Swatch Watches: Collectibles, Fashion Items, or Tools?

Recently, I got my 1992 Swatch watch a new plastic strap, because the old strap was crumbling. When I went to the Swatch store, I've realized how their style's changed. I saw a few luxury style watches in the corner, but out in the spotlight were swatches with flashy colors. Right now, they look more like fashion items than the ones I knew in the past. But now, people are collecting Swatch watches from the past. Heck, mine could probably sell for $50-$100, because I think that mine's a variant.
What do you think about Swatch watches? Are they just watches or vanity?

I remember the Swatch Watch craze. I thought it was a fad. I had no idea that Swatch Watches were still in existence.
I remember admiring them back in the day, however, I never really wanted one, even though I collect watches. There is something fetching about them, but I think I feared that they weren't reliable. Guess that shows how much I know.
