He bought some food... yayyyy!

We've been without food for a few days.. I don't mean that we were starving, but we were out of everything. I made pancakes out of a cake mix and what little bit of flour I had left and that is what my daughter and I ate today. There was nothing else in the house. It's my job to buy food for the family each month, but it always takes more than the $500 that I have saved out for food each month.. it usually runs about $700 or more a month.. and that counts all the dog food, and non food items like toilet paper that isn't cheap, laundry detergent that is $14 a bottle... and stuff. They shop at one of the most expensive stores instead of Walmart.. but even walmart is expensive nowadays. Anyway I had no money and we have 9 days till I get paid.. so finally he got some food to see us through... not enough to last but he did get some ramen noodles that will fill in and maybe will get us over the 9 day span until I get paid. I want to shop at Save a Lot but SIL doesn't like the food there and says its nasty. Grrr! I can't be spending $700 on food anymore.. because $200 will be going for my part of the rent... so they will have to live on $500 and that's it from me. Before you ask, SIL pays all the other bills like power and gas and tv and stuff. I am on SS and can only buy the food and can barely pay my own bills. Your thoughts?

That sounds like a plan, PQ. here there is only two of us but we have to get by on $300.00 a month with all medicines that we have to have each month. We go fishing and hunting to help supplement our protein intake but other than that we are doing ok.

I'm oing to give S the money and if it won't last it is on his shoulders and not mine. I'm tired of getting yelled at about letting the family down by not knowing how to shop according to him. He's not going to get $700 from me anymore. They won't be using my bank card where they can go over the limit. I'll draw out the cash and let him have at it.

I don't spend anywhere near $700/month on food. In fact, I don't spend anywhere near $400/month. Mind you, there are only the two of us but that sounds like a lot of money for food to me. We don't eat "high off the hog" but we do have meat every night and usually some rice, sometimes veggies or potatoes or salad. We also have 3 cats so need cat litter, cat food etc. We do pick up a lot of stuff at Wal-mart but get all of our meat from a local delicatessen. It may be a bit more expensive than Wal-mart or the grocery store meat but we think it's worth it.

It's ridiculous here in GA. Even Walmart is expensive. I will have to cut it down yo about $400 a month so the fa Ily will be getting lots if ramen noodles. There are 3 adults here. They but from Ingles which is quite high but he gets a discount on gasoline so he thinks it is worth it. We don't use sugar for tea. Splenda is neatly $8 a bag here. Fresh fruit is beyond what I can pay. Another thing, SIL doesn't want to eat stuff I cook. He is very bland in his tastes. If he wants me to cook chili or spaghetti he will ask. Otherwise he wants canned ravioli or Brunswick stew or beef stew in a can. That's all expensive too. Nearly $4 a can for the brand he likes. I told them when we move things have got to change.

Yes, buying prepared and canned foods can be expensive and besides, it's not all that healthy. However if that's what he likes to eat, he's gotta pay the price. It's really difficult to buy groceries when someone is a fussy eater. My ex-husband was like that. Would only eat certain foods, no vegetable, no salads, liked the canned stuff as well. Not good for the budget.

You said you go through two bottles of Tide every month?? That's a LOT of detergent. Did you know that for most loads of laundry you don't need the full measure? About a half to two thirds is plenty. Most people's clothes have detergent in them when they come out of the dryer because they've used too much and it didn't all rinse out. I know you didn't ask, but frugal living is my thing and I just have to spout off now and then. If I were you and you actually do the shopping, I'd buy cheap food anyway. Ramen noodles are a good example, but there are a lot of inexpensive meals like beans and cheaper cuts of meat to be boiled or made into a pot roast type of meal. Plenty of potatoes and rice and so on to help balance the pricey snacks and drinks. Pick up generic brands and hide them if you have to. I know a woman who saved a box from a brand name cereal and refilled it with generic for months and no one knew the difference. $700 a month is an awful grocery bill to pay, even if it includes dog food. If you give them money and they do the shopping, I'd let them learn on their own. Just give them the money and say "I don't have any more, so that will have to last." You have to pay your own bills and buy things you need. Don't short yourself there because they won't or don't know how to cut back on things.

