One which is very commonly used is PhpBB http://www.phpbb.com/ There are several others but this is the one I see most often. Probably the best thing is to look at a number of forums, see which ones you like the look of and then look at the bottom of the page to see which script they are using - if it's not a proprietary script like MyLot's, then there is almost always a link to the script's home page.

I think that's a wise decision. It's a script which one sees around a great deal. You will need a server which supports MySQL and PHP, of course, and you will usually have to pay something for that (though there are a few which will give you 'free' hosting, bearing in mind that nothing is REALLY free!) I would strongly advise that you take plenty of time to read and understand the documentation and how to configure the software. Any forum can only be as good as its administration and security so you need to fully understand the way in which it can be set up. Their own forum - http://www.phpbb.com/community/?sid=62d93c340275bd2ef084cdde4229bce6 - will be immensely useful and I suggest that you spend a week, at least, (preferably more) browsing it and asking questions there.
