I'm Strangely Euphoric After Finding Two Yolks In One Egg - Twice!

John has recently started buying Very Large Free Range Eggs from Morrisons (and he can buy them from ASDA over the road as they have them too) and I love them in baking and such like. However, in my last two eggs I've used (for different things) I've found two yolks in each egg. These are from the same batch of six and the way it's going it will turn into a batch of 12 lol. It's like getting double for the money isn't it but two yolks are affecting my flapjack currently baking in the oven. It's taking longer than usual. It must be the two egg yolks as I've made this recipe many times before without any problems. If this happens again is there a way of retrieving the second yolk once it's fallen into the mixture?

If you broke the eggs into a cup rather than directly into the mixture it would be possible to do a bit of jiggery pokery with a couple of cups to separate one egg yolk. It's a good habit anyway, just in case you get an egg which is bad. I love double yokers! It's just like finding a four leafed clover. I know it's just superstition but it doesn't stop me from getting a smile on my face :-) enjoy your extra rich flapjacks!

Are double-yolkers lucky? I do hope so as I've had two of them so far out of this batch of six. I do possess an egg separator that I haven't actually used yet. It may come in useful to take out the extra egg yolk in a spare bowl, rather than bung it all in like I usually do! The extra rich flapjacks are now working on my bowel movements. Too much information I know but that's porridge oats for you..oh, not forgetting the 100g (too many in hindsight) chocolate chips! They're like gooey cereal bars rather than flapjack!

If you needed to you could also just scramble up the yolks with a fork then pour half of it into the pan or mixture and not the other half. I think it would be really neat to have an egg seperator I've never even seen one and cannot imagine how it would work. I used to have a really horrible time when I was would eat eggs or even egg noodles. I would be sick to my stomach and have the worst diaherra for hours. I still get very gassy from them but after getting more used to them the past few years my body seems to have accepted them better.

It's easy enough to separate an egg yolk from the white with a couple of cups, pouring gently from one to the other. I don't know how an egg separator works, but it sounds like one of those gadgets for the sake of gadgets.

In our area, there is a poultry farm that actually sells egg that are guaranteed to have two egg yolks inside. I think there is a way to alter the natural production and literally produce this kind of products. If I am not mistaken, they mix something on the food of the chicken. Though it coukd also hspoen naturally on some eggs.

Well, it's the first time it has happened with this particular brand of egg so I guess (and I am hoping) that it was more natural than produced. Awesome eggs too..and free range of course.

I recall reading that before supermarkets took over in egg sales, that grocers would separate out those "Double Yolkers" so you could buy them intentionally if you wanted to use some..but sorry, can't come up with a solution to an extra yolk going into the mixture you're making!..Maybe just double up on the recipe?

Haha! Never thought of that, you could be onto something there. The flapjack is OK now..bit too sweet but at least I won't have any problems going to the toilet anytime soon.

This is a genetic thing. In several countries, you can buy eggs that are guaranteed to have two yolks. The yolks are generally a little smaller than usual but they taste the same. I don't know if they are actually genetically modified, but somehow I don't think they are natural. I tend to avoid them. Seperating two yolks? Yes, that's a new trick to learn!

I agree, it really is like getting two eggs for the price of one. I guess that must have been a pleasant surprise. As for how to get the yolk out i suggest you should try breaking the egg in an empty bowl first and then use a spoon to take the extra yolk out.

If it happens again I shall take a photograph. The last two eggs it happened with..well, their yolks were massive because the eggs were the very large ones to start with. I guess I have a better chance of getting double yolks in the bigger eggs, although it's the first time it has happened with these particular eggs. We usually have the medium ones.

I wonder what causes some eggs to have more then one yolk in them. Hens lay eggs even if they arent around a male so the eggs arent fertilized so it cant be twins. I am guessing it is just something flukey such as things women have happen like releasing two eggs in a month sometimes.

I found the following on www.broadlandeggs.co.uk. Double-yolkers Double-yolkers are created when a hen releases two yolks at the same time. This is quite common in young hens whose cycles may not be perfectly synchronised. Older hens will sometimes produce a double-yolker in an Extra Large egg. Occasionally a hen will produce double-yolker eggs throughout her egg-laying career. It is rare, but not unusual, for a young hen to produce an egg with no yolk at all!

Janey, in fact this is the first time i heard 2 eggs with two yolks in each egg. I ever heard my friend who saw an egg with two yolks. I think you must be a very lucky person to have found this special eggs. As for myself, i haven't got the opportunity to see an egg with two yolks. Don't worry about the two yolks, you can always use an egg separator, to separate the yolk, to make your baking a success.

I am working with a Broiler Integrator Company and one of our product is Egg. Based on what I know, you can make the yolk double in each. Our nutritionist can do that and he can also formulates feeds so that the egg yolk will have a darker color.

its a flapjack a pancake? I thought they were made ona griddle or ina pan. Anyway maybe the double yolk is counted as 2 eggs. Try adding more of the other ingredients.