If they do the shopping, then if I were you, I'd give them the $500 and tell them you didn't have any more, period. If he wants to blow it on canned and frozen junk, he would have to come up with the money to buy food until you get paid again. But that's what happened this time, right? Just don't give him more than the $500. You need money for yourself, too.

I used to do the shopping and because I ran out of money before we ran out of month they said they would do the shopping. I shopped month before last and spent $370 and he said I didn't buy anything. I buy healthy food and they don't want it. He likes canned ravioli and pork and beans and those terrible hamburger patties that are flash frozen. even when I buy the crap they like it will run out. He says he doesn't want sh!t that he doesn't like shoved in his face. We wash in cold water. I don't know about detergent remaining in clothes. I only wash my own clothes. My daughter washes the rest. I use the recommended amount. I'm sure my daughter does too. He went shopping last night and came home with bananas, ramen noodles, banquet meals that are one serving, and canned ravioli. That's it but it will hopefully last us till I get paid. They won't let me shop anymore. They blame me when it doesn't last. It takes the heat off me when they shop and it doesn't last. I will use less detergent when I do my laundry from now on.

That just sounds like an outrageous amount to spend on food. We are a family of four and spend around 300 a month on food, this includes if we eat out. I get the flyer for our grocery store and match coupons to sale items. I cook by what is on sale and stock up on things that are on sale and I have coupons for. Our laundry detergent and toilet paper I usually go to Target. So when they are on sale, I have a coupon most of the time and than usually Target does the $5 gift card when you buy certain items and certain amounts. Giving me the gift card to use on my next purchase. Im definatly not a coupon queen, but Im just starting out. My biggest savings was 61%. I know there are some people who do better, but the goal is to only buy on sale, not buying a ton of prepackaged food, cook mostly from scratch. We eat healthy. Every Friday is our pizza night and movie night so I buy the frozen pizzas when they are on sale and just keep stocked up. SOmething to look into because 500-700 a month on food is expensive.

I don't know where you live but food is expensive. $300 barely lasts us 2 weeks. A big pack of double roll Charmin toilet paper is $18 and that doesn't last a month either. Walmart is even very expensive. We can't stock up on things because it takes so much and we run out. I can't find enough coupons to make a big difference. I've tried it and certainly can't do like those cuponners on TV. My family wants those prepackaged foods that are like a dollar each... you add bread to it and a veggie and you have a meal. They don't want me to cook.. the only time I cook is when they want me to. I have cooked just for myself because they won't eat it. I'd end up freezing stuff to eat later because they won't eat what I cook. It would be different if I had kids and they had to eat what I cooked. I'm a good cook, I think... but my SIL is very picky.

Ok, here is what I do and maybe it will help with cutting down on the grocery bill. Take some time and create a grocery list and all of the things your family like and then go back and look at what will last you longer and what is it that you cantake and make multiple meals out of . Then seperate the two and then get you some coupons from either the internet or from the local paper and it will help to cut down on prices. Another thing I do is match prices with certain stores like walmart and if they are cheaper than others stores then redeem coupons with them. Hope this helps.

I hope we can start doing something like that. SIL doesn't like everything we like. If I make meatloaf or lasagna he will eat. But he would rather just eat 2 cans of ravioli. If I buy healthy food he says I didn't buy anything. He is very fussy.

hi dear PQ I know two of the three dogs will go to a new home now as you got to move. But still I dont understand why you are expected to pay dog food for your daughers and SILs dogs. They are not your pets so they would be the ones to feed their own pets and dont dump the costs of pet food on you. So your bills will be a bit less with only one dog left in the household now. I guess they will start wailing and complaining as their favorite junk is no more in freezer fridge and pantry when you moved now but thats their problem. If they dont want to have what you are buying let them go to McD or elsewhere.

