I was in the middle of responding a posts here 8 hours ago, and then power failed! LOL It is been everyday now that we lost our power. It was very hot in the house and there was nothing to do here so we decided to hang out at the mall instead for like 5 hours..
What do you usually do when there is a power failure?

Ya malls are one of the best places to hangout during power shut downs . Also I go out to a friend's place where electricity is available . Also beaches are a good place to go because you get a continuous supply of cool air in the beach at no cost . In India we face severe power shortages especially during summers . Do you come from India too ??

Wow , In India too we face rampant power shortages . But people here flock into the beaches during the power cuts so that they can enjoy the cool breez and the water at sea water by swimming at the beaches .

We do get power failures from time to time; one lasted 3 days! After that, I protected myself from these things, as losing food and being uncomfortable for 3 days was not fun. All of my critical systems are on a battery backup (computer, fish tanks, etc.) I have battery backup on my TV as well. Those last for about 15-45 minutes depending on load. Once I see that a power failure may last longer, I start my gasoline powered generator. It has an isolation circuit, and powers the battery circuits and the refrigerator. The lights are not on this system, so I have a small lamp in each room that is on the backup circuit, as well as battery powered lights and a good supply of batteries.

That has happened 1 time in about 19 years, but that once was enough for me. Some neighboring communities had power, so you had to go over there to get ice to keep some things cold in a cooler. Had radio and some light with batteries, but all of the food in the refrigerator perished. It was due to a micro-burst, a weather phenomena that wreaks havoc when it hits. In my case, it turned all of the electrical wires in the area to spaghetti, and knocked them down.

I cleaned the house so i can sweat more like I'm exercising. Like tomorrow, there are announcement that tomorrow morning up to 5pm we will have power cut off. So I decided to stay late here and do the cleaning tomorrow.

well here for us it does not happen very often only in a storm and when it gets bad outside and i think the power might go out i usualy get my matches and candles out and look for my flashlights as i hate being in the dark, and usualy our power compnay is very good and they hav eit back on real quick so we dont really have time to do anything we just sit and talk until it comes back on.. take care :)

i imagine your situation there. it must be very disappointing. well, malls are also good for hanging-out. that can be a consolation. anyway, the government must be doing something for the power failure. lives and activities are disrupted because of this. this must not be happening in a country that tries to lure and attract investors and tourists.

Wow, 5 hours without electricity! That is certainly a long time! The power hasn't gone out in my neighborhood in... Probably a few months. And when it did go out, it was due to rain, and came back on within an hour. It was at about 2 AM too, so I didn't notice, I was sleeping, but I noticed that my clock reset itself to 12:00. LOL. I guess if the power went out for that long... I might go outside, hang out with friends, or read a book. There are plenty of things to do that don't require electricity!

OH.. that is terrible.. I don't like power failure either.. specially in hot summer days.. it feels like it's the end of everything.. but I found a solution to this.. What I do usually is go out to some mall check some cloths or gadgets .. it is cool over there..

Haven't had that happen in a while but perhaps I should not say that too loud(or type that too loud rather), because that is just inviting it to happen. Still the moment the power goes out, one of two things happen. I either sit their stoic for about ten seconds and then scream when I realize how much work I might have lost. Or I just scream and sit right in a catatonic state.
All our technological advances in the year 2012(and 2011, and 2010 and 2009 and 2008 and 2007 and every other year I found this absurd), and still no one has found a way to prevent power failures. Or rather to prevent squirrels from getting into the power box, because nine times out of ten, that is why the power goes around around these parts. I just stew, try and find some light to read, and hope that it comes back on, because time waits for no one, not even power outrages.

I usually do what you do. Sometimes I waste my time by eating a lot or exercising outside. Go to the mall and do window shopping.

It depends on the time of power failure and room temperature of the house. If it's morning and it's really hot inside the house, I would go outside, bring a chair and read a book until the power comes back. If it's morning and the atmosphere is fine, I would lie down on my bed and wait to fall asleep. If it's night time and the room isn't that cool, I would go outside, together with my siblings and have a chat until the power gets back. If the house is cool, I would start sleeping. That's what I do. I don't usually go to malls or anywhere when there's power failure. It's just tedious for me. Good afternoon, by the way.

Hiya chicgale,
Our power cuts don´t last very long usually as the cold air heaters that are installed here are very expensive to use so that is probably why I should think.
It´s very hot in these Houses too as they are not built of very good material so they retain the heat far too much.
That is great for Winter but in Summer it´s terrible.
I have been out on the Road and it´s cooler out there than in this House which does not have proper ventilation so we have to use our own common sense and leave the doors open for the cool air which does not come in till very late at night.
Very warm at night even at this time no cool breeze or anything lol.xxx
If the power does go we cannot do anything either we are right out in the Country so we just have to wait and wait.xxx
