Ok All You Crafers...where are the macrame plant hangers?

Yesterday I went looking for a Macrame Plant Hanger. Do you think I could find one? I used to make my own years ago (like 30?) but it's been so long since I've done one that I've forgotten how. Anyway, I figured it would be easier to buy one. I did not anticipate the frustration in not being able to find one. It seems that Macrame is indeed a lost art. Not only could I not find any ready made ones, the craft stores around here didn't even have the materials or patterns to make one. I must admit I was quite surprised by this. I guess nobody is into it anymore, although they are quite pretty and functional. Or maybe people just don't hand plants anymore? I don't know. Maybe I can hunt up an old pattern someplace and get some cord online.

In my country it has happened something similar. I used to make them myself but last year I discovered that some of the old ones should be changed for new ones. I culd not find the kind of twine I used. I will have to check more throughly.

I checked the name in English for the kind of twine I used in the 70s. It seems it´s a twine from the marihuana plant. Maybe that´s why they are not selling it anymore and they only sell these ugly plastic "jute".

Weren't they just the coolest thing? My mom had a ton of them hanging with plants of every type in them....she even had one that had room for three plants and it hung from the ceiling to the floor....but like you said...I haven't seen one in years...

Yes! I loved them...still do! I've seen some two and three-tiered ones as well. My favourites were the ones with the piece of round glass on the bottom to sit your plant on. Maybe I'll have to find an old book or you tube instructional video and make my own. Do people not hang plants anymore or have they just found other ways to do it?

I used to make my own patterns as the knots are so simple. But I haven´t found the right kind of twine lately. Everything I see is plastic

It has been several years since I have seen one as well. I know we recently went to Walmart and purchased some outside hanging baskets and I don't recall seeing any of the Macrame plant hangers on the shelves. That is so sad. I hope you can find a pattern. If you are crafty that might be a good way to make some extra $.. make them and sell them. Good luck!

Yes, Walmart was one of the stores that I checked. Also checked the dollar stores, craft stores (Michael's), Home Sense, everyplace that we could thing of. When we got home I even tried Mary Maxim, my favourite and largest craft store that I know of. They also have online shopping and I didn't even see any on there! I did see some on amazon though. Maybe an option for me.

So many old fashioned artifacts have disappeared into oblivion. These macrame plant hangers may soon come under the category of antiques!
I located one online source that could help you - http://www.macramenia.com/macrame-plant-hangers.html

Talking about crafts I too like to be surrounded by atleast a few such items. I picked up an item that someone was selling on the road side here. He seemed a poor guy but with art in him. Here is the image. This wickerwork is made from strips of bamboo. I can imagine the time he must have taken to prepare this. These artists are never recognised unfortunately.

Yes, thats an art that has collected dust and missed the recycling bin. What ever happened to the art classes that taught kids how to do this? I too, have not seen one since I threw the worn out one I had away several years ago. You know, I bet this fad would take off again. Todays youth would be really surprized and would wonder what it was, lol.

True that today's youth would probably not know right away what it was. I just think a macrame hanger is a much nicer way to hang a plant than some of the ugly plastic hangers that you see now. And some plants, like spider plants, definitely look nicer when hanging.

Believe it or not, I saw them in Home Depot. I don't know if they all stock them, but I saw them in a Northern California store. They were located in the indoor plant section, near the indoor decorative pots; not outside with the big pots & outdoor landscaping stuff. I also saw them at an Ace Hardware. I haven't checked Lowe's or Orchard. I'm sure you can find them and order them online if you don't have any luck with brick and mortar stores.
