We found a dog!

have a pretty unbelievable story to share with you guys. Last week my mother found a dog on the side of the road, in a little carrier, with a note that said "My name Phillip, please take me home." I live in Arizona, it is summer, and someone left this poor little dog (a chihuahua) inside a crate on the side of the road. Isn't that terrible!? Of course my mom brought the dog home (who could leave it??) and this little dog has a lot of issues he needs fixed up. He has HORRIBLE duclaws that need to be removed, he needs to be neutered, and he has a skin condition on his ears. He also has bad teeth, so we've ordered him a teeth cleaning too. This dog was so scared when we brought him in our home (we have cats and 3 large dogs, + a chihuahua I'm fostering - so now 5 dogs total in the house, wow!) and he is only just starting to feel safe. He stills spends a majority of his time watching everyone from afar, but he will occasionally come up to us (tail caustiously wagging). Hopefully we can get this little guy to feel safe here. Not 100% sure if we'll be keeping him or trying to find him a home, but I'm hoping after we get him al fixed up and spend all that money on him, my dad will see that keeping him makes sense! lol

Phillip was a lucky guy your mother found him. It is so nice you decided to keep him until he finds a new home. Or maybe he already found it at your place! Is he old that you said he has bad teeth? What did the veterinarian said about his skin condition on his ears? Is it contagious?

Lol he may have found his new home with us, only time will tell. We thought he was old when we found him because he kind of looks old, and he has bad teeth. But the vet thinks he is only 3 or 4 years old. So he's still a young dog. No, the ear condition is not contagious, and we got ointment for them. Oh, and he was heartworm negative, which was surprising to us, but good news!

Yes, there is good news, indeed! I asked about his ear condition because a friend of mine found a Dachshund puppy that was abandoned and she had something with her ears. The vet said it was something very contagious and he advised her to keep the little one away from the healthy dogs. I wish your dog will have a happy life, as he is quite young. This might be a good chance for him to find a home, don't you think?

AZ and left on the side of the road. They must have figured a lot of people would either be walking or going by. At least they wrote a note saying he was abandoned. We have cats and dogs walking around neighborhoods and until they start looking really, really bad, we don't know if they belong to someone or not. They also told you a name so you know what to call him. Sounds like with all the health issues, the person couldn't afford the dog any more. This economy is causing more and moer abandoned animals becaise of that.

Yeah I think it has something to do with the economy too. But I still don't think money issues is an excuse to leave an animal like that. I wonder if they even tried to contact any rescues. And there are a lot of low cost vets/spay neuter clinics around here. We even recently had a HUGE free spay/neuter event that TONS of people showed up for. I just think there's more things they could have done for this guy.

Awwwwww, this should be a story that you see on tv. Poor, poor little Phillip, I can well imagine how scared he was being left there all alone. Your mom was meant to find him and I hope your dad wants to keep him. He sounds just plain adorable, and certainly can't take up much room, lol! I know Karma will come around and bite that person who left him right in the _SS. They always get whats coming to them one way or the other, I just wish I could be there when it happens. I really hope all goes well for you and little Phillip.

Thank you Kash He doesn't take up much room at all (either dog my foster chihuahua) lol. They eat so little (Phillip barely eats anything right now because he's scared). We've never had small dogs before, but it def. seems like they would be a lot cheaper to own! lol. But I still love big dogs! If I'm able to rent a house once I graudate college and start working, I'll probably adopt a large, older dog. I'm a sucker for the less wanted animals.

HaHa, I would imagine having teeny dogs IS a lot cheaper, lol! I love big dogs too so I understand where you're coming from. But, I guess you can say I love little one's too and I've seen some really sweet cuties on tv. If I had my own home I would have a dog and a cat for sure, but in the apartments, only cats are allowed. Did you ever see the movie "Seems Like Old Times" with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase? I loved it and she had about a dozen dogs from the teeniest to the big ol' St. Bernard. Really cute movie and pretty soon your mom and dad will have the same, lol!

I am so happy you did that for that poor dog. I would have done the same thing given the condition the dog was in. Its owners probably tried to give him away and no one accepted it. So rather than leaving it on the streets, they had thought of that with high hopes that someone will take him home and you did. Congratulations.

Dear Thank you for picking up that dog!its these little life changing situations that we will remember most.I am so glad you took him in and cared for him.Its amazing that you have 5 dogs in hour home!I know I couldn't!I wonder who left it there and how many people passed by and never cared or had feelings about it! You know there was a little girl in China who got hit by a van but by the time a person called for help it was already too late and the girl had passed on.They said that more than 14 people passed by. Well contests on your new puppy wheihrr you are keeping him or not and happy mylotting!

I tend to agree with your father about keeping him, but on my part it would be more the attachment I would grow while nursing him back to a healthy state. I hate when people do stuff like that to animals. I know most likely the person couldn't afford to take care of him properly, and maybe they thought they were doing what was best for him. Poor little guy. I wish you and Philip both lots of luck on his road to recovery. :)

My mom is def. getting very attached to Phillip. And if my dad says she can keep it then there is no doubt she'll jump at that chance. I don't undertand how people can do this to a helpless animal. They need us to survive, they trust us and count on us...and "we" do something like this? Poor Phillip probably felt so betrayed! Hopefully he can learn to trust us. Thank you syramoon

Such an experience really traumatises a dog and they will never forget it. You will need a lot of patience to bring him round to being part of the family. It will happen in time but it can be a tough road for all of you. Good luck.

