Are you aware of the dangers of junk food?

Many times we simply grab a hamburger or a pizza, or any other junk food to fill our tummies the quick way. I don´t go much to fast food chains, but I confess to all sorts of sandwichs when I eat alone. If it´s not a well balanced meal, it curbs the hunger, but it does not take care of our body’s nutritional needs. Bread is mostly carbs, even if we use a bread that has more fiber or whole grains. I love a cheese sandwich, but I confess that the cheese I like has a lot of fat that tastes wonderful when melted.
Usually the food we eat doesn´t have the amount of proteins, vitamins or minerals we need. Pills over the counter do not replace real food as scientific journals say.
Then we discover we are overweight and we start dieting. I went up over 10 kilos (more than 20 pounds) after I quit smoking. I ate all the hard candy in the world. I haven´t been able to shed those pounds. I love to cook and I love to eat.
Pastas, bread, yummy fried food, sweets, they are all equally bad. Of course they´d be better if we ate small amounts of them. Why don´t we try it? I need my old body and I want my old jeans to fit.
Do you have a similar experience?

I also have the same experience. I've been struggling with weight loss since I was a kid and there were just few breakthroughs. One time, I got really fat than I usually am. My aunt from abroad came to visit us and we were staying at a hotel for 3 weeks. It was a great experience. We ate a lot and just lied down all day in the hotel. As the vacation was about to end, I the upper part of my foot seemed like it was swelling. When we got home, I weighed myself and gained 10 kilos too. It was the first time I hit 85kgs in my life (I'm only 5 feet tall so that really is way above my ideal weight) so I decided to cut down the junk food. I lost all those 10 kilos. But as time went by, I gained 5-8 kilos again. Last year, I went to an annual appointment with our family doctor and my lab results showed I have high cholesterol. I am obese, we have a family history of diabetes and high blood pressure, and those make me at risk for heart problems. I was prescribed medication to lower the cholesterol and I cut down again on junk foods. I lost 10 kilos and was happy that many of my old clothes fit again. I got some confidence. Now, over the Christmas season this 2011, my aunt visited us again. Compared with the previous visit, I only gained 4 kilos this time. I lost those because of an illness but gained them back. I'm looking forward to lose those weight again. I try to make healthier choices at times but I just can't avoid junk food. I know that many of them are high is salt and fat but it's okay to eat those in moderation/in small amounts.

Teehee, I have most of myself to blame for my weight gain. It's every 3-4 years that she visits us so the hotel vacation is like our treat. There's a breakfast buffet everyday. I'm glad that I didn't gain as much as I did last time (and thank goodness the food wasn't as good as the previous hotel so I didn't get to eat as much this time). Anyway, I'm to blame if I choose to eat more than I can chew and not go to the gym that was always there for me to use. One time she treated us to a fine dining restaurant and I chose a healthy meal instead. I'm just glad it tasted great despite being a healthy meal. As you have mentioned, we often buy or cook food out of love. That's what my aunt does.
Oh, and that is good to hear that your grandchildren are on the thin side.

It seems you will have to have a tlk with your dear aunt. Many times we buy or cook food that are made to put on weigth out of love. I do that with my grandchildren many times, but fortunatly they are all in the thin side.

For 30 years the Food Nazis have tried to tell me that this food is bad and then good and the bad again. I Never listen to them. What I eat they say is junk , well fine! If I don't eat what I want then I won't eat. I rather die than Have to eat something I won't like. So it is pizza , plenty of pizza for me and at least one dessert a night. If I die early , fine! But I have had eaten what I wanted!

My mom was using margarine by the time I came around.I use it to bake. I don't cook. So I guess you would love a ham and cheese omelet!

I just love a ham and cheese omelette! For me, omelettes are the best way I can use all kinds of leftovers. And I add diced cheese to almost every omelette or some chives from my house.

I am not very fond of desserts like you, but I love hams, salami, good cheeses full of fat. I never accepted margerine instead of butter and I´m sure eggs will not add to my normal cholesterol levels. I love omelettes.

Junk food is like smoking, you know it is bad for you, it will bring problems in the future, your body will do the best to prevent you from taking it, but, it tastes so dammed good. I also quit smoking recently, and, althought I do not eat junk food all too often, I do from time to time, specially, I am a pizza lover, and hot cheese burritos, I do not like hamburgers that much, wich is the junk food "per excelance"I think. I don´t know why, but, all good things will either kill you, fat you or are a sin. (Todo lo rico mata, engorda o es pecado...:), I hope they don´t delete me for this little spanish saying, but, it sounds way much better in spanish)

Indeed, everything sounds better in spanish. When I quit smoking, first, I turned to chewing gum, sometimes I felt that I had a truck tire in my mouth, eventually, the anxiety disapeared, but, first two weeks were like living in hell.

I stopped liking chewing gum when I was 13 years old. I lived a year and a half ai the US and chewed a lifetime share of it

I agree with the saying, and it´s one of my favorites. I agree it´s far better in Spanish (isn´t it all?). Fortunatly I don´t much like junk food. I prefer a good barbecue with good red meat and many salads. But I put on 10 kilos in a short time after I quit smoking. I "smoked" hard candy all day long for about a month or so.

Oh, I know the dangers of junk food, alright! It's just that I am glad that I didn't have to die because of it or get sick because of it but I do experience different kinds of reactions from eating them time and again. Take note, I just rarely eat them and during those rare times, after that, I would have my eye lids bulging and itchy.
I just hope no one out there is not as sensitive--ehem, as fragile as me or any of my siblings. It really sucks whenever someone is in my position. I cannot eat junk foods or have synthetic medicine without having to experience some sort of allergic reaction.

