Friend or Foe?

My husband and I watched a movie today called "The Darkest Hour" in which aliens, who were essentially nothing but balls of energy, invaded. They pretty much killed every person and started mining for energy rich minerals in the earths core. During the movie while our main characters wer looking for survivors I told my husband that I thought if Malicious aliens ever DID attack our planet, that they woudln't leave enough humans alive for us to build an uprising against them. He said he thought they would, or that it depended on what they wanted us for, if they wanted the planet, or if the wanted/needed slaves. That is assuming they were MEAN aliens. Just for fun, what do you think? If aliens invaded tomorrow morning would they wipe humanity off the face of the earth, or would they keep us around for one reason or another?

It's really difficult to tell what these aliens gonna do to us if that thing comes. Hmmm... If they can invade us that would only mean they are advance in terms of technology or they have this kind of power that a human being can't stand a chance to a one-on-one fight. Going back to the question, why keep us around if they can manage themselves and humans have no use to them.

I'm pretty sure that if they are advanced enough to REACH us, they are advanced enough to wipe us out. Unless this hypothetical invasion comes so many years in the future that we are advanced enough for warp speed deep space travel like in sci-fi shows and movies. My husband seems to think the aliens might initially attack and kill a lot, but in the end would want to keep us around for slaves or for a food source, or even just for experimentation.

Oh, I wasn't thinking of humans as a power source, but more like a food soucre. If you've ever seen that old Twilight Zone episode where the aliens came and were all helpful and taking the humans on their ship and one man realizes their book "To Serve Man" isn't about "serving" humans but was in fact a cook book. Or the aliens in War of the Worlds. Which makes me wonder, of course, if any alien lifeforms, no matter how powerful or advanced COULD survive in the toxic atmosphere of our germy world.

What I was picturing about aliens are may be different on how you imagine them. What's playing on my mind is that these aliens are some kind of creature whom(?) are dependent on energy source like electricity or something that can empower themselves not by eating humans to regain their power.

Our survival chances would really depend on what the alien war aims were. If they wanted to exterminate us and don't care what condition they leave the Earth in, they could do that by changing the orbits of a few large asteroids (ie several miles across, Dinosaur-killer class) and dropping them on us. If they want the planet basically intact but want us out of the way, they could drop smaller asteroids on all our cities to eliminate the bulk of the population then use more conventional tactics to kill the rest of us - in that case there would probably be a few scattered holdouts living in caves and suchlike. If they just want our mineral resources and aren't bothered about occupation, they could threaten us with the above unless our governments organise the mining activities themselves and deliver the products to specified areas for collection - that leaves us alive but impoverished. On the other hand, they might be after something more intangible like converting us all to their religion - in which case resistance tactics might revolve around more subtle methods like practicing Earthly religions in secret, underground "samizdat" type publications and trying to convert their missionairies to our points of view.

Because the alien god is the one true god, after all.

I have no idea- movies abut them are just based on human's imagination- we don't even know what they look like , we don't know anything about them or if they even exist at all. I just hope that they are good if ever they invade us and want peace.

I too would hope that they would want peace, but depending on if they watch us for a while first they might decide that WE are a dangerous and deadly species that needs to be dealt with harshly.

Aliens? Well excuse my skepticism, but I think we are just at the moment (and it is appropriate to say) light years from being attacked by alien life forms. This is despite many movies (remember such as "Independence Day") have proposed several times on the screen science-fiction films related to attacks by alien forces. Probably, these episodes do want to reflect that in the distant future, will be the same humanity, against herself who risks self-destruction. There is absolutely no need to attack by other species to destroy the humanity! This is my theory.

You are right. In all likelyhood humankind will kill ourselves out long before aliens are ever likely to invade.
