This may sound gross, but I feel really sorry for my daughter who unfortunately got infected with lice. Apparently, her cousins borrowed her brush, when they were spending a few nights here at home, and I think that’s how she got these parasites. Good thing her hair isn’t that thick.
What easy solutions can you suggest to help me clean up her head faster than bare hands and fast eyes?

Lice and their eggs (nits) are fairly difficult to deal with effectively. At one time (in England, anyway) they were endemic and nearly everyone had them, then, in the 19th Century, better standards of hygiene meant that they were much more actively sought for and dealt with, often by shaving heads (which is why prisoners used to have their heads shaved or cropped very short).
This resulted in lice getting a slightly undeserved bad name because having them indicated that you came from a dirty home or had dirty hair. Actually, this is not true at all. Lice actively prefer hair which is clean. They jump from one head to another very easily when heads are close ... something which happens with children at school a lot, of course.
There are several ways of eradicating them successfully. Probably the most effective way is with a medicated shampoo or cream designed for the purpose and coupled with a fine-tooth comb. The stuff is not pleasant to use and doesn't smell very nice but it usually needs only one thorough application. My children never liked the combing much, either, even though their hair was straight!
Recently I have seen electric combs which claim to be able to kill lice and deal with the nits by electrocuting them. These don't hurt the child, of course. It is only the lice and nits which come between the bars of the comb which get a shock! I don't know how effective these are - I guess it depends how thorough one is - but they would certainly save some time and the use of chemicals which are not pleasant and must be kept away from eyes, &c.

Wow, that's a lot of information, owlwings.
I would try out a shampoo for lice.
I also heard from a friend, that he would use petroleum jelly and wrap his hair, so the lice and its nits get suffocated and die.

I seem to remember my mother telling me that in her day they used paraffin (kerosene) or something similar and then soap (in those days there was no such thing as shampoo). Petroleum jelly would be kinder to the scalp, I think, but would be dreadful to wash out!
I believe that in some cultures, hair is regularly oiled or dressed with oil (coconut oil and other such oils are definitely on sale amongst the hair products in out local post office which has a lot of Indian products and a number of Indian customers. Perhaps this tradition is not only intended to make the hair look glossy (as I had thought) but also to deter and kill head lice.

Yeah, petroleum jelly would be more gentle to the scalp, yet we'd need a stronger soap or shampoo to wash it off. It sure would be very sticky.

my youngest daughter had pretty thick hair and caught lice a couple of times and then two summers ago, she caught it from her best friend, after that, we cut her hair into layers (plus now she is 15). the best friend's parents felt so bad that their daughter gave our daughter lice that they bought the treatment for us! the think i hated about lice was all the laundry it causes!

Hi Jureathome,
You need a special shampoo for this and follow the directions carefully. Make sure that you comb out all the nits. You may have to do the procedure more than once. Also, notify anyone whom your child has come into contact with including the school or they just keep recurring.
make sure you wash all linens and pillows and get rid of any hairbrush she may have used.

Oh lice, it is for sure itchy... You can also try this, shampoo her hair with plenty amount to make sure it will make huge bubble and scrub her head lightly with white towelette. After doing it, you'll see lice stuck on the white cloth.

Oh it is pretty common with kids especially with kids who has playmates with lice which we parents would not know right? as if we inspect them one by one lol but my daughter was also infected by lice too. what i did was search those lice one by one lol i get sooo irritated and i also used a shampoo which is specifically for killing those pests. You could ask any pharmacies they have it, i just forgot the name, the bottle is white and it comes in sachets as well..
i also saw once on tv that you can also kill them if you soak your daughter's hair with conditioner for like 10 minutes.. i have not tried it though..

I think it is better to make the use of shampos to stay away from them. Now there many shampoos in our market which gives us the garuntee to get rid of them. So i think you can make use of them.
