Our dog can't take the heat. She loves to lay in the sun during the cold weather but as soon as the heat starts she wants the A/C on in the house. She is a hound and I thought hounds loved the heat. Well maybe some do but ours doesn't.

Why do you think hounds must love the heat? I don't think there is a dog that loves the heat. I remember a friend's dog that used to walk only in the shadow of the trees or buildings. If he had to walk in the sun, he used to run as fast as he could to the nearest shadow.
I heard a friend saying that A/C is not too good for dogs. She uses a kiddie pool for her dogs to cool during the hot summer days.

We lived in he desert for many years and some of our dogs loved to just ly in the sun, even in the Summer time. I thought our hound would be one of those. She does ly in the sun early in the day but it isn't long before she is wanting in to cool down. In the winter she sleeps in her bed under several blankets, sometimes
when i reach under there to give her a pat it's really hot. But I feel she knows what is best for her and let her go where she wants.

Heat tolerance and love towards heat depends on the species and breed of the dog. My German Shepherd loved sun to an extent. But I knew another German Shepherd owner in my neighborhood; her dog simply cant stand the sun.
Sometimes the genetic makeup is a problem. Heat intolerance genes might be formed due to mutation and might get spread through certain breeds. Anyway, train your dog to go to shady region to avoid heat. Creating an A/C environment for dog is like insulting the creature's natural abilities- or treating it like Richie Rich,
Happy mylotting,

Ajith.

Well my cats used to sleep on the side of my outside bathroom. She used to sleep on dry surface and the water near to the bathroom makes her to cool. Seems like it works like AC.

Just because one dog likes the heat, doesn't mean that a brother of the same litter will. It all has to do with the genetics, and body chemistry of each dog. My dog is a strudy border terrier pit mix. Her head is as hard as a rock, and your bruised legs know it two days later if she runs into your them at full speed. Anyway, she will walk down one side of the block and pant like she is going to collapse from heat exhaustion. Just seems to overheat quickly. Don't turn on the AC just for the dog though, make them find a cool spot to cool themselves down. My dog will go right to the tile after a walk and lay there like a frog until she cools down. Sometimes if it is real hot I will put on a fan and she will sit in front of that. Also, you can always give your dog ice cubes as well to chew on and cool down quickly.

My dog loves cool things but not air conditioner.
He usually sneaks into the kitchen when I don't notice him.
Then, he will hide into my big fridge!!!!!
Sometimes I open the door and scares by him. He's just like a black furball while he is sleeping in the fridge.
Once, maybe it was too comfortable, he even left his urine in my fridge!!!!WTF!!!
Now, my fridge is locked...XD.

My cats do not necessarily want the A/C but they really enjoy a tile or wood floor to lay on and sometimes a fan. I have one that as he has aged does stay in more when the weather is really hot.

Hi,
I don't have any pet in my house. But I like to listen interesting things about pets. Like us they also feel hot and can't tolerate the heat. I feel very funny that your dog needs A.C.
