Today I deleted phone numbers.

My cell phone had around 2000 numbers saved; they are numbers of my relatives, friends, students, institutions, temples etc , both from India and abroad; but today I deleted many.
The reason was simple, if I call number of a friend, with whom I talk regularly he/she is supposed to respond as; Hi Prof, but if the response is, hello, who is calling; it is evident that he/she has not saved your number.
Similarly if I send SMS there is no reply.
So why keep those numbers; if the numbers are there I get tempted to talk or at least send SMS.
I don’t like to talk to persons whose number is not saved in my cell phone.
Moreover I save numbers with actual names; when my Nokia phone rings, it announces that name.
How many numbers you saved, do you talk to them, SMS them?
Do you reply via SMS at least?
Do you receive calls from numbers that are not in your phone book and talk back?
Please share your experience if any and comment on this.
Thanks in advance.
Prof.Dr. B.Saraf. PhD 1st June 2012.

Storing and saving number of our family and friends in our cell phone is very nice feature available in mobile, we do not have to remember the number of person, we can search his/her name in our contact and we can call and message them easily.
In day to day life we exchange numbers with many people, sometime with people whom we just meet few times. In exchanging and saving numbers our phonebook/contact get flooded with numbers and contacts.
I also have so many numbers whom I do not call and who do not call me, these numbers includes few institutes, lecturers, few friends.
It really hurts when we call/message our friends and they ask "who is this", that time we really feel bad and we need to tell them about ourselves.

Nowdays people change number frequently that is one of the reason this situation arises. I am also one of those people who changes number frequently but now I have fixed my one number and I use other number for outgoing that time people ask me "who is this" which does not bother me because that is my fault.
Some people have limitation in saving numbers that is why they need to delete old numbers to save new contacts/numbers. Multimedia phones have large number to save contacts.
We delete those contacts which we consider useless as you did it but when/if someone from your deleted numbers call you, you are also going to ask him/her "who is this" and I think that happens with everyone.
They would have considered your number useless because they use it seldom and when you called them they asked you "who is this".

Most of the time I do not pick up wrong number because most of them are wrong numbers specially if they are mobile number and I pick up landline numbers because they can be from institute, bank, company means regarding official work.
I do not know number of contacts I have but I think it would be around 200 to 300.
I call my friends who are present in city and message to all friends whenever possible because some of my friends can be busy in work etc that is why they cannot pick up my phone that is why I think messaging is good way of being in touch with family and friends.

hi prof. I don't think my phone is can stored 2000 names in my phone book. If someone called that not in my list I just send sms to ask who is the caller. Sims cards here are very affordable that's why one person have all sim cards from different networks.

I also have lots of phone numbers deleted in my cellphone already, professor.
They are those people that i have no connection anymore, like the carpenter who did this , the contractor of our company who made this, etc.
They are connected to me just for the duration of the projects or for a one time dealing, so i deleted them.
Though here we always connect thru SMS because it's cheaper than calling, professor.

Professor Brother:
I save the number of people with whom there may be future contacts. I do not save the numbers of call taxi drivers who come to take us day after day. But in my cell phone --I do not know why --though I have saved an individual's number when he calls I get the number only and not his name. I have to find out the reason for this. Your idea of keeping important numbers only is really good. I compare it with the railway slogan "less luggage; more comfort".

Professor Brother:
yes. we may require phone no.s of auto or taxi drivers also. But I am referring about auto drivers in outstations where I visit for temporary stay. I do not store them.
Today my real brother -- he is also aged 67 years has come to my home after visiting Sai Baba Mandir, Mylapore. He had arranged for free distribution of prasadams to people by paying money. After that he came to my house --he is now here --after so many days --normally when we go over to other's house we return back immediately. I think this sort of visits is necessary to strengthen to brotherhood.

I lost my phone then all contact numbers saved in there are gone. I bought a new phone but i just save some numbers from closed people only. i have no way to get back all contact number also.
I am very lazy to type text so that rarely i send sms. My phone is just for listening only, i don't often reload money for it...

2000 numbers is a lot of people. I doubt that I have 25 numbers stored. I keep what I need and if I don't talk to a person regularly, I delete it. If I am expecting a call from a business (doctor, insurance, etc) then I'll answer whoever calls, but if I'm not expecting anything like that, I don't answer unless I know who it is. All my contacts are listed by name, so I know if it's someone I don't know because it will be a number instead of a name.

When the number of numbers gets up that high it is hard to keep track and maybe they are having the same problem. You don't really know what another person's life is like on their side. I don't have a cell phone and I try to keep a hard copy of my contacts as well as on my email account. I do always check lnadline incoming call number. If I don't recognize the number I usually don't answer. I figure it will got to voice mail and I can listen to it, evaluate it, and call back or not at my own discretion.

hi professor,
i guess there is more than a hundred in my phonebook, mostly clients of the office and some suppliers. i have family members there as well as friends.
i make a written list of all those in a notebook so that when the cellphone crashes, i will have something to fall on to.
i would only probably delete if the cellphone would say "full".
have a nice day.

I hate also those who have a lot of Cellphone numbers and simpacks esp those who oftentimes change their Simpacks for what reason I don't know. That is why when someone is texting or calling me with their numbers not registered in my contact I simply ask them "who's this please or call them"if they reply telling their real name, that's the time I will receive their call and respond to their SMS.
I have an experience before, this woman pretend to be a friend of mine, and later used my SMS to blackmail me, I hate her even today..........A devil woman!
So this time, i am very much careful in responding to SMS. Be careful guys!

What you did is correct, why should you carry the contact numbers of those who ask "who are you"? Moreover, I think its difficult to carry 2000 numbers and to remember all of them. Its always good to have few good friends and keep in contact with them.
