Have you ever been embarassed on your birthday?

Saturday was my birthday. Hubby took me shopping to get some new clothes, then we went out to dinner. Everything was going great.. but then at the end of the meal a bunch of the servers came out and started singing Happy Birthday. At first I thought they were singing to someone else because I did not think my husband would have done that.. but he did. They were singing to me, and I got a free ice cream sundae. It was definitely embarassing.. but a little bit fun too. I'd never had that happen to me before. It didn't end there. While we were out he had the kids decorate the house, and when we got home the kids were all hiding and then jumped out and yelled "Surprise". I bet that was a lot of fun for them! Have you ever been sung to at a restaurant by the staff for your birthday?

Years ago, I was eating in a very posh restaurant and there were a due of violinists who would not leave us alone. It was mortifying, and really put us off our dinner! I'm glad you had a lovely birthday. Congratulations on another year well lived :)

You gotta tip them to get them to leave maybe. Mariachi bands would have the same effect on a private meal it would seem to me, but it would not be so posh.

I think they were concentrating on us as we were pretty much the only diners! It was a lovely and very expensive hotel, but we felt terribly out of place for the entire weekend!

I've never been to a posh restaurant.. but I'm sure violinists would put me off my dinner too.. especially if I felt like they were watching me!

OMG, I know you were surprised with all the fuss they made over your birthday this year. I've had several events similar to yours, the most memorable when I was 16 years old in 1960 and visiting in Florida at my Aunt's home. My parents and a girl friend of mine took vacation there and it happened to be during the time of my summer birthday. We went to a place called Morrison's Cafeteria for lunch and they surprised me not only with singing staff but with gifts, a cake, and friends of my Aunt's who had a son a little older than I was. At the time I had been a soloist for my high school choir and to top everything off they had a lady in the group who played the piano and they all wanted me to sing for them. Talk about embarrassing, they had me sing several songs, not just one. I didn't know any of the patrons of the restaurant and there I was, singing to everyone. It was the one and only time my aunt ever heard me sing, so perhaps, it was a good thing, and the young man who was the son of her friend and I dated for several years after that. I spent several summers with my aunt after that vacation. It is one of those memories that will always stick in my mind, because as my mom said, it was the first time anyone had truly surprised me with something I had no clue about. Thanks for the discussion.

I don't think I've ever had restaurant servers sing to me personally but I've been at a table where it was done to another person in our party. It is pretty embarrassing which is why I usually threaten family that they better not even think about doing it lol. Happy Birthday by the way! I haven't had internet in a few days so I missed it till now.

First off, belated HBD! I've been saved from this embarassment ever since my son was born. He was born on my birthday. He is now at an age where he enjoys being serenaded by servers in restaurant. And having the free ice cream. I get to enjoy the singing (and a little bit of the ice cream), yet I am not the focus of all the fun!

Do you mind giving up the attention for your son? Or are there other ways you celebrate your own birthday apart from his? My son was born the day after my birthday, which falls in the same week as Mother's day and every few years one of our birthdays will be on Mother's day. So I don't get a lot of attention for either my birthday or Mother's day, mostly because we usually can't afford to do anything special for me since we are doing stuff for my son.

I don't really mind not having all the attention. As long as that I see my son happy on his birthday, then I already get a little happiness out of it.

That has happened thrice, thanks (or no thanks?) to my friends. The first two, I was younger and in college. The last one, just this year on my birthday. Twice, I got free ice cream, once free cake.

Now that makes four birthdays on Saturday that I know about, wow. Sure, I have been sung to at a restaurant. You have to do that to get the free food. What I found embarrassing once was to be with someone who lied about it being their birthday so they could get the free whatever it was. I agree, your kids probably loved surprising you at home. Happy Birthday.

Thanks. That has never happened to me before, and I've never been with anyone who has lied about their birthday. However, I can think of a few people I know who probably would do such a thing. I don't really think it's worth it for a free ice cream, but that's just me. I'm not really a huge fan of ice cream in the first place and rarely do I save room for dessert when I go to a restaurant. I suppose if it were a free appetizer I might do it!

I would agree with you about the appetizer being better. I prefer savory things.

That's cool! Happy belated birthday. The only time I can remember being embarrassed on my birthday was when I was thirteen. I should preface it with saying when I was 13 I was already 5'11 and was wearing a C cup. I'm telling you this so the following won't seem so strange. We went out to eat, and I went up to the counter by myself to ask the guy at the front something, I don't remember what. To my surprise he started flirting with me, in a way I couldn't miss. All the sudden my dad barges up and growls, "She's thirteen." Well, that backed the guy off and I went back to my seat mortified.

I've been embarrassed, but not that way. I was 5, and I don't remember what I did, but my mom made me stand in the corner during my birthday party. I was so made, I told her she couldn't do that to me on my birthday. "5 more minutes," she said. By the time I was done, it was an hour in the corner.

Why should you feel uncomfortable about an experience like this? Can't you just give in to the fun? My sister and brother-in-law always took me out to dinner for my birthday. Once, toward the end of a meal, I announced that I had to go to the bathroom. "NO!", my brother-in-law (Harry) insisted. I looked at him like he was crazy. "I really have to go to the bathroom." "No!" he insisted. The argument continued for a full 5 minutes. And I could see my sister trying to control her giggling. Then, I found out what was going on. The whole staff came out with a big cake lit by a single candle. They asked all of the guests to join in singing "Happy Birthday!" I had a good laugh. When the celebrating was over, I said to Harry, "Now, can I go to the bathroom?"