I see you have an allergy problem to some ingredient that junk food has. I´m soory for your allergy. But I´m sure you will be healthier for not eating at fast food places.

I have discovered that having some homemade broth around is wonderful instead of junk snacks or too much coffee. It makes me less hungry too.

I agree. According to my doctor and a healer that I regularly consult with, I am healthier compared to if I just leave my health be. Me and my siblings, that is. Instead of junk food, we usually munch, nori (seaweed), noodles (not instant), or fruits. It's way better than junk foods if we're after filling our bellies or for just watching movies. The catch here is that we easily get hungry too.

I am quite similar to you too- i eat whatever is readily available- it's usually bread.. And i rarely watch what i eat- i just choose what is delicious. I don't eat much fast foods these days though since it is not very healthy..and i try t keep away from junk food.. i've been free from them for almost 2 months.

We make our own availabilities. I have loads of pesto in my freezer. I grow my own basil and make pesto to last a year. And so many times I just boil some delicious pasta, cover it with pesto and Reggianito Cheese. Yummy!!! It´s not a well balanced meal, but it´s SO good!

I guess I'm in the same boat with both of you. I also like eating so much and now I'm addicted to soda or softdrinks. I gained about 8 pounds in a years time. Because I have minimized a bit on junk food lately, I'm glad to have shed about 3 pounds so I feel hopeful for better things to come. I also think that exercising a lot would somehow compensate for the amount of food you eat.

I know I need more exercise, but I don´t have much energy since I went through chemo last year. It seems I will have to wait sometime, as the doctor says. Unfortunatly, being ill hasn´t lessened my appetite and one of the things I can do is to cook and I love to do it.

Yes but I think I don't have a choice not to eat them since almost 80% of our food today that are popular in the market is junk food. People who are always on the go preferred to eat on the fast food and their snacks are junk food. When my daughter left for vacation two weeks ago I'm not in the mood to cook for my food. I just grab what's on my fridge and fry, or boiled. Noodles that just put a hot water is fine. And I know it is not right. When my daughter is here I preferred to cook vegetables for us since is quite vegetarian than me.

I could not eat noodles every day, as I don´t like them so much. But there are other foods I like and they are not as difficult to make. Omelettes have protein (eggs) and you can have frozen veggies to thaw or boil to put there. Yesterday I had an omelette with mushrooms and diced cheese. It was wonderful.

Ive talked to other people that donate they also said they gain from eating the healthy food. The workers there said it was normal too. Im sure its the working out that makes you lose weight. Although eating the healthy food and removing the junk from your diet is still a good thing to do.

I don't often go to eat a hamburger or a pizza, or any other junk food. I think it is not really good for our health and it is quite expensive also. I prefer to eat at home, eat food what i cook. My weight is same for 10 years already, 46 kg only and i am very happy with it.
In fact i can eat all type of food and i don't have diet also.
I heard that people will be fat easily by eating junk food, i want to increase my weight too but i really don't like to eat junk food much.

In our home we are not fan of junk food, my husband even stop having Chinese food that always has rice or fried in order to meet his goal. I think the diificult part for us is ice cream because we are smoothies lovers and hard to stop. We do good though we can reduce it to twice a week only hopefully in couple of months we can reach once a month.

In my younger years when I can't understand what is good food and junk food, I didn't care much about it as long as I can have a bite of it. Now that I got educated about the dangers of junkfoods, I became health conscious. Therefore, I have drastically changed my attitude and habits about food choices. I prefer to eat those fruits and vegetables rather than meat and those junk foods found in most stores worldwide. It is better to be healthy than to be sorry.

Most of our diet is rich in carbs only. We have rice always in our choice. After some months I find change in my body due to weight gain. It is hard to find alternative now and we depend on wheat at sometimes. Beyond that I thought of trying some grains which is more nutritious than having rice always.
Fortunately I don't depend on fast foods and even I stopped eating packed fried chips. I know they are tasty but killers. It is right time to care our health from some deadly diseases.

I´m starting to grow some veggies in my garden. Not many, but it does help. You can just take a couple of lettuce leaves without cutting the whole plant, add a coulpe of other veggies and you have a good salad.

Stress and anxiety are some of the causes for putting on weight. I was on a reasonable diet after I went up 10 kilos after I quit smoking and then I discovered that I had a lymphoma. I was in an awful yet not to slim down diet I had to follow all the time I was on chemo. After that, I just wanted to eat all the prohibited foods.

For me, things have been quite the opposite. When I was a teenager, my mother did turn to junk food quite frequently because she was a single parent of three very active children. That meant that there were a lot of nights that she didn't have time to cook dinner and we frequented fast food restaurants very often. Well, since I've been a mother, I try to always make sure that the children and myself are eating healthy meals. Since I've been on my own I've lost over 50 pounds and I've dropped four pants sizes.

I am very found of fast food like shavarma and other items here in Kerala. Usually i used o eat a lot of such fast food. My father gave me a lot of money as pocket. I make use of them to eat a lot. Later my father stopped this pocket money because he found out that he is eating a lot of junk food which is harmful to us. So I couldn't them them largely anymore. This was happened during me teen age during my school life. Now I am not much addicted o junk food because I know the after affect of such food.

Here's what my fiancee and I do. In the spring/summer, we go through a complete cleanse of our body, which means we eat as little meat as possible, we don't eat sweets, our snacks consist of unsalted pretzels, unsalted peanuts and carrots and our dessert is composed of apples, cereal and on occasion frozen yogurt.
In the autumn/winter, I eat as many doughnuts, consume my lady's delicious Boston cream cake and drink as much french vanilla as I want. To be honest, that is the only bad thing we eat in that six-month timeframe.
It's a fun thing to do because you can really learn a lot from your body.
