Do you feel comfortable to leave a message to an answering machine?

Here the answering machine is not so common. Usually the big companies will have this service only. Most of the people don't like leaving a message to an answering machine because it seems silly to speak by yourself only But I will leave a message because the phone is already charged me and it is much more stupid no to say something and then hand up the phone

The ONLY time I don't leave a message is on a cell phone's voice mail and that is because I know how difficult it is to retrieve messages, (or at least my husband says it is), but if it is important I will.
Now home answering machines, that is a total different story and I HATE it when someone calls and not leave a message. My son's friend does that and it annoys me and I find it rude..
So when I have no messages, yet my phone says I have so many missed calls, I have to scroll through the numbers, call them back, (and sometimes I don't recognize the number) only to see it was one of his friends who didn't feel the need to leave a message..What's worse is they call multiple times trying to reach my son when if they JUST leave ONE message, then all they'd have to do is wait and not return another phone call.

Oh, one more thing. You ARE NOT talking to yourself, you are leaving a message for whomever you are calling. Same with what I am doing now, if you are not online when I type this, then I am leaving a message, does that mean I am typing this to myself? NO!!!

Oh I don't miss the calls, unless it is a private number, it shows up and I can call back..But you want to know what is really annoying? When I can't get to the phone on time and they hang up right when I pick up the phone. If a message was being recorded, I could pick up and talk to whoever called, instead I have to scroll through to see who called and call them back..

I wouldn't say it's popular, it's just been around a long time!

The very first time that i left a message to an answerting machine i felt kind of awkward about it. It's like talking to someone and not knowing if they are really listening to you or not. Now I have left tons of messages on answering machines it is second nature to me now. It doesn't bother to leave a message or talk to the real thing.

Well, I personally have never had the opportunity to ask questions to an answering machine, I do not know exactly what kind of device you refer. However I see that you put a phone as an icon in your discussion, I think you're referring to telephone calls where there is not a human operator to answer, but rather a machine programmed to answer at your requests. This question can only press the corresponding button of the telephone keypad. I do not find there is nothing absurd, however, if I had to choose, I'd prefer to talk to a human operator. But what can you do, too, is part of the development of technology so as to create almost "thinking machines", and we must not get up to used them.

My best friend phone has it, her phone came from her sister who lives in the US. I always leave a message for her if she was on her store and the phone was on her house 10 steps away.

Very few people whom i know have an answering machine facility.I generally do not make many calls but in case i make one and find that a neutral voice is answering the phone i instantly disconnect the phone without leaving my name or message.Unless its an emergency,i prefer to talk directly to the person whom i want to speak to.

Youless, most big companies in here usually use answering machine when their customer service executives are not free to answer the line. I usually would prefer to leave a message for them to call me back. I am happy that usually i will get a call back, when i leave my message. But, there are some companies that i am not sure why they didn't call me back although i had left my message with them. I felt sad seeing those companies executives are not replying to the message which are left at their answering machine.

If they do decide to have an answering machine, I'll leave a nice message asking them to call me. Of course, there are times where people don't really have an answering machine and thus the phone call is wasted. You can't let them know you call, you can just call them back a couple of hours later. As you sit there feeling like a fool as the phone rings.
But if you made the call and you can leave a message, you might as well say something, to tell them to call you back. Of course, the real fun is when you start playing phone tag, where you keep missing each other and keep having to leave messages. Eventually if the planets align right up, we might be able to talk with each other before too long. But still, you might leave a message because people will think that you care to talk to them.

It sucks since they charge once the answering machine beeps. I only leave a message to say that for the person to call me back since I have something to say. I don't normally leave any message other than that. Just my name and the words call me back ASAP.

I don't think there are much answering machines left over. If companies have one it's only to tell you when they are closed or which (next) number you can call.
The rest of the "answering machines" are the private voicemails. I don't like to leave a message. Why should I? I only call to those I know they recognize my number. If I really want to leave a message I send an e-mail or sms. I don't think many people are still making phone calls over here.

Initially, I'm a bit uncomfortable in making those voice mails. But as time goes by, as an Asian who are not used to that process, I struggled at first, but now, I'm a pro when it comes to voice mails. It really helps to leave your messages especially when they are an important ones that needs a call back.

If the call is important, I will leave a message.

I usually don't leave messages in the answering machine. When I do it would really be important that the person pick up the phone and get back to me asap. Usually When I am reverted to an answering machine, i would be hanging up the phone already. =)

What company are you calling? If it is a doctor's office or something like that then you should leave a message. I don't think it is difficult to do this. Ofcourse I have had more that thirty years worth of experience. If you come up against a answering machine I would leave my name, reason for the call and a number where they can call you back. I would keep this in mind when you are making a phone call just in case you have to leave such a message.

Haha, yeah I have doubts on that as well... Being uncomfortable leaving a message on phone. Well, I did tried to dial numbers which has "leave message after the beep" mode. But I never tried leaving a message. I guess my message needed to be directed and not to be recorded first.
But if it is really important and urgent matter, of course, I have to leave a message. Well, I haven't had experienced paying first before making a message, so mostly I don't leave a message after the...toot toot...

For most messages, I don't mind talking on a machine. But there are times -- when either the subject matter is rather delicate, or when someone doesn't need to hear the news from an answering machine, or if I am upset and know I may regret what I say -- that I refrain from leaving a message. When possible, I will go see the person in person, or, if I have to, I will wait for another time to call and speak with the person rather than leaving a message.
