Reading straight through devotionals

I've got a few daily devotional books that I've gotten from my mother, and the problem is that I'm not really into reading a little chapter of a book a day. I find myself just reading straight through them. I'm probably not absorbing what the book wants me to absorb by taking the devos one day at a time and reflecting on them... but I'm just not a take devos one day at a time and reflect kind of person. I prefer to read straight through books and not having them sitting around on my nightstand for ages!
Does anyone else do this? Does anyone else out there even like reading daily devotionals? Can you tell me why, and what is is about them that you like?

I read them as a kid, they were little stories i liked them alot. I used to read one a night but, i would find myself like you wanting to read more. Nowdays i will start a book and read it till its done and i will read most of the day sometimes. then i wont read one for a while because, i am busy doing art and craft projects. when iwas in school i read all the time i wish i could get into it more again but, some times im just not it the mood.

I'm still a big reader, never fell out of the habit and I hope I never do. But it's hard for me to read something a little at a time, and I'm not sure that's ever going to change either.

I tend to do that sometimes! But then I get bored with whatever I'm reading one a night of and just wind up reading my fun book.

that's good that you still make time to read a lot.
I guess its not completely a bad thing, maybe you should read one a night like your suppose to but, read something else at the same time.

Yes, I have done a similar thing. If the book is well-written, then it is hard to put down and you keep on reading. I also agree with you that the intent of a devotional is to slow down, and 'chew' on the shorter daily piece. Consider it, ask questions, figure out what it is saying and how that can be applied directly in your life. Finally, renewed in your faith, pray to your heavenly Father and He will meet your needs.

I understand what you are saying. Sometimes the content of a devotional can be quite distant from where the current focus of our heart and soul. In that case, it may be hard to connect and find good application.
Other times, the devotional hits you right between the eyes because it lines up with your own recent thoughts.
Have a nice day.

I'm still looking for that devotional that hits me right between the eyes. Until then, I'll just read my Bible.

I think the main reason I have trouble slowing down through devotionals is because I raely find one I really want to chew. They all seem like impersonal rehashed information. But I'll try the next time I read one to do what you recommend.

I'm not a fan of internet reading. I just prefer having the book in my hands. So that's a no for me, but thanks for the idea.

I used to try to follow little books with daily devotionals. I found that, like you...I wanted to keep reading and reading to know more about what I was reading about.
Just as effective, I have found is that without using the little devotionals, if you have a problem or question that's been nagging you, all you have to do is open up your Bible and a lot of times, you just kind of end up reading what you needed to read for that problem strangely enough.

That's a great idea, and thanks for suggesting it. I guess one of the reasons I'm not fond of reading devotionals is because I hardly ever feel like the author is actually speaking to me personally, or offering advice or comfort for me. I have often found that when I read my Bible I often read things that I needed to hear.

I found getting a daily devotional online was the only way I could manage it too
But is reading straight through a devotional really a BAD thing
I mean, doesn't that just mean we're hungry for those words?
When I'm reading my Bible about a certain subject or question I have
I tend to read a lot of it! That just means I'm hungry for the words about my Lord
and, to me, that's not a BAD thing.

You're right, it isn't really a BAD thing... but my Mom does scold me for it. She says I'm not taking the proper time to reflect and meditate on what I've read.
