In my country, badminton has now become such a popular sports that more and more people are going into it. A long time ago it wasn't so and the only people who used to play badminton are families who finds it fun playing it in their neighborhood. Now many badminton courts are built and a lot of badminton clubs and tournaments are active nowadays. Do you have an idea why badminton suddenly gained such great popularity nowadays? Why do more and more playing go into playing badminton?

Badminton has always been one of the top sports in my birth country Malaysia, and ever since young I have been brought up to play and like this sport. In the past, only a few other countries were powerhouses in this sport, namely China and Indonesia. But nowadays, the sport has become more popular with many other countries producing good players in the sport, such as Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Denmark, Germany and Russia. I cannot pinpoint any specific reason why this sport has become so popular, but I feel that because this sport needs many attributes to excel in it, such as speed, skill, technique, tactics, focus and concentration, it appeals to many. Besides, it is also a fun social and competitive sport that everyone can enjoy. I believe the great players of the game such as Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei, Taufik Hidayat and Peter Gade, have become good ambassadors in promoting the game worldwide and they would have contributed at least some effort in popularizing the game.

Thanks for these very helpful information, gerald_lian. Now I know which countries excel in this sports with the information you gave. Although I know that China are usually good with these types of sports ( including table tennis ), I didn't realize other countries like Malaysia and Taiwan are also good with it. The other countries mentioned usually have good support from their government and they usually perform well in any olympic sports, so I didn't wonder if they are also good at badminton.
I agree that badminton has really become popular worldwide and maybe the people you mentioned are one of those who helped make them so. But I really do enjoy watching professions play them on tv, so I can imagine I would surely enjoy playing it as well. I would try to look for a friend who is into badminton and would try it sometimes...then I will see if it would become a regular sports for me.

Yes, they do have a world championship in badminton. I wonder what nationality is the badminton world champion now, anyone knows? And maybe there are also different world bodies in badminton, so there could be different world champions in each body...similar to boxing, there is the WBC, WBA, WBO and all of them have different champions for each.

Hi, me personally would also go for badminton rather than other sports, well I guess, badminton is such a good sports and an exercise as well, you tend to lose weight on this sports because all your body parts are moving. Here in the Philippines, it became so in demand because even if you don't have court to play into you can just play outside your home..not unlike other sport such as basketball and volleyball..

I would tend to agree that badminton would make you lose a lot of weight because when I watch professional badminton players on tv, they seem to be always running and sprinting at the same time just to get to the ball. It's really a fast game compared to other sports.
Yes, I think it would still be fun playing badminton without a net but I guess if you have a volleyball net that would even be more fun.

I enjoy badminton too, it is really fun and also very exciting to watch as everything just happens so quick. It is not as popular in my country, but people will definitely agree that it is really fun. It is a good way for exercise also you are always moving, and the best part is for warm up, all you do is volley back and forth till your ready to smack with your friend.
Cheers!

Yes, I would say in my own experience when I was younger that badminton is indeed a lot of fun. In my youth, we used to have a neighbor who has volleyball net and we use that to play badminton in our neighborhood. Those were good memories of my fun childhood.

Hello friend, I think badminton is getting even more popular these days because of its known benefits to health. I don't play badminton before but when my doctor suggested to try it as an alternative to an otherwise boring exercise routine which I normally had, I learned to love it as it is. Now I am into it and I must say that it helps me lose some weight. My friends after seeing how much I enjoyed and how much weight I lost, started playing it as well. NOw everyone in the office is into badminton these days.

Hi friend, yes when I watch professionals on tv playing badminton I could see how fast they move...running from all parts of the court, so I felt it is really a rigid sports. I do play tennis and I can say it is also a running game and I sweat a lot, but I think badminton is a more tiring sports because you sprint most of the time.

It's easy and at the same time less expensive as well. For example, tennis rackets are a lot more expensive than badminton rackets. I think really good badminton rackets would cost about $100 which is the cost of the cheapest types of tennis rackets. Anyway, I don't have any idea how much it cost to rent a badminton court for an hour...anyone knows? For tennis, it costs me only about $2 an hour of playing in the cheaper club I go to, but when I go to a more expensive club it costs me about $5 an hour including guest fee.