Hi RitterSport! Things are a changing for sure. For the better, I'd say. The pets I consider family pets since I'm still part of the family. But there won't be the same amount of money available for food. This means he can't go to his favorite grocery store. We will have to shop doll general store and walmart. I have eaten a lot less today because I've been so busy. I had 2 pieces of sausage and one egg and 1 toast this morning. I had a baked potato for lunch. And a frozen entree for supper and a slice of bread. I may have a veggie later this evening if I'm hungry. Oh and I had a glass of milk.

To me, Ramen noodles are nasty. It is a matter of opinion. If you could get a Sam's Membership it would certainly save on laundry products and paper goods if nothing else. Maybe make menus, grow a garden at the new house.

Ramen Noodles come in a styrofoam cup with some dried veggies, meat, seasonings and you can make a soup in a cup. If you get them that way, they are about a dollar. You also can get them in a solid brick, no veggies, no dried meat, but salt and lots of seasonings, put it in boiling water for three minutes. One packet makes two servings of curly white round noodles. You add whatever you like to it. I do not know Mr. Noodle. My first hubby was served them in Japan. For a fun dinner I would poach a couple of eggs in it until done, add thinly sliced ham and green onions with tops still on. They can be good with meat or tofu and veggies added. Most people eat the whole package, at least I did when I was making them on my own. They are high in calories and coated in a waxy fatty substance, and are full of MSG and other preservatives.

A couple of things...pay for TV? What's that about? (Not being nosey but we have free to air here and it costs nothing except for the power). The cake mix is another unnecessary item for me. I don't need that stuff, it's bad for me when I'm trying to lose weight, quite expensive and also a more processed food item than what I need when I'm trying to eat healthily. I buy pretty basic foods and high priced items like coffee I only buy on special, then I load up with a couple of jars at least and I save heaps. There's always a little in the kitty for this type of purchase because I only spend what I need rather than spending my entire income each month. The balance accumulates and I have an emergency fund and a little bit more. As for the laundry detergent...wow. I use a powder I buy in bulk in a big bucket. It costs me $40 for a really good brand and lasted me about 2 years and that's even giving some to my friend every now and then to help out. I buy it from the farm centre but it is readily available at such places. You are certainly doing it tough to maintain a house, feed a dog as well as 3 adults on $500 a month. It costs me about $260 - $300 to feed 2 goats, 4 dogs and a cat, maintain my home and feed me as well. Fuel costs, general running and maintaining a car is becoming a real problem here. I find if I buy small amounts of bulk when I can to keep my food cupboard stocked and I also buy the dry pet foods in bulk,,,a little bit goes a really long way. Not needing to buy those large items each week is great too. I'm pretty lucky too because I own my home so I don't pay rent and living in such a remote area means low rates.

Do you all have Direct TV in Austrailia? Back in the old days we could get free TV. Not anymore. I think you can buy a converter box to convert analog tv into digital format. I don't know how that works. I just know that tv with an antenna or rabbit ears doesn't work anymore, and even when it did it didn't give us a clear picture where we lived for the last 4 years. We used Direct TV because it had better service than Dish Network. The cake mix I mentioned only cost about 25 cents. It is made by the Jiffy corn bread people. Jiffy is my favorite cornbread. Gasoline is almost $4 a gallon here. It takes a king's ransom to keep gas in both cars. My SIL fills up both cars every 2 weeks and drives them to work. When one car is nearly empty he takes the other one. There is always enough gas left in the car left here if my daughter or I need to go somewhere. That's great for your laundry detergent. At the grocery store a bucket if Tide liquid is $14 and it takes 2 of them to last a month. I don't use powder because it doesn't sessions well in cold water. We only wash in cold water.

here in Canada, i find Walmart pretty expensive for food. what i do is plan out my meals for the week and shop accordingly (we take my inlaws shopping each week). you should buy what you want and then let them deal with it. however, i have been in your position and fortunately, we have a big freezer that is pretty stocked, so i can usually find something.

