Hello Friends
This question is going in my mind since long. We having many good browsers for surfing internet like Firefox, Chrome and opera. They are giving totally free service to the people. We just need download it and can start working on it.
So I am wonder what they are getting from it?? I am saying in terms of earning.
I have seen some free software, let's talk about free antiviurs. They are also giving free software but they also having paid version with more features so that interested users can purchase paid version for more security...... But in browser they don't having any such option.
Let's talk about another free service, mail(like yahoo mail), but they are earning through advertising...... But in browser they are not earning through advertising also.
So I wonder what they are getting from it? Any idea? Don't laugh there is simple answer behind it..

Did you see the adverts appearing on them? Did you notice the number of other methods they can earn from those browsers. Adverts are the main source of online activities and how else would they make you interested to visit on their pages. Have you seen the advert on the mail matches the topic/subject of the mail you were reading? Please do not ask the same question about this site as to why or where do they pay you for? How do the manage to earn to pay you just for writing here? Cheers...

Browsers has no earning opportunities for user's as far I know! I do know with free version, we're encourage to install search toobar but still giving us a choice to install. If we install toolbar and search through, the company where browser come from earn through searches we do. That's the plain thruth as far I know!

Hey mate, you stole the question right under my nose, so I cannot start any such discussion which I was hoping to start tonight. Anyways, I have many friends who are software engineers as I am one myself. So, I always asked many of them - who were my seniors and well settled in the business around 8 to 10 years ago. But none of them could give me any satisfactory answer. I mean, they had learnt and expanded their knowledge only for themselves and were not picking up things as a hobby. Well, I can't say anything more about it as they are free to explore more in their field or not. But I think, I have got an answer to my question through this discussion.

Yes friend, it would be good otherwise, I will be running out of ideas Right. The second box as you mentioned has some worthwhile information. I have to go through the links a bit more in detail. I will do that tonight as I have sometime on my hands. In the meantime, thanks for removing my doubts.

Hi bro
In case you happen to visit any of these sites of browser developers, they have a "donat" and "contribute" buttons. This is from where they make some money.
For the browsers you mention, most of them are opensource and as stine mentioned on #1, the programmers are derviatives from Microsoft. Opensource mostly comes free so these programmers do not make money selling the browsers. They are more into getting recognized for their work - and some of them use this recognition to make money from other services and products - sometimes like even paid add ons for the browsers

Actually I didn't know about this information.. But after reading it in box 2 I completely know about it.
I am confused about this thing which sunil added in above comment...
Suppose you are working on chrome and they are running adverts of different companies. Who is getting paid for them.
If this thing is like you mentioned above, then it is completely right and okay.. If he is saying in different terms, then I would like to hear about it more.

The Internet IS NOT 'for money!' The Internet is for FUN! Web-browsers are tools for making 'fun on the Internet' easier to access. If I wrote a web-browsing program, it would be free for me; why not make it free for all to whom I can give it?

I read the second response-thread, and the truth remains: the Internet is FOR FUN. People get on the Internet FOR FUN. (Yes, some get on for money; but--if they can get enough money somewhere else that's more FUN--they'll do that more even if they don't get as much money!)
A browsing-program is more-successful (used by more people, and thus more-attractive to sponsors) if its users have more FUN!

Hi anand, I thought this long before, how come some would give free in this internet world. I got some answers by my thinking itself. (after reading sid and Suny comment I got cleared. But some of my points here). When some product in this world either in real world or in internet world gets popular it gets more investors and they tend to invest their money for that particular product or for their future one. It is the way they earn there and gives us that product as free.

So do you want us all now to pay for using browsers as well as pay for Gmail and yahoo mail? I think there are paid browsers. Also you have to consider that when you join your provider, you are paying so much a month. Paying for a browser and in fact all browsers would mean that the internet would be restricted as it was in the past to university students and those who make more then all of us and we all do not use free internet cafes. I think that the browsers are enabling us to find out information that we have had to get previous through buying newspapers, going to libraries, listening to radio or tv.
