The disadvantage of using shortcut words

May 9, 2012 2:05am CST
As i have remembered since the text message was used as way of communication the spelling ability of an individual was affected. I observed it by myself, im a lot of texting than calling because it is economical. The next thing i found out was that whenever i used to wrote a formal letter i found myself doubtful with my spelling even if its the simple one. I bother myself looking over on dictionary which is time consuming. I heard it also from others and realize that its not only me suffering from it. For now I really try to complete my words as will as my sentences whenever i do texting.

This is the most common problem that has been done by SMS messaging. In my own experience, I can still manage to spell correctly whenever I use my computer in doing formal letter. Same with using cell phone, I can manage to use shortcut words when texting. It really depends on one's self on how they should not be affected by the influence of using shortcut words.

I agree that the issue of misunderstanding is prevalent, especially in SMS. I often encounter this problem everyday since each person I know has his or her own way of shortcut their messages. I do shortcuts hut as little as possible to minimize confusion and I hasn't affected my writing skills in computer or longhand.

To me text messages is a plague that has festered and utterly damaged the spelling of many people. There are people who fall into their texting habits when they are typing up something on the regular Internet and that really is painful to read as you can tell. You've never seen something truly awful until there was a blog where half of the most is written in text speech. And I have rather hate when people shorten words, it rather proves pure laziness and all of that. "U" is the utter bane of my existence, because it is shortening a three letter word. I have said it before, I'll say it again, if people could get away with sometimes shortening the word "I", they would. Text speak gives me a headache and is extremely confusing.

I hardly use shortcut words since I think it is informal. And it is not very respectful to write words like that in my opinion. And not everybody can really understand it. I prefer to word simple words but not shortcut words. I love China

Precisely. This shortcut that most of us using thru texting gives a lot of disadvantages. Sometimes we are also misunderstood for using shortcut words. And yes, spelling is the worst of all.

Yeah, we hear a lot of adults whining about it (especially teachers). I don't really have that problem though. Never really had it either. I just view it as 2 different (sub-)languages. The only problem I have is that I almost never have to write anymore with my current job or at home. I also start doubting the spelling, just because I haven't seen that word in months.

Hi sherlysinguran, shortcut words syndrome has never been my problem, as a matter of fact I kind of suck at it. That is because I never really use shortcut words when sending sms, unless of course it is necessary. But it has never been a habit. Reason being is that I used to work as an English Trainer and it pained me to see some of my students having a hard time getting high grades because they kept on using shortcut words on their exams.

I myself also notice the same. That is why, I decided not to be so fond of shortening or abbreviating words. It really gives a bad effects on our writing as we tend to be used with the spelling of some words which is not correct. Another negative effect of it is that it causes misunderstanding. I feel upset with messages that are very abbreviated because sometimes I tend to miss what is the real message of the sender for me.

good day sherlysinguran, with reference to your main topic, honestly i will not exclude myself in that scenario. that i was also doing the shortening of words when it comes to texting. as a result, i found it hard to deal with my previous supervisor who is not familiar with text shortcuts. as i need to write down the correct spelling or else he will got mad reading those short expressed words. that during those times, i have realized its disadvantages as i have adopted the short way of sending text messages. and after a long years of working on that company, i have found myself doing the right way of texting, as in typing the right spelling of the words. so now, i have the habit of typing the right words instead of using the shortcuts again.

I'm not fond of word shortcuts.I don't even understand some of it. I think Its better to use spell the words completely to be understood. There are times when people might misunderstand the meaning of the words and mislead into something else. Happy myLotting!

Yeah. It's been a year since I graduated in college. I also text a lot that's why I already forgot some of the spellings of the english words. What I do is I text only using our native language and not using ENGLISH. If I do that then it will become a habit of using misspelled english words. I don't want that I will be poor in english because it is one of the important languages in the world. That's why I joined mylot because here you can't post using shortcut/misspelled words.
