Some research say that about 70% of the people have a fear in speaking in public. I can say that I belong to this group. Speaking in public is my weakest point and I have this kind of thinking with me during this training. In one of our sessions, we were informed that one of the skills that we should possess in order to become effective in our work is the skill in public speaking.
What am I doing here? There must be wrong on the process of selection. I thought to myself. But then, I realized that if I won't be able to pass this training, considering the time, effort and the money that I and the government had spent for me, everything will be gone to waste.
I made a decision, I must not think less of myself. I can do anything what others can do.
The day come for the test of courage. We will be made to answer a question. Impromptu. The first speaker was called, I listen intently on his speech while waiting for my turn. My heart is beating fast! My hands were cold and my knees were shaking! I'm trying to calm myself. I did not wait for long. My name was called after the 3rd speaker.
This is it! I picked my question and start organizing my thoughts. I delivered my topic in a form of a story, and ended it up with a joke. I got the attention of the audience. I made it, I thought to myself. I had overcome my fear. Not bad for a newbie.
Now, I am confident that I could be an effective public servant, not only because I can already speak in public, but because for whatever difficulties that I may encounter in the course of my duty, I am sure that I would be able to handle it effectively.

I understand you perfectly. I also have a problem with speaking in public. Actually I used to be a very shy person. I lived in a small town and after I went to college I started to crawl out of my shell and I began speaking more with people. I worked a summer abroad and that helped me even more. But speaking in public is still an issue. I didn't even like speaking in front of my classmates in school or college. I don't have a problem if I have to speak with a person or five, even if I don't know them, but 15-20 people is a little too much.
If I stop to think about it I don't really know what I fear. Maybe that people will laugh at me or thing: What's with this guy, what is he doing here ? It's not logical, well fear isn't really logical for most of the cases.
I have to work more on my public speaking problem and reading you topic gave me a little boost. I hope we'll both do better.
Take care.

Hi vertu! Thanks for sharing. We have a continuous training on public speaking. Different situation at a time. Sometimes we were made to speak with a prepared piece and we were allowed to use presentation guides. They will give feedback after our presentation. As to how we speak, we stand in front, do we have mannerisms that we have to reduce or completely remove, little by little, we could address these things that might ruin our presentation.
I know we can do it. We just have to believe in ourselves. Have a nice day!

Any fear we have is all part of being individual. The best part about all that is that all fears can be overcome, of only for a moment. Just keep going forward, and whether you conquer your fear or not, you will always be ypu.

The fears that I still carry until now is that I am still afraid in the dark and afraid of high buildings but my family especially my big sister always tell me that I need to be strong to release those fears in my mind. I need to conquer them especially I am becoming a grown-up and not a little girl anymore. In the past months, I tried to think that I am just imagining around... feels like it is just a little dream. I know that I can do it.

Like anybody else, we can also conquer our fear over anything. It's a state of mind. We might not be able to change the situations but surely, we can change the way we look at it. Have a nice day!

Thank you for sharing your opinion. Yes you are right I need to have more practice to smoothen out some flaws in the delivery of the topic. I would have to practice eye contact and control unnecessary body movements too. And of course the proper voice power. I have a long practice to make. Thank you joshua!
