Are having dreams indication of a deep sleep?

I used to think that if I have vivid dreams the other night and I can still remember them in the morning that means for me that I had a good night sleep last night. I had a time in my life where I don't have any dreams at sleep and as if my sleep is too shallow, I wake up the other day not feeling energized with my sleep.
Though, I believe I have fallen asleep when I have detached awareness of what is going on and I do not know what time is it. When we have a good dream the other night, does it mean we really had a good night sleep?

Usually yes, since most dreaming occurs during the REM stage of sleep, (REM= Rapid Eye Movement), which is said to be the most restorative sleep stage. Although dreaming is said to be able to occur during any of the stages of sleep, and we cycle through them repeatedly through the time were asleep. But I usually take good dreams as a sign of good sleep.

uuuummmm.... no actually it means the opposite.... we dream during REM sleep (syramoon already explained). thats the part of our sleep cycle where our body is asleep but our mind is still kind of awake. Non-REM sleep is the deep sleep where you dont dream.....but going into a deep sleep doesnt neccessarily mean a good nights sleep....sometimes i dont go into Non-REM and im fully charged and other times i go into a deep sleep and feel like crap in the morning........

To me it seems that if I get waken up during the NREM state of sleep I feel like horrible and sluggish all day. I think it's many factors that weigh into whether or not a night of sleep can count as good. I like to try to count the different number of dreams I've had, since we have man through the sleep cycle many times in a night, and usually dream every time we go through the REM part, through that I've tried to calculate approximately how many times I most likely went into deep sleep. To me deep sleep does equal a good night of rejuvenating sleep.

Good answer there. I should read more about that REM stage of sleep and that is the the most restorative sleep stage. thanks.

Seeing that dreams tend to be more stable in deep sleep, then yes, you did have a good night's sleep.

hi everygirl72 yes I do think that dreams show I have had a good
sleep as long as they are not upsetting dreams. I believe we
are really supposed to dream as that shows we are into rem stage then going into deep sleep. I know i feel rested when I have
dreamed and thats good enough for me whether its scientific or
not as long as I get up refreshed I am all for dreams.

Any dreams as long as not upsetting dreams is good. No dreams at night, somehow I have some shallow sleep. thanks

Since you dream in the deeper stages of sleep, known as REM sleep... having dreams can mean that you slept well or at least deeply. I usually don't feel rested unless I've dreamed! It's not so much how I feel but that sense of lost time from reality in the dream world that makes me feel like I've really slept. However, something else that happens in the really deep stages of REM sleep is that we often have more vivid dreams that can tend to be nightmares. So too much deep REM sleep can be bad for you.

I agree, too deep REM sleep can also be bad if happening frequently. Thanks. For me I love having good dreams not nightmares at night.

For me, I have proven it true...just last time, I rarely have dreams because I cannot sleep well but the next days...I feel I have better sleep I always have a dream and after those dreams I get awakened and felt that my sleep for the night is complete though it is still too early to wake up.

In my personal point of view, I believe that a "dream" is just simply an expression of our sub-conscious mind. What we have felt and what we want to express that we are not able to express it while we are awake, it will be shown or will be expressed through our dreams. Just simply that. So, for me if we dreamed it doesn't really mean we are having a good sleep because sometimes I experienced that I was dreaming even just a couple of minutes that I was asleep....:)) thanks

Yes I do agree. I love dreaming in my sleep because the feeling is different when I woke up. Thanks.
