I have have written alot lately in this category but it seems that my wieght consumes my life here lately. I am miserable with it. Anyways I have a horrible problem with midnight snacking. Like getting up in the middle of the night and eating, and I know if I can stop this then I will be able to lose weight. But stopping it is not as easy as it seems because alot of the time that I eat in the middle of the night I am half asleep, and I wake up the next morning going crap I at that. So I have a crazy idea, but I have to do what is good for me right. I think at night I am going to take all of my favorite snack foods put them in a box and put them outside in the car. That way when I wake up there is nothing for me to grab. So am I crazy or no. Help me out.

Hi SissyRose, It sounds like a great idea to put your favourite snack food out of reach or at least hard to get. Midnight snacking could jeopardise any diet regime you may be trying to get yourself into. For me, once I sleep, I seldom wake up to eat. Usually I would wake up to drink because I'm thirsty due to the hot weather. But during my waking hours, especially near sleep time, I'd be snacking almost non-stop right after dinner. It's tough to get out of the habit. Now, I'm trying to record all the food I'm eating on my cellphone. It calculates how many more calories I'm entitled for the day. It helps me to be aware of the food that I'm eating, the amount of calories in it. It has also encouraged me to exercise more, even merely walking at a leisurely pace for half an hour a day. From all these recording, I have refrained from snacking too much. Or I choose a protein-rich drink to squash my hunger pangs at the end of the day.

I find recording not too difficult now that I have a smartphone. It used to be that I have to record on the computer. I got lazy because I need to switch on the computer whenever I need to record my food. But now, with apps, it's easy. I take a minute to record what I had for each meal. I make it a point to record as soon as I have something to eat so I won't forget. The other reason is I wanted to find out how many calories left I could consume for the rest of the day. If I find that my calories are running out, I would go out to do some exercise, so I can eat more. I used to have problems recording my expenses as well. many people do not do it because it seems like a hassle to record these things on paper or in a notebook. But with smartphone apps, it's a breeze. And there is no reason for people not to do these to help them themselves financially and bodily fit!

I had a co worker whose husband had a work accident and became disabled, in that he was always home. He ate okay when awake, but he also sleep ate. . . and said it was her not him. He was the one with chocolate frosting on his face and pillow. In situations like that I would make certain that the food is not here to be had. He would also have bowls of cereal, etc. I would go ahead and put the foot out of reach and try to have a healthy snack before bed.

Im glad to hear that I am not the only one who does this. I have gotten rid of most of the unhealthy snacks but it doesn't matter if it is healthy or not if you eat it in the middle of the night. So I am with you on getting it at least a foot away. I just feel like I know myself well enough that if it's in the house I am going to try to get to it, so if I take it outside all night then there is nothing I can do but wait till morning

Boy, I had my share of typos on this one. Put the food out of your immediate reach if you need to. More than a foot, probably. I worked in a nursing home dining area where we had to put a chain around a refrigerator and put a padlock on it. There were dementia patients with Alzheimer's who would go in and eat and drink everything including half and half and salad dressing. I tend to not make cookies or buy them because that is one food I cannot stop on. I do better if I bake them and put them in the deep freeze outside, and lock it.

I think it is a good idea to put things where you can't reach them, because the temptation to eat the food while we are tired late at night can be far too high. However, you should take some time to think about whether you should have bad foods in your house at all. If you just stopped buying them when you were out shopping, there is no way that you would be able to eat them because the fact is that they just wouldn't be in the house at all. This is what I do now, as I know that I cannot trust myself if there is any kind of junk food around where I am at the time.

I know just how hard it is when you are trying to control your weight; over the last 16 months or so I have lost 110 pounds. I have done this by completely changing my eating habits and eating healthily. I eat 3 good meals a day aand eat so that I am completely satisfied and do not feel the need to snack in between meals. I would suggest to avoid binging as you describe the best think would be to avoid buying the snacking foods so that there is nothing 'naughty' to binge on. Keep some chopped vegetables to nibble on if you really have to eat something, good luck, I'm sure that you'll do it!

My suggestion would be to just tell yourself NO. Really, really try not to do it. If that doesn't work, then you should take further actions. Whatever works for you is best. You know? But also, how much healthy food is in your house? You can't try to lose weight with debbie cakes and icecream in your cabinets and freezer. Get rid of the junk food. Buy all healthy food every time you go to the store and if you do snack, at least it'll be healthy.
