My boyfriend is planning to make a website for his online business. He mentioned to me godaddy.com in which he has to pay 300USD for 6 months. I have found out that having a website on your own is quite expensive. I google how to make own website and I found out that we can create website for free. There are also some sites that will help you make your own website but just for a low cost. As this is my first time dealing on this, I am not aware much on what is the best site to use if you want to have your own business website. Has anyone created already their business website? Please share some suggestions.

There are free websites available online. Like wordpress.com for example. But the difference is instead of having an address like www.yourbusiness.com it will appear like www.yourbusiness.wordpress.com.
I run a website but it's personal and not a business type. I bought that website from godaddy too. But I won the hosting from a certain contest I joined last July 20011.

The hosting is the space reserved for your website. It's like a folder on your hard disk where the name of the folder is your domain. In that folder you upload all the data for your website like the website itself, images, databases.... At least this is how I understand it. Please correct me if I'm wrong :)

That's right. To clarify:
A domain name is the site's name and nothing more. Like www.annierose.com or www.annierose.net
You can own a domain name without any hosting. In that case, the name is registered to you but there's no site associated with it - sort of like patenting an idea without building a prototype.
Once you get hosting, you have somewhere to put the site itself. It can be paid hosting, free hosting, shared hosting (which is paid hosting with shared resources), a VPS (virtual private server) or an actual dedicated server (a machine to yourself).
You then build the site on the hosting space. You point the domain name at the site (using nameservers) and bingo! When someone types the domain name into their browser, they end up on your site on your hosting space.
Hope that clarifies things.

Although, a website that provides a number of features and tools, still it is the content that counts, am I right? We should be concise, direct, and honest with it. It should contain words or sentences and statements that will invites the consumers to be interested in the products.

I have a website hosted with Global Domains International which cost me $10 a month (you get commission for selling those as well) and one with with GoDaddy which cost me about $10 a year for the domain name and $45 a year for the hosting. I created my sites myself using free HTML editors like Kompozer or NVue and I didn't have an idea on how to create a website. If you don't know how to do it just take a little extra time and learn: it's not that hard ;)
So those prices are far less than the $300 you mentioned....

I don't have much idea on how to create a website. I have a background in html but when it comes to web hosting or promoting the site, I really don't have idea. Do you know any site which will give me a step by step tutorial on it?

Setting up the hosting with GoDaddy wasn't difficult. As far as I can remember you get all the info for uploading your files to your hosting account. I use FilleZilla to upload the files. Once you set it up ist easy when you need to change something.
With GDI it's even easier as you dont have to purchase your hosting separately as it's all together in one package and then you only have to choose from a list I you want to use their hosting, their website creator, forward your domain to another page or just use the standard affiliate website.

Do you think that the price they are giving is reasonable or somewhat expensive? Do you mean that the tool in uploading the information in the website must on be your own? I thought it will also be given by godaddy. What is GDI?Is it also like godaddy?

Now I do not recommend spending such sum when you can have one for less.Yes with godaddy you can first get your domain name if you insist on dot com domain otherwise if you are ready with other options like ws you will be able to get your domain name, hosting, website, emails etc for $10 a month and you will be able to get money making opportunity too for bringing other like minded people to the business.

By reading the post here, I have learned some terms like hosting, domain and now the word affiliate income that we can also put in the website. It is cool that aside from the business online, we can also earn from those different affiliate programs. Do you find success on those affiliate programs?

Yes not only this there are even less costly ones like those from hostgator and bluehost where you can get a bundle of features for a monthly price but why I referred this one is here you are getting an affiliate income plan where in if you sign up with hostgator or blue host affiliate income is not there like this. And with godaddy its too costly to join the reseller plan.so spending some time searching option pays.good luck.

Well I don't know much about websites but I have made website to do dozen on foolishness. But one thing I have learned from it all. Cheap sites, with names attached to the main site that you got that website from don't usually do too well. People tend not to really trust those site. It also comes down to people finding it harder to remember the name of your site, because its not short and spicy (well that depends on where you got the cheap site from). But from tips that I have researched all around, if you are aiming for big money and a real business then get your own site. That is the best way

now I do websites for clients, we have some templates that my friend and I did, we show them and ask than what they want to change.
but we are not experts in this, we work in a print store, we do business carts, banners and so on, and we offer these very chip website, chip here, we ask like $100 per website and like $10 per month, here in Brazil it is chip for a website, for this reason we have 3 or 4 websites to do per week.

