How do you cook your hotdog?

I know that majority of us here fry hotdogs. I used to do this too until recently. One time I noticed a hotdog vendor boil the hotdogs first before frying them. I asked him why he had to boil them and he reasoned that hotdogs will fry faster after they'd been precooked in boiling water. So I thought, that's too many steps to do, right? And oil is bad to the body. So I experimented doing the first step only, and that is by cooking the hotdogs in hot boiling water. I noticed that the water turned red which, to me is good because it means much of the artificial color has been drained out. After that, I gave it to the kid in the house to see if she will notice the difference. She didn't. So now, I am boiling hotdogs instead of frying them. How about you?

You know what? I've actually never heard that they fry hot dogs instead of boiling them; I remember that my parents used to boil sausages they bought from the nearby charcuterie (that's french for meat store; I lived in Europe for part of my life), and they tasted quite fine - crunchy and with taste retained. I don't see why people would want to fry instead of boil, because they're already OK when they're boiled.

hi musicluv4life! yup, if i had my way, i'd have grilled hotdogs more often. of course, the hotdogs shouldn't be burned because the burnt part is carcinogenic. anyway, if you don't like dry grilled hotdogs, you can use barbecue sauce. mix one part soy sauce and catsup, plus some lime/lemon and sugar to taste. you can add pepper or some chili sauce if you want spicy barbecued hotdogs. put all the ingredients in the bowl and mix thoroughly. apply the sauce to the hotdogs while grilling or for a better flavor, marinade the hotdogs for an hour or two, or even overnight before grilling these. hope this helps. cheers!!!

Mom always boiled hotdogs, but I never knew why. I did it that way, too, until I got married and my husband thought I should heat them dry. I did it that way for years, but now I'm back to boiling them or just heating up one or two in the microwave.

Hi Peavey. Heating them in microwave will just let the coloring stay. I'd rather boil and remove the red thingy in hotdogs. But actually, it still stays red even after draining much of the color. That is why the kid did not notice.

That's true, but there's a lot more in hotdogs to bother me than the artificial color. Most meat you buy from the store is artificially colored anyway.

In the UK, I saw my first hotdog vendor in the late sixties. He gave us a free sample. That was the only time I have ever eaten one from the street. It consisted of this soggy, tasteless, pink thing which came out of warm water. With dehydrated onions which were also in warm, not hot, water. Nothing was what I would call cooked. At least in Europe, we have some decent sausages to choose from, so we don't need hotdogs!

I haven't seen a hotdog in many, many years! I'm not in the UK any more though. Certainly Europe and a lot of Asia are hotdog free!

I usually fry them but have boiled them as well. In fact, I like the taste of them better if they are boiled. Sometimes I use the microwave as well. I put wiener in the hotdog bun, wrap it in a paper towel to absorb excess moisture to prevent the bun from getting soggy. They're pretty good that way as well.

I rarely fry them actually, I boil them, and maybe, use the microwave oven to cook them. I don´t know why I do it this way, maybe it the way my mother used to make them, sometimes, she did this when I was going to the school, she worked at that time, and sometimes there was not time for anything else.

I cook veggie dogs, not hot dogs, since I quit meat years ago. I usually fry them in butter, because that gives them the best flavor--and my boyfriend agrees. Sometimes, I will fry them in olive oil, but I find that butter is superior for this particular food. Personally, I find boiled veggie dogs to be kind of bland. The same was true of boiled hot dogs when I had them back in my meat-eating days. Regardless of how you're preparing them, meat-based hot dogs are unhealthy. The bit of oil that one fries them up in isn't going to be the tipping point that sends them over into being "junk food," because they already are there.

My stepfather has to have his hotdogs fried because he likes the skin to be crispy. I have always boiled my hot dogs. I have tried microwaving them but they just seem to shrivel up or seem too raw.

Oh is that so? I haven't tried boiling the hotdog. I think i will try that too. Usually, i have my hotdog, cooked in the oven toaster. I would put some little amount of Canola oil first, wiped all over the tray. Then put some slits on the hotdog and have them cooked on one side for 4 minutes and the other half for another 4 minutes. The moment i saw the slits i made burst open, i know that my hotdog is already cooked.

Yeah, give it a try my friend. Just don't overcook it or it will be wrinkly.

of course i cook my hotdog in usual cook of that, and that is frying but grilling of hotdog for me is the most tasty and more delicious way of cooking because you can add ketchup so that the taste of that hotdog will add more aroma and taste.

Me too, I also boil hotdogs instead of frying it. But before i used to fry them. And when i went to the grocery and saw a small vending booth for hotdogs, i saw them boiling it instead and fried it for a few minutes after boiling. So starting that time, i just boil hotdogs :D

Hello there, the new way you cook hotdog is quite healthy and easy. If your kid like it, you can continue to do so. For me, I just stir fried it slowly till it cooked. With the tomato sauce, I give it to my daughter, who likes very much. Yummy!

Back then I also fry hotdogs head on, but recent packaging of my son's favorite hotdog brand suggest cooking it in little water first. So I did, I cooked our hotdogs in water first, when it was about to dry up, I added just a spoonful of cooking oil and the result was just as great.

Favorite breakfast plate - Hotdog with egg and pandesal is a comman breakfast favorite of many people. Take out the hotdogs please because this is simply cancerous.
Well dear, whatever and however it is cooked hotdog itself is bad and should not be eaten. So sad to note that people keep eating hotdogs though. Children are the ones mostly eating these very unhealthy stuff. Many homes do have hotdogs on their table during breakfasts and even during snacks, parties and picnics and it is really very sad. Why is it that statistics show that Cancer patients keeps adding? Well this is simply because people love processed meat such as hotdogs. These hotdogs and all processed meats including bacon which is also a top favorite of most people contain sodium nitrate, a cancer causing food preservative and food coloring. Well this has been found and proven but people are either ignorant or unmindful of these fact. So they go and eat hotdog and later they get cancer.

I always fry or grill ours. I do not like the boiled hotdogs. I also really like the crispy skin on the hot dog after frying/grilling. I think this gives it more flavor. The boiling just does not taste right for me.

I mostly boil hotdogs, except at a barbecue. As you say, they are a lot healthier. But on the whole, I don´t eat so many hotdogs although I love them. Then are not healthy even when boiled. They are worse that red meat, let alone any other kind of meat.
