciting.

that's true..we could send our help in a lot of ways..if there is anyone who is grieving because of loosing their family from disasters, we could comfort them by telling them soothing words or by just being there for them..listening to their heart and giving hope that there's One above that hears every sorrowful heart..

There are people who desperately need a listening ear. Sometimes they are here on MyLot. It may take a good and open heart to see and meet those needs.

As one line says "No man is an Island." We live for one another. One cannot exists in this world alone. I believe that each one of us has a heart on helping others who are in need. I also believe that each one of us has goodness in our heart even those notorious criminals have goodness within themselves. They just become bad because of the society--because of the environment they belong with.
I love helping others. It gives me a sense of peace and happiness within. I especially feel so much happiness for those people I help with whom I know cannot return the favor back to me. I love helping people who are very poor and still find ways to survive in this world.

The joy of giving is a blessing to you and to the ones you help. No one is really poor if they can give something away. I am hoping to hear from lots of very giving people on my discussion today.

Both of those are so neat. If you help someone read better you are assisting them in having a better life. People in hospitals often need that little bit of extra care.

I prefer to help at an individual level and directly to those in need but never to NGO's as one never knows where that money goes. I did commit a mistake recently when I donated to an organisation that takes care of animals on recommendation from my Vet but I am not satisfied with what they are doing with that money. But at an individual level I do a lot. I sponsored the education of a girl, and also got her married and built a house for her. I have a trust meant for helping out those who are in need be it education, health, or any genuine causes.

You bring up a really good point here. It is important to make sure that the charities and organizations we support do not mismanage the funds we give them. It is good that you can help people on an individual basis.

I'm so touched when people are in need. In my place everyone offer a helping hands.I just love seeing a community like this. They mean to help people in need. In an orphanage I used to have my account auto pay yearly and have it have donated to those orphan children. In time of calamities though my place seldom experience those hard times I don't have second thought of sending my donations to those places experiencing disasters and calamities.

that it is not always help but I can give old clothes even when I have more money but sometimes if I had a lot of money I would always give to all who need it.
helping others, this means that there are a good and loving heart, and that deserves respect.
interesting discussion.

It is important to give things that can still be used. I often wish I had more money to give to others, as well. It is a way to show what is in your heart.

I notice the word CARE in caregiver. It takes a lot sometimes to care, but it means so much to others when someone does that. Some people may not realize how hard some of those power chairs are to manage and that people do need help to make them go right.

typo should be pass it forward. you are helped but the helper refuses any remuneration from you and tells you pass it on.
so I found person needing help in English grammar and
I tutored her for free. she wanted to pay me but I told
her I belonged to the pass it forward club. so just find someone else who needs help and help them, like I did you.

I've always given to the church and to Salvation Army and Goodwill. I can't stand Girl Scout cookies of any kind, but I always donate money to them when they're selling.
Beyond that, I usually listen to my heart. One day last week, I was in a pharmacy and as I went down one aisle, I heard a guy talking to his brother. It was obvious that the one in the store was not as well off as the brother he called. The guy in the store was trying to get to work and his old car needed a $12.47 part and the brother on the other end obviously was saying "I've helped you enough over the years..."
I didn't know this guy from Adam, but I handed him a $20 and told him to pass it on. I don't have extra $20s hanging around, but I think he reminded me of my brother who passed away about 7 years ago.
Anyway....my heart wasn't wrong. The pharmacy clerk told me that the guy I'd given money to filled up the tank of her friend who is a single mom who is struggling with the instructions for her to pass it on when she's able.

What a neat story, Kenzie and what a blessing as well. There are a lot of places to give and that makes your $20 go a lot further.

Hi Gerty,, I think it is always better to give and help others
especially when you give from your heart...
I love giving people items, good items, not just stuff I no longer
want...I give to my neighbor and friends..I donate to the church.
I think helping is just the right thing to do...I believe giving
comes with blessings and who couldn't use blessings...

Just in my occupation I help people everyday. I work in a nursing home. I care for the elderly who have become frail and ill and can no longer do certain activities of daily living on their own. I work in the regular wings and also on the Alzheimer's unit where I help not only the residents but their families who are trying to come to grips with dealing with the disease. I help my friends and family when they are in need, be it favours such as looking after their pets while they go away or a monetary loan. Helping or donating does not always have to be in the form of money.
I also help people from around the world through an organization called Kiva. I choose kiva because it is a respected organization and 100% of your money, in the form of a loan, goes to the person in need. I try to make a loan through Kiva every payday and will probably use any online earnings for this purpose as well. If anyone is interested in Kiva, here is the link. http://www.kiva.org/

I have worked in nursing homes and the caregivers there do need to be real carers, not just employees. I will look at kiva and I hope others do as well.