I wsh we could do that but they like those single serve meals that you microwave. SIL likes canned ravioli and crap like that. I lime it too but not as a steady diet. I've tried to get him on board about making menus but he never participates. He says he doesn't know what he wants to eat until he's hungry for something.

Why is it that you pay for all the food do they cover other things too? (just curious) If things like TP, soap and the non food type items are taken out of the food bills then it will add up even faster. I'd be tempted to make a non food items on a separate bill. Or if certain people insist on shopping at more expensive stores then maybe the difference needs to be kicked in.

that seems to be the biggest arguement with family and room mates. i dont know how some do it. here we have 5 adults. everything, mortgage, food, utilities all split 4 ways. actually thats another discussion on whether its fair to count my daughter AND her bf as one share. we had words about that when my youngest moved in. making him pay a fourth when we were only spliting it 3rds before. but i lost the arguement as usual. so, anyway, you might want to figure if that would be a better deal. spliting it 3 ways.

I wouldn't be able to afford it and pay my part to SIL's mom for rent. The rent is split. Bur it wouldn't work wiring all the other expenses of the house. Like cutting the food into halves because he is the only one working and everything else won't work we have tried that. I carried my end but they didn't buy food when it was their turn. Or not enough food.

Our groceries cost us $700 per month also. We have me, my husband, 3 kids and my dog. I shop for laundry detergent, toilet paper and soap at family dollar. Food we go to Aldi's which is sooo much cheaper than walmart! I barely ever go to walmart, too expensive for us. If we shopped there it would cost way more than $700 a month! I would try to tell him you have only a certain amount and thats it. Im sorry that your living off ramen noodles, I hate those days. Ramen noodles are good once a while but not when thats all you have... I hope things get better for you!

I always shop at Wal-Mart and do a lot "price match" some of the checkers don't like it but I just remember which ones don't and go through a different line. Aldi's, save-a-lot and Mosiers are good places to shop and with the FDA guidelines that all store chains have to follow they are all good food.

I hope so too. It's going to be more stressful for me until my family makes do with what I have. He said he would shop at save a lot and walmart when we move because it is closer. I hope he sticks to that. We have discovered that the dollar general store is also oretty cheap on detergent and dog food. I hope things get better. I'm going to give him $500 a month and he is going to have to make it stretch. I am not going to have the extra money for food because one of my writing sources dried up. I'm not writing as much as I used to due to health problems. So it will be much tougher for me.

I would say Im paying for it so Ill shop where I want to shop. Thats a lot for 3 people (I think thats what you said before). I would look into using coupons and samples. I save a pretty penny on coupons and the US has a much better system than here in Canada. I try to save more on items I know I need especially cat food, litter, and so on. Im trying to push my food until the 7th of June when I get paid. I do have food kicking around and trying to use it up.

We feed 3 dogs too. Dog food is expensive. We also get lits if soda and stuff. It all adds up. The prices are ridiculous. Tide without scent is over $14 and it takes 2 bottles to last a month. Our nacho meal that we make costs about $20 to make it. There is leftovers fir the next day so that's not too bad. We use 2 bags of nacho chips and they are $2 a bag here. Plus we have to pay 6% tax on food.

I bet you're not a fan of Man v Food. Saw it for the first time the other night and the steaks on offer could feed two families for a week. Each steak weighed nearly 2 stone. I know it's "entertainment" but someone is gonna have a heart attack on that show. Sorry I went off topic but not everyone in the US (and here, we're not immune) can buy food like I've mentioned above. I prefer the way you live to be honest and I hope that doesn't sound patronising because it wasn't meant to be.
