It works like a gift cheque. You can use the gift card in purchasing items on amazon or you can use it as a gift to your friends if you would rather not give them money. Most of my friends in the US gives me amazon gift card but I have not used it yet. Probably soon as I have been wanting to buy some books which I cannot find here in the Philippines.

When you purchase or redeem for Amazon Gift cards, you then use them against purchases you would make at Amazon.
For instance if you were going to buy something for $15, in the check out you would use the gift card. You would type in its code where it says to and your total for purchase would now be $10 instead of $15.
If you have more than one, you can use more than one in a single purchase.

I have never purchased and amazon gift card but my understanding is that you buy this as a gift for someone. For example instead of buying an item from amazon, you pay $5 and buy a gift card. Then you give the card to the person that you want to buy a present and this person can purchase anything that he/she likes from amazon and thos $5 will be deducted from the price.
