The things man can do to survive, if his life is in danger!

I watched the movie 127 hours earlier today. It is based on a true survival story. The protagonist gets stuck in a remote place and he does a lot of things like drinking his own urine(!) in order to survive. He even [SPOILER ALERT] amputates his own arm so as to free himself. I did a little research around the web after the movie and found out that the character this story is based on, had really done all these things himself. I also heard about different similar occasions, like people being lost in deserts without water, and what they do to survive. I am not sure I would be able to do things like that. I mean if I was to drink my urine I would probably vomit and get even more dehydrated:P, and if I had to amputate a part of my body, chances are that I would faint because of the pain and the extreme sight. Unless the human body itself, injects itself some kind of substances like andrenaline, and that keeps you going. I really hope something like that happens in those cases. Anyway, I don't plan in going rockclimbing alone, or hiking across a desert, so i'll probably never learn my ultimate survival limits .:P

I think people are very weak in the nature, for we do not have weapons on our body to fight against other animals. But now we can the rule animal of the world. the main reason for that is we can make and use tool and things around us. If in a dangerous situation, people will try to find something to make tools for themselves and use it to find meals and water. If nothing can be found in that situation, making full use of things on our body is necessary.

Definetely the only weapon man has is his brain. With it he uses tools, traps etc in order to survive, and of course he can communicate thoroughly through the languages he created. Still, even a helpless man, trapped in the wilderness, can go all the way to the extreme and surprise even himself when it comes to surviving.

I also don't think i can do what he did though- i am not even good at any sports and ind of weak.. so let's just avid those outdoor activities so we won't get hurt.

If you decide to watch the movie make sure to check out the real event after. There is a documentary, I think you can find some clips even on youtube, that show the video's that this guy was filming when he thought he would die. It's so hard, looking at the face of a man who is expecting to die from moment to moment.

I also watched 127 Hours. That movie was based in the Australian outback.. I think it is hard to say excatly what I would do until I was actually faced with the situation.. Could you imagine being stuck in the same spot for that long unable to free yourself. No doubt I would try. Your arm would already be numb from loss of blood and circulation. I wouldn't want to but I think if I was faced with it I would give it ago... I would go crazy if I was stuck. I dont think I would even last 24hours... Lesson learned from that film is to Never go out on Adventures on your own and it would be wise to have a satelite phone when travelling in remote areas... Be Prepared!

Indeed, nowadays a satelite phone can be a life saver, if you are into this kind of adventuring. You are also right about the arm's numbness. It probably won't feel the pain, since the blood has stopped flowing in there, and after such a difficulty, it might also never be able to function again, since being without blood for so long time, it might have as a result a permenent damage on the limb.

I also watched this movie. I can also feel the pain of tearing one part of your body just to survive and get out of stucked in danger. The character is just strong enough to endure the pain rather than dying stucked in the remote area. If I am in this kind of situation, I cannot tell right now what I can do in order to survive. It is really hard to think of what you are going to do when you are already in this situation.

I guess the human will is the greatest source of strength that someone can receive. When you are thinking of the world you are leaving behind, the friends and family, people you love and the ones that love you, you are probably willing to make the greatest sacrifices in order to see them again one more time! Even with this, however, i am sure some people prove to be stronger than others.