Yes, I have created my own website with Yahoo! hosting it. I pay monthly around 7-8 dollars (I can't quite remember the exact ammount) for the .com domain name and the webspace for my pages. I started out with free sites - there are lots of them around, and as I found more people visiting, I decided to go for a domain name, as it gets better results on the search engines. It is important to choose a name that includes what the site is all about, that way it is more easily found by searh engines. Writing the pages needs care and there is lots of information about how to write good content that will attract good search results. Good luck with your site. _Derek

$300 is insanely expensive. It sounds like he's been quoted a managed VPS or dedicated server solution which, unless he's expecting thousands of visitors a day, he won't need.
Basic shared hosting is all you need when you start - about $40 a year, plus $5 or so for the domain name. Install a CMS like WordPress or something (free) and you're sorted. Or design your own. Either way, there's no extra cost beyond the hosting and domain registration.
I have a shared hosting solution from which I'm running about 40 sites without any trouble, plus a VPS solution for my big project (that one is about $25 a month for the basic VPS for a higher-volume site).
For a business site, forget free hosting. They suck. Even if you go for a supposedly professional solution like Yola, the site layout is so limited that it's blindingly obvious to your visitors that you're a cheapskate amateur and they won't trust you the same way they trust a proper, self-hosted site.
If he's looking at a low-volume solution (i.e. something like a blog with a few hundred visitors), read this: http://www.halfhog.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=216
Personally, I'd suggest starting with a shared hosting solution and a domain name. $45-$60 isn't bad for a year and if his business site gets too many hits, he can upgrade to a VPS and move the files easily.

Hello Annierose,
Getting your own website is not that expensive. Here in India we have to pay less than USD 20 for an entire year of hosting. You should ask him to consider other options because I am sure there would be cheaper, reliable options available over there as well.

I use GoDaddy for one of my websites and I use HostGator for another. Both are good. I don't know what kind of website your boyfriend is planning but he should look into cheaper options. It's possible to have a basic site hosted at either of the places I mentioned or several others for under $100 per year including the domain registration. My advice would be to start out with the minimum and then you can always expand later if need be, when the website is gaining traffic. God luck with it anyway!

Yes, that is what we are going to do. We are going to start with the minimum and then if the outcome will be good, we will expand it. He also some asked of his friends and they suggested godaddy. It seems godaddy is very popular in the USA.

I make my mobile site in xtgem.com, but its very simple one.
Since I only know about html, so its completely a static site.
If you search more, you will got everything for free.
Whether hosting, domain, email form, etc.
Lot of people in here use weebly.com to make a simple online store.

Having an effective and catchy domain name is a must. We should think of a domain name which is easy to type and easy to be remembered by visitors or customers. Thanks. My boyfriend will be the one who will decide for a domain name and I hope by this time, he has already what the domain name will be for his online business website.

The most important is a domain name, whatever hosting you use whether free or paid hosting.
Cause this is your business address, thing that will be visit by customers.
To get more pro, try to use real domain whether .com, .net, .info, etc.Couple of free hosting allow DNS, so all you have to paid is only for domain.
When your business get explode, thats the time to find a new hosting.

good day annierose,
with reference to your main topic, i do maintain 3 websites which deals with different types. and i am proud to say that these sites are for free and i don't have to pay any cost in maintaining them. the only thing here is that, i cannot apply the name directly to the site, like for example : www.yoursitename.com. since i need to insert the sponsor name on it.
unlike if you get a hosting and domain services wherein you can directly apply your site name on it.

When you created your website, you are perhaps already knowledgeable on it. Do you think that it is okay with beginners to avail the free offers or it is much better to move to the ones in which you have to pay?

Well, i don't have much experience on making my own sites. But i do know about a thing or two in these area. I think you should follow Spike advises or even start from much lower from it. Because you won't be expecting even hundred of visitors a day at the time you launch the site, it may need a week or month to actually build up links and appear on search engines where quality visitors are expected. Start slow, and upgrade if you have to, can save you hundreds for that.

Thank you superbadx. Spike really help me too. He explained this clearly to me. I think so that we should start slow and then, if the site become popular, then that will be the time we should think of upgrading even it will require money.

I have several GoDaddy websites with different price plans, but I agree that what you were quoted is way too much. My main business web site is hosted on Hostgator and its about 600 pages and doesn't cost me as much as the quote you mentioned. I have also started a couple of free web sites on Weebly.com, but they are mostly feeder sites for backlinks to my other sites. It's easy to build them with the software they provide, and you can buy and use your own domain name there if you so choose. I have just begun building my sites there. You can see what one of my sites looks like here:
http://life-through-my-camera-lens.weebly.com/index.html
It was built to promote my other sites and my photography. It's just a beginning, but I find the interface very easy. I upgraded to premium to get more features.
Good luck with your plans.
