Star Trek, The Original Series was created by Gene Roddenberry. He presented a science fiction show that uses technologies based on plausible scientific facts. And would tackle any topics that were forbidden to be discussed in TV back in the 60's. It was the first TV show to have an Afro-American female character, the first interracial kiss, and the first TV program that showcased characters that represented different nationalities (except, of course Mr. Spock who is half human and half Vulcan; he represented the product of mixed marriages, which were highly frowned upon then.

Actually, faster than light speed travel is still not plausible, not is teleportation. Roddenberry's original concept called for a female second in command but the network shot that down.

Star Trek movie is the story on the TV series, I liked the movie but I forgot, how the story and sometimes confused. Hehe...
