My Cat and Plastic...

Ever since my cat Tiny was a small kitten, she's been obsessed with curling up inside and even licking the plastic bags that I get from Walmart, Dollar General, Family Dollar, etc.. When ever I bring anything into the room that's related to plastic bags she wants to lick on it and insists on laying on it. For a two-year cat would that be considered normal? Or do I have to consult a veterinarian and consider getting her check on? She's never actually eaten the plastic, she just likes to lick on it.

I've had cats who are obsessed with plastic, Scamp loved to lick on them right until he was 14 yrs old.

My cat Tiny does that too. She will either lick on the plastic or try to get inside and curl up in the bags for a nap.

Rygel will lick them, then someone else will come along and flatten it and sleep on it and then another one will come along and pee on it - have I mentioned I have a bunch of BAD cats!

Cats seem to love to play and cuddle with the most simple of things, I wouldnt think this is strange. Just make sure you surpervise her when she is licking the plastic because if she ingests it that would be really dangerous and she would need to be taken to a vet straight away.

Unfortunately I think she might have ingested a bit of plastic.. I spent a few days away from home with my best friend and when I came home there pieces of shredded up plastic from the trash bag and it's contents all over the floor in my room. I always leave her with enough food and her bowl still had food in it when I came back. Then she started throwing up... My mom doesn't exactly like my cat and I don't the money to take her to the vet.. My car doesn't work, so my mom is the only source of transportation I have.. She would literally get highly upset and irritable if I asked her to take me and my cat to the vet. ):

It is not unusual at all for cats to love plastic bags but I am not so sure about the licking part; you may want to consult your vet during your next regular visit about that. Plastic bags are a cat's dream play thing. They love to chase them, play inside them and sleep on them. I am leary of them playing with plastic bags because of the possibility of suffocation. I watch mine like a hawk when I am putting away my shopping. I collect up all the plastic bags and put them safely away so my cats can't get into them; but it is hilarious to watch them play with plastic bags.

Thank you for the information, I'll try to keep that in mind when I take her to the vet. I get scared when she tries to sleep in them mainly because of possible suffocation.. All the other cat's I've owned were never obsessed with plastic so her situation tends to freak me out a little. She's not as playful as she used to me (and she's only 2-years old) but she's rather mischevious when it comes to trash bags. :)

I have had several cats who take an interest in plastic; one who used to spend a good portion of every day licking as much plastic as he could find! he never ate it though--just licked it. A funny habit; nothing to worry about. I have another cat who likes to pee on plastic bags--I can't put one down for more than 5 minutes ANYWHERE. She finds it and then does her business! This habit is clearly more troubling (although the vet says this is normal, too). The positive side of this habit is that she has forced me to get more reusable canvas tote bags to take to the supermarket, so that's a plus!

I have two cats that do this and Im always afraid they would sufficate themselves. My one will climb in it and just go to sleep especially in plastic bags or the plastic for water bottle cases. My Moms cat will sit there and lick it for hours.

I'm not sure if my cat has ever tried sleeping in a water bottle case.. The situation is still kind of weird to me because she's the first cat I've had that has a strong obsession for plastic.
