Like most we replace things when we have to not always because of the need to save electricity. Best way to save is like you have done get energy efficient appliances, unplug things like coffee pots when not in use, use CFL or LED bulbs, don't turn on lights or a/c until you have too.

Hi my friend, you are absolutely right. Since I started living solo and independent and paying all my bills, I learned to apply practical ways to save and cut my monthly bills. Yes, it is true that we can save more from electricity consumption with new appliances. However, when you are out of the budget, one way to cut bills is cleaning your appliances. LED lights are more advisable to use than bulbs and cleaning them at least once a month is great because their efficiency is lessened when the lights are coated with dusts and cobwebs. Refrigerators, ovens, bread toasters and other items need to be cleaned regularly if not always. Another way to save from electricity bills is to unplug appliances that are not in use. Appliances that are plugged even when not in use like the TV or PC can still consume approximately 20%, hence, when you unplugged them, you can save at least 20% of it. Moreover, on TVs or radios, the higher the volume, the higher is wasted.
There are certainly many ways to safe electric bills. It is just a matter of discipline.
