Do you feel that video games have made classic board games seem boring?

I was trying to think of some games that would be good for family night. Games that fun and classic. Yet most of the things that I suggest my husband says they sound boring. Since he has started playing video games a lot games that use to be fun aren't anymore. Do you think that video games are causing people to view board games or card games as boring?

I'm glad to hear that even though you like to play video games you still enjoy playing board games. I think that board games are fun and enjoyable. It can be a good and wholesome way for a family to spend time together. I'm hoping that I will be able to find some games that allow us to do that.

A board game like Scrabble is far from boring. For 42 minutes you are thinking and playing and having fun. Both my kids could play well by the age of eleven, and are good enough to beat me at least once out of seven games. Scrabble is great because you can play the game without noise or your favorite classical music in the background. There are Scrabble clubs around the world and at one time I played at the Toronto Scrabble Club. Greatest board game.

I too like scrabble. When my husband and I were first married we played scrabble often. Now though he would consider scrabble boring because you are only making up words. He now likes to play games where he is the person doing things (like on video games). I want our family to play more games but when I ask him about certain games he often says that those would be boring. And I don't want to purchase games if he's not going to play them. As I'm trying to draw us closer as a family. I told him that he should think of some because it's a small thing to do as a family. Even if he perhaps would much rather play his video games we need to spend quality time together as a family and so I let him know that I would like for him to be involved instead of complaining because he thinks something is boring.

I just rated you Dominique; your comment is spot on. You are right when you say that board games can be a family pastime. Everyone can participate. While I like to play only with one player and not three, if you have kids four people can play at a time. It does not mean your husband must give up the video games; it just means that if he wants to join the family and have fun as a whole Scrabble is a great game as it is not only fun it is educational.

Well it has made standard traditional board games far less common than it really is. It is really a shame but there is just really something about that, where things really just have changed because that is where technology is. There are times where many people will not know the joy of playing a board game on a rainy afternoon and in a couple of generations, board games will be right next to actual physical books in things that will be all but obsolete.
Still we live in a push button society where everything is all about high end graphics and immersion. With online gaming and multi-player mode, there is really no need to get with people and sit down with a board game. Of course, I think those creators of board games have noticed this, given how many board games have been adapted right into video games.

I agree with you. Technology has influenced a great deal of things and is pointing us new directions. For example the ability to email, chat, and text people. People rarely send letters through the mail anymore. You are so right about them becoming like physical books. Yeah they are adapting the games into video games as well. I however much love to get together with friends and family, talk, drink coffee and play a good board game.

Yeah I agree with you. I hope that I will be able to find some games that he will want to play. His pickiness is making it difficult. He thinks that word games are boring unfortunately. I don't mind word games myself. I'm just trying to think of some games that we can play together that will give our family quality time instead of always sitting in front of the tv or playing video games.

Hello user
Board games have been are for ages and they can never e boring . Though video games has made a major breAkthrough in te field of entertainment , they can never equal th fun te board games gave us during our childhood days . During my days as children , board games provided me with hours of entertainment with my friends . Though even I enjoy playing video games , the essence of reminiscence provided by the classic board games like checkers and chess cannot be forget .
Especially during my childhood dash , I never had video games and me and my friends used to play games like carrom board , chess , snake and ladders :D and also some times checkers . Those days I did not have knowledge about video games and enjoyed playing these games .
Of late , I stooped playing games and I feel bad because no one plays these games these days and everyone wants to play computer games or video games .
Things are even worse for the current generation of children because they only have video games and computer their indoor games and no body actually cares about the good old games .

I agree with you. I like board games. My husband on the other hand has become very picky about the games he plays. He personally prefers just to play video games which he often plays alone at home. I too think that playing board games with family and friends creates a lot of great memories for those involved. That's why I would like to have us play more games like that. That really encourage interaction and family time. Instead of games that just have you run around on a gaming system and do things on your own. You are absolutely right the young generation is only focused on video games. The majority of them spending all there free time on these gaming systems. Often forgetting about the board games. I want my child to be a board game, and outdoor person. I don't want her sitting in the house all the time only wanting to play video games.

It depends of the person...
I've playing videogames for 4-5 years now, but I still enjoy having a nice game of checkers or a dice game.
Although videogames are a LOT more fun than those classic games, especially if played with friends, sometimes it's nice to change a bit and gather your friends and family and play cards or checkers ;)

No I don't think so, neither do the people I know incl. my kids. Video games are mostly played alone also.

I agree that most video games are played alone. I'm glad that your family enjoys playing other games. I think the classic games allow for family and friends to get together and spend quality time together. I'm trying to have our family do things together that allows us to draw closer together and yet we don't have to spend a lot of money. It's hard though when my husband thinks a lot of things are boring.
