Have you ever been dove hunting?

I am working on an article for one of my blogs about dove hunting, specifically dove hunting in Argentina. Working on the blog post has my thoughts wandering and wondering. My experience with dove hunting is a bit limited, mostly to a time when I lived in the country and had an abundance of dove and other wildlife right in my back yard. I got pretty good at hunting for dinner a couple of times a month right from the back door of the house. Yes, I always eat the animals I kill, otherwise I would let them live. My favorite recipe for dove is grilled dove breast shish kebobs, alternating dove breasts between fresh fruit and vegetable chunks on a skewer. Have you ever gone dove hunting? If so, where? And do you have a dove recipe to share?

I don't hunt at all. A man at church gave us a couple of doves that he cleaned after a hunting trip. He told us how to fix them and I did......but we were all too chicken to try them! The cats sure loved them though! He gave us something else that day with the dove....duck maybe? He recently gave us venison and Steve smoked it today....guess what, once again we didn't even try it! The only thing he has ever given us that we actually ate was a bunch of fish he had caught and cleaned. I'm not too adventurous with foods not bought at the grocery store. Boy, would we be in sad shape if it ever came down to hunted meat being the only meat we had! Marsha

Oh my! How I wish I lived close, Marsha, I would have loved all that fresh game. Thankfully, I have a few who keep me in deer meat, but I honestly prefer small game food.

I don't know about dove hunting... I ate fried dove several times when I was a kid, but I don't think I would ever eat them again. It's a pity to hunt dove...

I have not had dove fried, only grilled or stewed/roasted. I can understand your taking pity on the doves. Thank you for commenting.

It would be interesting to know where you are from and if indeed dove hunting is not legal where you live. Here in Ohio (US) dove season opens September 1st. There are special migratory bird regulations.

Sorry to say that I've never had dove before, though I've tasted crow, pheasant, duck, goose, grouse, woodcock, and maybe a few others I can't remember right now. Your recipe sounds delish though! :-)

GDTimothy, you are making me hungry and have me reminiscing years gone by of momma roasting duck over an open fire. She did same with raccoon. I guess one of the plusses to growing up in the country and being poor, I got to taste good game meats that many have not had the opportunity afforded them. Yes, there seem to be quite a few places that do not permit dove hunting. Seems though, like you say, they are in abundance.

I forgot to add that doves are still a protected species up here in Western NY as far as I know, so we can't hunt them. But there appears to be no shortage of them here since we see them everywhere we go.
