Any tips on growing asparagus?

I do not know if you are close enough, in Lancaster, to commercial production sites where you can drive up to the asparagus fields, but that is what you need to do. I'm from Georgia, & there is none grown there; but up in Pennsylvania, folks just cut what they need along the highways. When I was living in Delaware for a short time, there were asparagus farms around. If you can identify the plant, you could do as I did:I walked down a railroad spur until I located older plants growing wild, dug out the old gnarly roots & took them home and put them in better soil. Mature roots not only begin producing right away, but can be divided[cut into many pieces] for starting new 'patches' where little cultivation will be necessary. I'm a writer, not a farmer/gardener.
