Hi all, Every one says that Open & Close are opposite words. But you will be more OPEN to those who are CLOSE to you/us. I think it is the fact. What do you think and why? Thanks for sharing and thinking..... Happy Lotting and have a nice time.

English is a truly confusing language, isn't it! The word 'close' can mean several quite different things (though they are actually related, as I will show). As a verb it is pronounced with a 'z' sound - /kloz/ (to rhyme with 'those', 'doze' and 'froze') - and is a synonym of 'shut' and the antonym ("opposite") of 'open'. When it is used as an adjective ("My close friends", "close by") it means "near" and is pronounced with an 's' sound - /klos/ (to rhyme with 'dose'). It can also be used as a noun meaning 'a small enclosed piece of land'. All three of its meanings come from the same idea of something being shut off from something else. If your friends are close to you, it means that they are in your 'inner circle' of people whom you trust and, figuratively, you enclose them with you or 'close the door on the outside world' (with your friends inside, of course). When the word is used to mean 'near' it means that if you drew a small circle around where you are, whatever it is that is close to you would be within that circle - 'enclosed' by the circle ... just a short distance away. 'Close by' is sometimes used to mean exactly the same (in terms of distance) as 'near by' but it is very often used to mean something a little closer than 'near' (if you see what I mean!)

Thank you TheSids. I don't remember the response or the discussion so it cannot have been too bad, after all! @ viju0410: It is mainly through seeing other people's difficulties with English that I am forced to do a 'double take' ... and learn what a lot I take for granted and what a complex thing language really is. That has helped me no end in my writing because I am learning to read back what I have written and to spot things which might not be so clear to others as they are to me!

Hi owlwings, I loved your English lesson and thanks for the same. Definitely, the words carry different meanings and in actual life too they can vary as per the circumstances. You have rightly pointed out the inner circle and the outer world. Thank you for nicely representation in the last para. Cheers! Sid - Good to see your openness in the closed matter....

viju look close has several meanings like close the door or shut it. close also means something very near to you,So open means to b bring something up or just get the door open but close in thus context means shut the door or whatever it was we opened., also close means something is very near and in talking of people we mean someone is very dear to us and is always near in one or more senses. so it depends on how we are using it. Open is also used in several ways too.Like I am always open to my sister as I am very close to her. Open to l et in, close meaning near physically or emotionally

Hi Hatley, yes, it depends upon the situations and the meaning of the term at different circumstances. Thanks for the example quoted.

hello viju, Upon reading other responses, I've learned from them. Thanks for this topic. Well, I knew one thing about "close/open" we teach little babies with "close-open" while holding their hands. And babies will close and open their palms

I am glad that you asked. I think the confusion was created by blonds. Now, the problem is so deeply entrenched that they are not able to remove it. So they adjust to any meaning ..lol Kidding. Owlwing's explanation is right, as usual.

Hi, Honestly speaking - there was no confusion for me but for discussion sake i started it that way. But yes, i do admit i never thought our other members can throw so much light on this and even ask for a treat of chocos / coffee. No complaints and it really makes me happy to be in this circle. How is the weather in Hyd? in Bhopal its 40 Degree. take care.

Yes,the two words are opposite to each other. For example, doors may be either close or shut. But it all depends on how you use it.Your mind may be open to receive the suggestions someone is giving you. Here your mind is receptive of any suggestion that you think is right or practical for you.Or,it may be close to them. That means, you feel what you think is right or practical and that you are reluctant to let any other suggestion in.

hi else, yep, if the doors are shut, they are close(near) to each other but also closed to the other world. yes, it is our mind how open it is to accept our closed ones. right? Being practical always give us a practical solutions. happy lotting!

If you mean, the word 'open' can be used in two senses,'allowing to come in', 'vulnerable' and 'receptive',I do agree with you.Similarly, the word 'close' can also be used in three senses;'near', 'that which can't get affected' and 'about to'.Am I right?

i think the words just have two different meanings. i also don't think it's true that because you are close to someone that you will be open. sometimes you can be more open with a perfect stranger.

Hi viju... As the first respondent has mentioned it depends on the meaning. When we were highschool students we were taught as "OPEN the door"s direct opposite is "SHUT the door". and again there is a option to change your line " but you will be more OPEN to those who are DEAR/NEAR to you/us" lol Have a nice time.

Hi shibham, Ok.. but then we normally say that we are open to those who are close to us and vis-a-vis. and not necessary that all the nears and dears are open to you. LOL. So.. by now, hope you are more 'open' to your beau. have a nice time.

I think it all depends on how you use them. It can be used as opposites or other meaning like you have said.

hi, As the other responses i agree it could depend on term to term and meaning can go without the actual meaning of the words... however opposites are not always seen as opposites in meaning of life'f experiences.

It depends on in what meaning we use the word close, I guess. Like something closed or something really near... but actually, the two meanings are really close (no pun intended) to each other, because when somebody is close to us emotionally, it's like we have a closed circuit :D.
