It doesn't have to be Facebook. The BBC has its own CBBC channel for youngsters and even that has its own social networking site aimed at toddlers because children as young as five have their own laptops. Really? No wonder face-to-face communication is becoming a thing of the past..and that's just the adults!!
The following article (I find) very interesting as I have always hated Facebook and will continue to do so..and even if I had a gun to my head I will never join it.
So there!

.... social... networking... aimed... at... TODDLERS?!?!?!?
That's it. We're doomed. Get your apocalypse gear ready, the world is ending.
Okay, that article does seem quite a bit too doom and gloom, but there is evidence to suggest that long hours spent on social networking websites is linked to an increased chance of depression. I do believe that as human beings, we're meant to know each other face to face. I don't like facebook, and I've since deleted mine because I really want to get back to interacting face to face.

Perhaps you did! Wish I'd had the sense to delete mine ages ago. I might have saved myself a few dozen hours and gotten some more real phone calls or visit time with my people.
It is easier to type then to speak, and I do believe we're losing that face-to-face communication. Facebook really is taking over people's lives in a bad way. It's good to see young people who still talk, but I see more and more young people who ignore each other and just type on their phones all the time.

Good for you. I, too, have deleted my Facebook account but - ironically enough, it was BEFORE it got way too popular for its own good. Perhaps I had a sixth sense about it..you know, taking over peoples' lives in a negative way?
It's so nice that a girl next door to Mum has her friend round (they're about 14). Mums says the pair of them are really quiet but communicate FACE-TO-FACE and it's amazing that this behaviour seems to be quite rare now. I reckon the girl's parents probably encourage her to mingle properly like this instead of chatting to her friend on Facebook. I mean, what's the point of that? It's actually stopping friends from meeting up. Far too easy to type than to speak.

The article is right about one thing though..how anti-social (young people especially) are becoming.

It all started with texting didn't it? Whenever I sent text messages I made a point of still using the full words rather than shortening them..not all but some. It's the same with Facebook and, more increasingly, Twitter. I don't have a Facebook account anymore and I've stopped using Twitter regularly as some sentences I've read don't make sense!

I did not read the article yet as I am short on time, but I do think Facebook is one of the worse things out there for young people. Many of them do not know how to use it responsibly and I have seen many relationships ruined because of it. I also see the good side of Facebook, as I have been able to catch up with friends I have not seen or heard from in years and in some cases we are talking about reunions and it meeting each others kids, etc. You have to make the extra effort to keep the face to face thing going or even telephone conversations but having all these resources and the sense to use them wisely can be a good thing for all. On the otherhand I do not endorse small children having social network accounts mainly because it keeps them indoors and not out playing. My 10 year old learned how to get on my Facebook and then she started staying on there more than me, and following the activities of one of our friends who LOVES to air her dirty laundry on there. I feel that's the worse abuse of Facebook, first because it's nobody's business and secodn because children can see it.

You've done a good job at giving us both the positives and negatives of Facebook and I thank you for that. It's such a shame that the younger kids, especially, are spending more and more time indoors and do you know that cases of rickets are increasing due to the fact that kids aren't getting enough Vitamin D from being outside..cereal makers have started adding more of it to their products. They shouldn't have to do this; the parents should be encouraging their children to get some fresh air once in a while.

It amazes me to learn that toddlers have their own laptops. It is hardly too much to say that computer was a wonderful invention that stood the whole world on its head.We can't appraise it too high. However if we must give a wide berth to computer from now on after reading this thrilling article that playing computer has lots of biological effects on us.I doubt if the writer of the article went too far.

I am not a doctor or biologist who can come up with health issues associated with using facebook. I need to know more about such claims from the article. One thing is sure though that when anything, including facebook, is used in a negative way, it always results to a lot of consequences. Mylot too is a form of a social networking site but when used properly, it can be beneficial. Facebook has its own benefits and disadvantages. It all boils down to how we use any thing that we have around us. Have a great and wonderful day ahead.

I agree with those sentiments. I used to use MyLot a lot more than I do now but I felt guilty about being on here for too long. It stopped me doing things.
The same goes for Facebook I should imagine (and I cancelled my account about 3 years ago) but the thing with Facebook is..it's so huge and literally millions of people are using it, all at the same time. Surely that can be addictive and actually stop people from going out and meeting the very friends they're..er..typing to.

This is quite scary but i do agree that it reduces face to face contact with other persons, there are an alarming number of people, teens, adults alike that rather be on facebook than do more with other outside activities..
that is why we stopped my daughter from using her facebook account, she has been addicted with it and glad stopped it just in time.

That is quite alarming..How technology is affecting, especially the children. Even i didn't have a computer until i was 13.. Parents should definitely read this so they can help their child before it is too late. Interacting with people is very important to form one's character too.

It is alarming, I agree although I don't have children so it's something that doesn't worry me on a personal level. However, it must be so hard to get kids to do anything BUT use their computers and I do know that some 2 year olds want (and get) iPads!

I do agree to some extent that social networking is changing us. The world is changing so much that when a group of friends go to hang out, everyone is either texting our on the internet with their smart phones etc. It is really sad that slowly face to face communication is dwindling.

That study is something new. Or perhaps it has already been there for long but it is only now that I've read of it. I'm not sure though if I should believe it or not. Cuddle chemical is a cute term though
Now, seriously, I also agree that children should not be exposed to the online world. There are so many risks out there, health may just be one of them. Simple times are still better

What a great line that is "Simple times are still better."
I couldn't agree more.

I tend to think that toddlers using social networking sites may become socially inept. Everybody needs to learn how to socialize face to face and acquire "people skills". This learning process starts at a very young age and one cannot learn social skills through a computer. I find it interesting that this article says that computers and social networking sites contribute to the isolation of people. In fact, I started a discussion a short while ago on that very topic. http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2653666.aspx

Mum told me that when she worked at her previous school (on dinners) she saw 5 year olds in corridors using computers. Granted, it was in an educational environment but some of them have to be literally prized away from them..in order to play outside. I should imagine they are like that at home too.

I disagree with that because the net have many bad stuff for the children and also we must extra control for their behavior on the internet...
