Inside the CPU cabinet consists of motherboard, RAM (or memory), processor (pentium/athlon), a fan for the processor, hard disk (for storing data), a dvd/bluray/cd drive/writer and of course an SMPS which converts AC to DC current for CPU parts.
RAM which is know as memory, is the only thing which the processor communicates, to communicate to the hard disk the processor tell ram and ram communicates to them. When you boot windows/linux/macintosh the necessary files to run the computer is loaded in ram.
An OS (windows/linux/macintosh) displays texts which are human readable form, a computer can communicate only in 0 and 1, the OS displays what computer tells and when we command the OS tell the computer to do certain things.
Sometime we also add graphics card to the mother board to meet the requirements for the games or software to used to make animation. It's because of the graphics card we get the display in the monitor, nowadays a graphics card in build in motherboard which is sufficient for normal use, additional graphics is only used if necessary ...
RAM and processor is directly connected to motherboard, we can remove it and fix new ones also, hard disk and dvd/bluray/cd drive is connected through a cable. RAM and processor take power supply directly from motherboard, hard disk and dvd/bluray/cd drive require a separate electric supply cable from SMPS.
I hope I have covered necessary things ....

but there is two type of cpu component.
ALU= arithmetic logic unit. that performs arithmetic and logical operations
CU = extracts intructions from the memory and decodes and exexutes them

Hi full,
Some people mistakenly call the enclosure beside the computer monitor as the CPU. Actually, like they say, the CPU or Central Processing Unit is the chip that processes the I/O data that runs through the whole system.
I learned in my computer programming class that the black box is technically called the "system unit" that contains the mainboard, with its attachments such as the HDD, the CPU, the PSU, VGA card, LAN card, sound card and the in-out connections to the keyboard, mouse, and FDD via USB or PS2 ports.

hi you say CPU. is a central processing unit of the computer. CPU is one of the parts of a system unit. actually you'd like to know that is the parts of a system unit/computer.
this is the main parts of a computer/system unit
1. first is the brain and main parts: the CPU
2. second is the RAM to boot the system, boot is likely to start the system.
3. 3rd is the Video card= to have a display of your system
4. next is Hard Disk= where all your documents, important files, specially you operating system is installed. this is the storage device of the system
5 last is the Motherboard which is from the first up to 4th parts is inserted. handling all the parts 1-4.
