I have just finished reading the Hunger Games trilogy and thoroughly enjoyed the books, I found them really absorbing. The film of the first book 'The Hunger Games' is now showing in the cinema but I am a little hesitant to watch it as so often I am disappointed when I watch a film adaptation of a book that I have enjoyed. Have any of you My Lot members read the book and watched the film? if so what was your opinion? Is the film true to the novel?

there are many things the movie didnt follow from the book, first they toned down the violence and gore because they wanted to market this to teenage girls and teenage girls are not into violence. Then they changed the etnicity of the main character, she is supposed to be an olived skin Multiracial...But knowing hollywood, they decided to white wash her.(a fact I already accepted...Hollywood rarely trust people with color) The movie is still well executed though. -------- The book and movies seemed inspired from the Japanese Novel/Book Battle Royale...similar format only more gruesome.

I expected it be really gory, but as you say, if aimed at the teenage audience, I suppose i had to be toned down! When I read the books I thought that the idea was like a mixture of our TV reality programme 'Big Brother' and the George Orwell book '1984'!!

That is very interesting, I hadn't realised that it was inspired by Greek mythology. I have to admit to have never even heard of BAttle Royal either!!

I've read and loved all the books and I've seen the movies in theaters twice now. I really enjoyed the film, and I thought it was a pretty solid adaptation, one of the best that could have been asked for. There were a number of things from the book that I missed, but overall I think it was executed very well. Some people have already pointed this out, but the blood and gore is very toned down. The violence is still there, but it's not gruesome and the film relies more on implication of violence rather than showing tons of blood. Personally, I'm glad they decided to make that move because I am not huge on violence. Oh, and there's lots of shaky cam. Other than that, I think you would need to see it to decide for yourself.

I agree with you about not liking too much gory detail, and your comments have inspired me to want to go and see the film now!

I read the books twice and saw the film three times. I love the books and I thought that the film was good, but I thought that it could have been so much better, but I must say that Stanley Tucci as Ceasar Flickerman was great casting. I love "The Hunger Games" and I have even been placed into a District. There are test you can take for this. I'm in District 1. The film is somewhat true to the novel, but I was disappointed in the muttations.

District 1 eh, you must be one of the elite!! I think I'd probably be relegated to the 12th District!!!!!

I never heard of Hunger Games books or the movie until a few days ago when my friend told me about it. When she described it to me I thought she was talking about Battle Royale because the concept sounds nearly identical. So I won't be watching this since it looks like a shameless ripoff. Battle Royale novel was also made into a film so you can check the trailer and tell me does it look familiar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIuRjqcpuGQ. But the only thing that confuses me about Hunger Games is that it seems to be aimed for children?

It's certainly not aimed at children although I get the impression that the film may be aimed more at the Twilight type fans.

Many people who watched the movie was disappointed. Its way far from the one you can read on the book as they say. But if you are a fan of Hunger Games up and down you should support them in all ways.

I read the summary of the book- does that count. i was quite disappointed with the movie since it missed out son some parts and i didn't lie their portrayal of Peeta there- but you should still see it for yourself.

Yes, I was going to go with my daughter when she visited this week but unfortunately the film wasn't showing locally on the days she was here.My husband would not enjoy it so I will just have to wait for my daughter to visit again I think!!
