Coping with Cow's Milk Allergy

cow's milk allergy is most frequently found in children. One contributing factor is when cow's milk is given and consumed before a baby reaches six months old. At that age a baby's gastrointestinal system is not functioning perfectly so the cow's milk protein can not be processed properly in the body. As a result, the child's immune system reacts to the cow's milk protein. Other precipitating factors are family history. If a parent has milk allergy, their baby will be at high risk of sufferig from milk allergy too. Cow's milk allergy symptoms are varied, including reaction to the skin (reddish and itchy), reaction in the gastrointestinal system (ranging from vomiting to diarrhea), and reaction on the lungs of children often in the form of coughing, could and asthma. On the other hand, breast-feeding is the best nutrition for infants because it positively affects their immune system. But if breast-feeding is not possible or is not adequate, parents could use a milk substitute made out of vegetable oils. Another alternative is by feeding infants with hypoallergenic milk, such as extensively hydrolyzed milk and amino acid formula milk

I'm not allergic to milk, but I am lactose intolerant. A really good dairy milk substitute is almond milk. It's lactose free and soy free. I never was a big fan of soy milk, but I drink vanilla almond milk all the time. My sister drinks a brand of milk called Lactaid which is still milk (so it would be bad for someone allergic to milk still) but is lactose free. I can't seem to get her to try almond milk, even though I think it tastes eons better than her milk.

It's a milk substitute like soy milk, but it doesn't taste like soy milk. It tastes like milk but kinda nutty, which I think improves the taste. When someone is lactose intolerant, it's a digestive-system reaction like constipation, bad gas, diarrhea, etc. A milk allergy will lead to an immune system reaction like rash, hives, itch, and in extreme cases the throat swelling up (anaphylactic shock) which can be fatal if not immediately treated. Some people get milk allergy and lactose intolerance mixed up.

None of my kids were allergic to cow's milk, fortunately. My oldest does like soy milk though. You have provided a good explanation of the problem.

An allergy to milk can also cause a horrible, red diaper rash...almost like a burn with blisters. With a milk allergy also, there are other things that you cold substitute if nothing else works such as goats milk or soy milk with a vitamin supplement. A friend of mine had a son that was deathly allergic to any kind of milk and would eat his breakfast cereal with orange juice. In any case it is always good to check with the Dr. for solid, sound advice.
