My splitting and joining software are old ones that I bought a long time ago and that I don't think are available now. A free one for resizing and reformatting is Any Video Converter which was free when I got it and probably still has a free version; it can be used to change just about any format such as mp4, mpg, etc. to some other format but I usually go to XviD. For joining and splitting do a search; there just might be free versions out there somewhere. Just virus check anything before executing the program.

Have you ever tried AVS video package, you might find all of them useful, especially you want to merge all 10 of those mp4 format videos. Also, have you ever considered using xilisoft video editing software, it is also useful to merge, split, or trim videos too. So, good luck. I hope those information can be useful for you.

Foe editing videos I use After effects where I can add lot of pure cinematic effects to my video just like Hollywood. The are lot of fetures like motion graphics, stp motion , green screen manipulations etc. The soft is quite bulky but very easy to operate. It might be little difficult in operation Adobe After Effects in begining but will be very easy as well as fun after a week.

i'm personally a big fan of Sony Vegas it's such a powerful yet simple to use editing software that can do so much. rendering time is quite fast and it's also very smooth to work with. video format options? it can render into almost all available formats out there..
i've been using Sony Vegas professionally and i would prefer it any time over Adobe Premiere
