Yes Mac OS can be infected via virus or malware or malicious code files intended for Mac OS only. But not as seriously as with other Operating System (like MS Windows and Linux) that can cripple down permanently halting or destroying the whole operating system and file structures.
By the way I don't have any antivirus applications installed on my Mac. I just only keeps on having a daily updates from Apple.
An Apple daily updates can keep out your Mac Operating System from virus, malwares, trojans, and malicious code files.

Macintosh is not as vulnerable as Windows but Macintosh can be hacked. A trojan was recently made for Macintosh, here is the link http://threatpost.com/en_us/blogs/flashback-mac-trojan-hits-more-500k-machines-040512.

The reason why there are a few rare viruses for an Apple system is that its not commonly used so most hackers doesn't bother generating one however, there are strands that are specially made for Apple systems including the Macbook. Viruses and trojans for Macbook do exist and there were cases of compromises wherein the Macbook was taken over using a Trojan. We can't let our guards down only because its rare, viruses and trojans for the Macbook is out there somewhere waiting for an open system to infect.

It is quite difficult to infect the Mac OS X as it has been developed to be resistant to viruses, Trojans and malware. This is one of the reasons why the Mac is more expensive than other computers but the hackers nowadays have become quite good at developing the online threats. Another layer of virus protection won't hurt like the Mackeeper.
