Nope not talking about me. Coconut my chihuahua/papilion mix, sleeps up over my head on a pillow above mine. Often, Ive felt like petting her and speaking before i go to sleep. So sometimes I look up there and her eyes are open but she is snoring! The first time i noticed this i spoke to her several times before she even stirred and looked at me. well, it seems she sometimes sleeps with one eye or BOTH even open. I wonder if thats part of being a watch dog? does your pet ever sleep with open eyes?

You talk of animals who protect us. There was this story on people.com about a pitbull who saved her owner. The woman was passed on on the railroad tracks and the conductor could not slow the train in time. The eight year old pitbull the woman had, dragged her to safety, and took a partial hit herself. They had to amputate her right front paw, and her pelvis was broken, but with rehab they think the dog will walk again and be fine. (The conductor had thought initially the dog and woman were both hit. Can you imagine that panic?)
What killed me was when the woman's son showed up on the seen (he's also a police officer), he saw the dog, the dog's paw all mangled, and the dog's tail started wagging. Amidst the pain that dog had, she wagged her tail.
Here is what makes me suspsicious. Why was the woman unconscious? The story did not say. I think she was drunk. The son of the woman is taking the pitbill home with him and his girlfriend and 2 golden retrievers to heal. Doesn't that make you suspicious? 'Cause if that woman was drunk she doesn't deserve a dog. I'm just thankful the dog lived. The son said he owes his mom's life to the dog, the pitbull he rescued and gave his mom 3 years ago.
Sweet story I thought.

oh Ambie thats so cute. now i know a lot of animals keep watch as they sleep. we are so protected or maybe they just are afraid they will miss something
shadow, yes dogs really love to sleep with someone, actually i think all pets do. perhaps they feel safer also.

My German Shepherd not only opens his eye while sleeping, his mouth opens, too.
He loves to sleep with me on my bed, someti . mes I wakes up at night and I see a pair of shining eye in front of me.
That was soooo scaring !!!! But when I notice his snoring, I can't help laughing.
And usually on the next day, I can see a little "pond" under his mouth.
I decided to check it up at night.
I found his mouth was widely opened an his tongue fell off his mouth.
Sometimes I can also heard his moan at night...XD
And the next morning his saliva pond will be bigger.
What he dreamed last night??? Females?? XD
Maybe when he is mature enough one-day, there'll be another "pond" in front of his *** o

Cats actually have to squeeze their eyes shut, and when Taj was a baby he was kept in a carrier next to a bed with someone who kept a very bright light on all the time... he now sleeps a lot with his face buried in his front paws to block the light - amusing actually...

Our youngest cat, Colbert, sleeps with one eye open. Especially when he knows we are around and are calling to him. My daughter will call out to him when she hasn't seen him around for awhile. He is usually up on her bed snoozing. He will turn his head all weird and have one eye open. Silly cat.

I have never noticed if Reggie (our Pomeranian) sleeps with one eye open or not. I know even if he is more asleep than awake usually when I come to bed at night he will move from my side of the bed to let me in. He likes to sleep at the bottom of my feet usually or right next to one of us when the other one is not there.

I can't say that I've ever paid that much attention to the way that my pets sleep, so I honestly don't know if they sleep with one of their eyes open. However, I have known one person in my life that did sleep with one eye open all the time. That person was my grandfather on my mother's side. I remember when I was little and I first noticed it, it was something that really freaked me out. I think that the reason that he slept with one eye open had to do with the fact that he was a WWII veteran.

oh that certainly makes sense. poor man. it does freak a kid out though. i just remembered an aunt that had a husband that she said could sleep not only with an eye open but standing up also i remember it freaked me out hearing about it.

Oh yes, very common for dogs to sleep with their eyes open. Actually mine sleeps with both eyes open and rolled back into her head. It looks really creepy to see the whites and sometimes reds of her eyes ...plus she twitches so that makes it even stranger ;)

I have never had a pet that slept with one or both eyes open to best of my knowledge. However, one of my buddies when I was in Army usually slept with both eyes open. This was the case even when he had been out on a night on the town and had had a lot to drink.

Hi bunnybon7,
I am rofl because you said her eyes were open but she was snoring and I have never seen this before! My mom has a dog and her eyes are always closed when she sleeps. I wonder if your dog actually sees while sleeping. Did you ever video tape her where you can hear her snoring? You should send it to Americas Funniest Videos. It might win some money. One of the funniest things I've ever heard and if you do video tape it, I want to see it (and hear it), LOL!

I'm not sure. I know my best childhood friend used to sleep with her eyes open sometimes. I'm not sure why that happens. Maybe there is just some short circuit that forgets to tell the eyes to close?
