There are a number of different things that could possibly cause nightmares, but we actually don't know a whole lot about dreams in general for certain. I can tell you just a few solid facts about nightmares, and that is that there's associated with the deepest stages of REM sleep which is where dreams are the most vivid (maybe why you remember them better than good dreams?) and that "night owls" tend to have more nightmares than people who go to bed early.
I can tell you a few tips and tricks that might help you ward off nightmares, but nothing is foolproof. Get plenty of rest, go to bed early and get up at a consistent time in the morning, exercise during the day, and most importantly cut the nightmare fuel. No horror movies, books, etc.

Nightmares happen for different reasons, but a lot can depend what is going on emotionally in our lives, what we eat, and side effects to medications. There is no magic cure to stop them, but I have noticed that if I am really tired I am less likely to have really bad dreams. So exercise a lot during the day, try to stay away from sugar and caffeine as well.

There is a good chance that your medication is causing your vivid dreams. Check out the side effects on the prescription, and talk to your doctor about it. May be able to get another one that does the same thing without this possible side effect!

hello musicluv4life, if you consistently experience nightmare with the same thought as before, there might be a message that you need to know so try to figure it out.. if it bothers you or made you to be scared, try to visit a psychologist for help.. i would like to appreciate rewardsinlife's comment too.. lastly, always remember that everyone of us could dream and even have nightmares.. :))

I don't know about reasons. I don't believe in dream psychology, so I wouldn't start analyzing things. For me, it's really interesting. Most of the dreams everyone consider nightmares I'm not scared about, I see them as really cool and fast-paced and exciting films. But there was one occasion when I got up tearing. It wasn't even because the actual stuff happening in a dream, but wakinh up realizing that unconsciously, in my dream, a really nice friend of mine was the evil one... and I just couldn't cope with me unconsciously seeing someone who's the nicest person in the world evil in my dream.

First, for my opinion, you're having a nightmare because you're stressed, i mean you think to much, but elders say that it is a hint for what will happen for tomorrow or in the next days. Secondly, you always remember your bad dreams more than the good one because you're scared of it, like you're scared if that will happen to you or to the person in your dream. Another reason is, because you curious about it, like if there's some meaning hidden on it or something more, and you want to explore it. But actually if you asked the elders they will told you about they do, or maybe they know about the meanings of your dreams, but don't believe it too much, its just that it's fun to know the meaning of your dreams.
