Before Christianity came to the British Isles (and other countries), there were many gods who were worshipped. Some of them were gods or spirits which were supposed to inhabit particular places - especially springs, woods, mounds, mountains and other 'special' locations. These local gods were supposed to be the guardians of these sites. After the people were converted to Christianity, some of these gods were also 'converted' and became saints whose name was given to churches. Other gods and spirits became part of local folklore and stories were told of them as fairies and evil or mischievous spirits. They were no longer worshipped as gods (because the Christian God commands that 'ye shall have no other gods before me') but they were not forgotten (and still are not, in many places).
