Do you open your car door so wide that you dent/hit the car beside you?!

I don't understand why people open their car doors so wide and hit the car beside them (and even ding/dent/scratch the car beside you). If you are hitting someone's car you aren't giving any dings to YOUR car but the car BESIDE YOU. I was going grocery shopping while my boyfriend was in the car. He was watching the lady pull in besides our car. She couldn't park correctly (neither does it look like she can drive because her cars all dinged up) and then she pulls out and parks to the right of our car. When she gets out BAM she hits the door and walks off if nothing happened. Hello? Someone's in the car and can see what you just did! My boyfriend went out and questioned her because now our car has a 3 inch long ding that would not have happened if she had a common curiosity to open her door enough for her to get out. Normal thing you would do is apologize right? She says, well what can I do. If you bring your car for this ding the dealership will laugh at you. Excuse you, we wouldn't have this problem in the first place if you didn't open the door so wide. Then she asked why are we making it a big deal? Because obviously if no ones in the car, then no one would know. But someone was in the car and saw it/witnessed it. I told her to imagine how many cars you ding/dent for what? You can get out of your car without hitting the car next to you. She did end up apologizing but it wasn't because she felt sorry, because she didn't want "arguing to happen". She's lucky it wasn't a new car. Even grocery shopping last year, a worker at a grocery store pushed a bunch of CARTS right into my car and acted as if nothing happened. I had a long scratch on my car. I went in and told the manager what had happened and they reimbursed my money. Are you aware of what happens when you leave your car unattended? I can only imagine. Do you open your door wide or just enough that you fit?

Well since I live in the city that kind of thing happens all the time. I am glad at this point my car is old and I don't care anymore. But when I park in a lot I always make sure I do not hit the car next to me because I remember when I had new cars. I know the feeling. But it seems like people just don't care anymore.

I totally understand you, because this is happening here in Europe too. But what can you do, if some "idiot" park his car beside you and and he doesn´t care if it is only 30cm from yours. Practicly you can not enter into your car unless you (gently) lean doors on other car. But however I agree with interia4, that people just don´t care anymore.

Well, thank you for agreeing. I understand your anguish with this issue. It is frustrating to have that happen all the time. I also believe there are more people these days and thus more cars on the road. I would love to leave the city and go somewhere that is less populated. But this is where I am and I cannot leave just yet. Maybe one day.

I live in the City as well. It does seem like people don't care. There are a handful who do, and don't. You can tell if someones careless by how their car is. Her car was all messed up. Even if you have an old car, and you tidy it up then it's shown too. @ Jakop92, if you gently lean that's fine. Like put your hand on your door so it won't hit or a nice way. This lady didn't, she opened the door wide, hit the car then took her sweet time getting out. Then walks off. If you were to do that... make sure there isn't anyone in the car int he first place!!

First of all, why would you open your door so wide if you are on the streets where you can bump doors of other cars as well? Might have used to the fact that you don't own the street and be more careful and always think of things that might happen when you open your car door. I remember such news about not being locked the car doors that's why the child came rolling out of the car and the father who was driving hurried himself out just to get the child out side the car...

The girl in your story is really inconsiderate of other people around them, same as the worker in the grocery you talked about... Gosh! Why would they don't feel sorry if they are the ones who made the mistake. What if they are in your shoe, what would they feel about having scratch on car. Even if it was just an old car, you still made a mistake and you have brought trouble to other people. Yes, the news about the child fallen from the inside of the car was from china. I found videos for that. The father of the child is the driver. Seems like he didn't lock the doors and put on seat belt to the child. Luckily the child was saved just minor bruises, the news stated. http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/12150097-video-child-falling-from-moving-car-onto-busy-road-in-china http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXA1Rfh-Ubg http://www.emirates247.com/videos/4-year-old-s-miracle-escape-after-fall-from-moving-car-2012-05-14-1.458484 There it is.

She acts like she's the queen of the street. No common curiosity. She could fit easily without opening the door wide enough to hit the car beside her. Wow that is crazy! The news about the child -__-

This is really bad habit open the car door so other side car driver hit the car. The car owner should take some precautions. Because car maintenance is more costly than purchasing cost. I have no car but whenever purchase always take care and will not leave the door open.

hi, actually when i dont have a car but when i ride to a taxi and i will go down or go ride i will never open so wide the door of the taxi because there is a possibility to bump it by other car near or in the side of the taxi.sometimes i will look first if there any car come near to the door before i open it just to be safe.

That sure is bad. At least she should have apologised rather than behave like that. It sure is annoying to have scratches on your car especially when you have not done that. People should be a little more careful and not do things that will damage things of others. I'm sure its not just your car but many others who have faced the same problem. Many a times when we come back we find that our car either has a dent or a scratch and we cannot do anything about it.

Yeah exactly my point. Just apologize and move on but she didn't want to accept it. People should respect other peoples property. Yeah, I have dents/scratches from people that I haven't seen but if I was there and saw it with my own eyes then it'd be another story :)

Well I would say it depends on the person. I would be forgiving to a person who is 400+ pounds, that is really huge, and has no choice but to open the door really wide. Now I really cannot accept smaller people doing it, as it is simply not necessary for them, they just have no consideration for others.

Hi there, Oh just the other day I did this accidently as I got out of my car. I was opening my door gently and carefully and oops..slipped and it tapped the car next to me and I do mean "tapped". I looked and it did NOT leave a mark at all. My car is white and hers was black so it would have showed right up. There was a young woman sitting in the driver's seat and her window was down and I spoke to her 3 times. She glanced up at me and looked away without responding so I started walking off. It was all so strange and I am glad I had my daughter with me as a witness. I turned and looked back and this girl was in front of my car and writing down my licence plate #!!! So I headed right back. I asked her again to please look and see if she felt I had done any damage. She yelled at me, "Well you SLAMMED your door right into my car!!!" I said , "No I accidently tapped it and I am sorry for that." I then asked her to look at it for damage. she rolled her eyes and looked and said, "No, you are fine". I apologized again. And she said, "Well next time be more careful!". She not only was very rude but I also feel she may have filed a false claim had I not gone back and verified that there was no damage. So not only should you apologize and speak to the owner in such an event but for your own protection as well, you should verify right there with a witness that no damage occured.

I don't do it carelessly, but there have been times when it has happened. Each time I go examine the car to see of any damage has been done. I feel that's the right thing to do. Fortunately I have not had any problems. There are times I have come back to my car and see where someone has hit it with their door and while I don't like it, there's nothing I can do unless I see the person who did it.

The most resentful if I get scratched or dented my car, when parked. Yes, you are correct. The car is parked beside me would open the door too wide, and damaged my car's body. I was not able to resolve this matter to the parking clerk or manager of the building. Better to park the car in a safer place, although some distance from the goal.
