Do you believe that a goodnight sleep can help lose weight?

I don't know if everyone will be happy to know that if we sleep enough hours, recommended is 7 to 9 hours, we'd have a better chance at losing weight or keeping fit.
On an article I read online, there are 2 hormones involved in this phenomenon. One is called leptin, which suppresses appetite, and the other is called Grehlin, which is the other way around - it increases food intake. If you are deprived of sleep, you get lower level of leptin, and grehlin production is increased. This is thought to be the reason why obese people suffering with sleep apnea often put on weight faster than others.
I used to work in a call center, and on a graveyard shift, for more than 7 years. I've put on a lot of weight since I started. I think sleep deprivation played a big part of it. I'm glad I'm a stay at home mom, now.

I don´t think that a good sleep will help you lose weight, but it will help you have a good health. But I read one of you comments and you said that you took snacks to your bedside table to eat if you woke up. That makes you put on weight. Why don´t you take a full glass of water with a few drops of lemon juice (no sugar) to drink if you wake up? It´s far better.

I haven't tried that lemon juice therapy. I will try it one of these days, if I wake up again, in the middle of the night.
I get myself milk, but even that has fats and could lead to weight gain, right?

Milk not only has fats, but it also has sugars (lactose). Bacteria love that and you are not going to get up from bed to wash your teeth again. That should be taken into account too.

Bacteria? Oh no, I didn't really consider that. Milk makes a good alternative for a snack. So, when im really hungry and i cant find anything to munch on, I would make myself a glass of milk. Sometimes, I'd mix oatmeal and a little milk.

I am overweight and I sleep on average between 7-9 hours every night. So no I don't think it helps you loose weight or keep you thinner or healthier in particular. However if you don't get the sleep your body needs then it will affect your health and even your mental health. We all know that we get crabby and find it hard to work when we are tired. I do find that everyone needs a different amount of sleep. Some people can be healthy on only 4 hours and some people need more than 9 hours to be healthy. The most important thing with weight matters is what you eat and the exercise you do.

Just keep on having enough sleep, because with the current condition you have, you'd need to do all the good stuff. Your having enough sleep may not have a direct impact on losing weight, but perhaps, it could help prevent you from gaining more weight. And, also, when you're overweight, you got to do more than just sleeping enough hours. Are you exercising daily?

It doesn't "make" you lose weight, it helps in losing weight. Its explained briefly above.

Well it definitely should help losing weight, as we spend less time awake and eating... I remember when I was up till late hours studying, I ate more snacks, I was hungry all the time. Not to mention I was overweight no matter how I watched my weight, sometimes I even starved myself, but couldn't lose weight. So I guess it makes sense that getting enough sleep helps.

Right. Having enough sleep surely has a lot of benefits. I don't know if it has any disadvantage - perhaps, coming in late for work?

I have read about that, too and it makes sense to me. I know that when I'm tired (as in not getting enough sleep) I want to snack a lot. I don't know whether I'm looking for an energy boost, or whether it's too much grehlin in my system.
I know that when I sleep well, my whole life goes better and that includes appetite not getting away from me.

I am not sure whether a good-night sleep can help lose weight. i do think that a goodnight sleep can improve one's work efficiency. if i don't have a good sleep at night i feel rather bored and easily get angry. So i make it a rule to go to sleep at the usual time ,trying my best not sleep late.

Yes I have heard this more than once, and I beleive it has some sense to it. I think by depriving your body of sleep it somehow determines the weight we gain. That is why I'm always complaining about not getting enough sleep, LOL. I want just one day to be able to go to sleep and get up when I want to, it's all I ask. It seems so impossible though.

During my school years, i used to pull all-nighter to study and such. And yes, there will be cups of coffee and biscuits as my companions. My weight is around 85 kg at that time. But now i have regular sleep time, less coffee consumptions, and manage to maintain my weight at 70kg. Still obese, but better than before. So i do believe good night sleep helps.
