How blue is the water?

I don't know if anyone here has ever been to the Bahamas or not, but I've got to tell you that I've never seen such clear light blue water in my life. You could look down into the water and see all the fish swimming around. When I went to the Bahamas, it was one of those vacation cruises for a few days. Definitely a nice trip to be remembered.

That must be nice! I went ot Maui and snorkeled and also couldn't believe that I was looking straight down at coral and fish just from the boat! You look down in the water here and all you see is darkness.

I went there a long time ago, around 1988. Close to shore we were told to stay out of the water because of an oil spill. Farther out by boat we were able to go snorkeling and stuff in deep water which was fairly blue. I wore glasses because near sightedness back then and couldn't wear then snorkeling so I could see all the very small almost transparent octopus that my girl friend was talking about. When we got back to where we were staying I did get to see one because one had gotten into the top of her swimsuit and she hadn't even noticed till be were back in our room.

Is it really the water that is blue? Or is the water clear and it is the reflection of the blue sky making it look blue? And it makes you wonder why water appears to be sooo blue in some places and not in others. I've never been to the Bahamas but found the water in Bermuda to be very blue as well, while other places, as mentioned in the reply above, seem to be dark.
