I'm Drinking Less Alcohol But Eating More & Gaining Weight

This is so frustrating! At one time I would drink 2 cans of Holsten Pils a night, every night. About 18 months ago I told John that I wanted to drastically cut down (mainly for health reasons but for a healthier bank balance for him too) so now I drink 2 cans on Tuesday nights when John's out snookering and another 2 on Friday nights..well, 'cos it's Friday lol. We don't go on nights out so it's not as though I'm drinking socially as well. Anyway, as a consequence of all this I've noticed that I'm eating more. Also, I don't think baking sweet stuff every other day is doing me any favours either. I do have a Mirena Coil fitted that CAN cause weight gain but - honestly, I look pregnant (which I'm most definitely not by the way). My belly is so awful to look at and I cover it up too! This is what happens, any weight gain automatically goes onto my belly; it's always been the same. Even when I was a lot slimmer than I am now any weight gain would "find my belly" so to speak. When I was more active the same thing would happen; everywhere else toned to perfection but this little, protruding belly would always let me down! Unfortunately, when I'm at Mum's next week I won't be able to weigh myself as the battery has ran down in her weighing-scales, so I've no idea what my weight actually is. Do I go back on the Holsten Pils (where most of the sugar turns to alcohol and I eat less) or do I ditch the baking? Either way, I need to do SOMETHING.

I would try to cut on baking. It seems that you eat in part at least from anxiety. Why dont you seek help there so that a pill helps to control it? I gained 20 pounds when I quit smoking. I canĀ“t say my metabolism changed. What really happened was that I ate hard candy all day long.

Sweets are neat, but ditch that rather than drink more...

Eating fruit is better than "drinking" fruit - more fiber fewer calories - at least according to the roomie's docs...

Yes, this is true, Janey, and I believe that it must be that the stomach muscles weaken as one ages, because at my age, I am even having trouble with hernias around the bellybutton area, and it's probably due to the muscles getting weak, and I didn't cut down on strenuous work until it was too late! So now I have a pot belly and a hernia on my stomach muscles !

There's another option. You could chuck out the scales and just be happy! I think that if you've always had a tummy then you always will, and no amount of depriving yourself of the things you love it going to change that.

I could just bop 'til I dropped. I've always like bopping in my own home to music and I've a good excuse now - no neighbours on EITHER side!

well, This may help you for it has helped me a lot. I use to weigh 230lbs. I have started exerciseing ev ery day and now I am at 190lbs. I still have more weight to lose but I plan on still exersieing everyday. I have cut out drinking soda and now I only drink water unless I am working out. I really wanted to change for myself many people that had not seen me in sometime would always say. Are you pregnant?? This use to always upset me when people would ask this question.

Even when I rode my bike a lot to work and back (and beyond) my belly would stick out. Then I weighed around 11 stone and now I'm a stone heavier than that..over 12 years later. I've read that we gain at least 2 pounds in weight each year, the older we get. If I tried to reach the weight I was in my mid 20s i.e. 9 stone 4 pounds, my skin would stretch and I would look terrible..apparently..so 11 stone would probably be OK now for someone who is 46.
