Dogs and cats are quite different. Dogs enjoy having the bath whereas the cats hate it. But you know cats are elegant animals and they shall like to be clean. Why they hate to have the bath so much?

I think both of them hate it, but the cat hates it more. Maybe they just like to lick themselves clean instead of taking a bath. They find water cold too- they have thin fur, so they will freeze a bit if we bathe them.. They even shake sometimes.

Oh, I see maybe your dog have been used to it. But I guess if they were to choose they don't like being bath most of the time. I think too that most dog owners specially the pricey ones want their pet to be given a bath if possible everyday especially if their owner's cuddles them. Because they don't want to be with smelling dogs.

I think they are not but since It is also on the owner of the cat. Some cats are used to take their bath if since they were a kitten the owner teach them too. Like dogs we used to teach a dog to be not afraid of water and because dogs are not like cats that they can clean their self we do our cleaning for them to take their bath. I have a cat when i was young I can take her to bath because since she was a kitten I let her take a bath. So every time I took her for bath she like it so much. My grandma shout at me you took the cat to bath it will rain . That's her superstition belief.

I think it totally depends on how they are brought up by their owners when they were kittens. Tolerance for water varies from one cat to another. There are cats who like water and who don't. Cats who like water will often sit near the bath tub while you splash them. Others will jump into the sink or tub and actually seem happy. I think we should let our pets be the judge.

Hi,youless~ I have no idea. Guess they are just too elegant to allow us to hold them and try to give them a bath. I have never tried to give my bf's Blacky a bath. Don't think she would fancy the idea anyway. She likes to lick her hair though,a lot. Guess that's just what cats do. They allow you to serve them, but they don't like to be too close to you either. Have a nice weekend~

This makes sense. Perhaps the cats are afraid that we will make their hair in a mess. They should keep their style all the time

Dog is not afraid of the water and perhaps this is why they can swim.

Well because they like to be elegant and clean! Mine fell in the tub trying to play with the bath suds when she was about 7 months old! You've never seen a cat move so fast. She looked so wet and stupid hiding under the bed after this experience!

I have seen dogs swimming in the river, but have never seen a cat in water. If a cat falls into water, it will probably die, I guess. So cats may be afraid of water that it does not like to have a bath?

I had wondered the same question until I read Bad Kitty Gets a Bath. It's a book for kids, but without a doubt answers those questions about our feline friends. Cats in general do not like baths because of a few reasons. One: They are not in control. A cat loves to be in constant control of itself and being forced to do something is against their nature. Two: Unlike dogs, cats' body temperatures take hours to warm them back up after a bath. This is why if you're going to give your cat a bath, it's best to do it with very warm water and inside a house that is well heated. Three: If the cat has never been introduced to water from an early age, it will not adapt well to bathing. Also, not all dogs love baths. One of my dogs runs and growls at the mention of her getting a bath. The others also try to avoid me when they know it's bath time.

It sounds like your explanation are fair reasonable.

it's because that the house cat usually is afraid of water. House cats evolved from African wildcats or Asiatic desert wildcats, both of which live in an environment where the water is not sufficient. And house cats have an ability of self-cleaning, while frequent bathing will make their skin dry.

This is a good explanation.

Hi youless, Its because cats lick themselves to clean themselves. This means they don't need water normally. They also have oils for their fur to stay glossy and healthy and scent glands to mark their territory. If you wash them in water they lose their oils. And they get cold. Cats can't shake like a dog to get rid of the water. My cat got covered in mud and I had to wash her in the kitchen sink. Then I used a towel to dry her. She hated it. And then she spent 2 hours licking herself completly dry!

In this aspects dogs seem not to clean themselves very well.