Poor little guy, he must be so scared, I so hope he wasn't abused in a way that hurt him although it sounds like he was neglected big time and that's bad enough. A few years ago I rescued a little dog and he was very timid. He eventually came to trust me and then my daughter came to stay with her family and he eventually stopped being scared and went home with them. He is very well looked after but he has issues about being left alone all day while the girls go to school and the adults go to work. I have another little dog who I rescued and she was extremely timid. She would not let me get near her. Eventually, I found her in an exhausted sleep during a rainy period. She was wet, cold and trembling. She hadn't been eating. I took her home and decided to bath her straight away and she was so good for me (and so full of fleas). She's still timid but not nearly as bad. She's a lovely little girl and I love her dearly. I've since rescued yet another one but he is another story.

Wow good for you! You have 3 personal rescues under your belt! You found the little dog sleeping out in the rain!? How sad!! I'm glad you were able to catch her then. Phillip is at teh vet today, he's getting his neuter, duclaws removed and teeth cleaned. He should be ready in a few hours, then I'm gonna go pick him up. Hopefully he feels okay!

Your mother did very well to find and help Phillip the little dog put in a crate. Summer in Arizona is hot so it was criminal to leave the little dog by the side of a road in the crate. Luckily you got the note saying his name and that you should bring him home. It sounds like he has some health issues which you are treating. He is starting to feel safe and at home with you. He had to get used to your other animals that you have. Good luck to Phillip the dog. I know you will either keep him or find him a loving and caring home. When my mom was younger she found a boxer dog dumped and she took her home. Months later a lady came round saying she bred that dog but sold her to a couple that had got fed up with her and dumped her. The lady couldn't have her back and my mom's family kept her. She was called Gill. She was a beautiful dog and my mom has many happy memories of her.

I wouldn't have given that woman her dog back either. Whether or not her story was true, I don't like when people breed their dogs for profit. So either way that lady did something wrong, that led to that pup getting dumped. I'm glad your mom kept the dog. *Boxers are such great dogs!*

my little puppy - This is a 3days old puppy
That is the saddest thing to do with a dog. I love chihuahua as they resemble the dogs commonly found in my country, the azkals. They are petite just the same but a little bit bigger than chihuahua. your newly found dog is naturally scared as he/she is new to your home. If I am in your shoes, I also hope the owner will not come back for him/her after all you give love to the dog

What a cute puppy!!!!! There is no way we would even onsider giving the dog back if the owners were looking for him again. Once you do that to an animal, in my opinion, you can't be trusted with another one. To me, animals are members of the family, so dumping them like trash is never okay!

Oh I know that all too well about my dogs. When I cry (I cry a lot when I watch sad animal movies lol) they often come over and lay next to me (whether they're on the floor or they jump up on the couch with me). And they put up with me laying my head on them and crying, so good! I think they def. understand our emotions and feelings, and when we need them to be there for us. I don't think my foster dog, Tinerbell, has seen me cry yet....maybe I need to watch Marley and Me or Old Yellar with her one night! lol

I garee with you completely there! animals really are like members of the family. I remember one situation where one of my dogs became the best friend of child when he was sick. Every morning the dog goes to door of his room and bark for my child to wake up. They spend a great time playing together until my child came to realize animals are good company in times of stress and depression

He is a very nice dog when it comes to smaller animals. My mom was a little worried about these two meeting because Phillip hasn't been neutered yet (we made him an appointment for thr 17th) and she thought Sam might react to that. But as you can see, that hasn't been an issue! I was never worried about it because I couldn't see Sam being aghressive toward a small dog or cat.

Sam and Phillip - Sam, our lab, with a recent rescue from the streets.
Actually today the little guy got up on our couch by himself and laid next to our big lab mix. This is a big break through for 2 reasons: 1) He used to be scared to be on the furniture and 2)He used to be afraid of our big dogs. I got a couple really cute pictures of them laying on the couch together. I'll attach one to this post so you can see them

Hi, Lily, this poor creature has been lucky that you have found him! I don't understand why some people take pets and after a while they decide to take rid of them. Yes, this takes a lot of cares and money but isn't this clear? I don't have pets because I'm afraid to take this responsibility. Shame on those people who take an innocent animal in their home and then throw him out. Years ago we found in the yard of our house a beautiful Siamese cat. My daughter was almost a baby and she was so happy. She was playing with the cat as if she was a doll and the animal was languid. Later we discovered that she was very ill. A woman living next door had a many cats in her house and we decided that she had left the cat in our garden just to take rid of her.

Happy to know that you protect one of the dog which is thrown by others. Now only some of the people only do such activities. I consider this as a noble one and I feel great on you. I think you can feed him and keep the pet with you. I think you will have a wonderful time with him. May god helps you to recover all his health problems.

I think that you just found a dog is wonderful, especially with all the other animal friends he can make in your home. He is probably very wary of people; and all the other fury friends can help him to be safe. I really appreciate the kindness you showed in taking him in. He is very lucky. Who better could of found him. You are able to assess his condition; and you seem quite experienced. I am sure with his care in your hands; he will recover well physically and emotionally.

Thank you When he first got here he was VERY wary of everyone, and he was scare of our big dogs too. He's still wary of us a little bit (though not as bad), but he is getting better with our dogs. See the post and picture right above you!

Hi lily... So nice to your mom and your family that you treat the dog as your own one and give him a shelter in your home. I know it is quiet hard to adopt or maintain too many pets but still i am proud of your family. I am an animal lover and a member of PETA, i cant think any misjudge with animals or birds. So i appreciate your work a lot. have a nice time.
