On 4/2/2012 the 72 year privacy ban expired on the 4/1/1940 US Census. All of the cards are available to the public now. A couple different sites are working on indexing them so you can search by name, but until then, you can find what you need if you know the address of the person you're looking for.
I found my husband's dad's census card so far and my grandmother's. I sent out the word to my family to get some approximate addresses of the rest of my grandparents to get their cards as well. If you do any type of genealogy, it's fun stuff. And to me it's just interesting in general. Turns out, my husband's grandparents earned $650 in 1939 (which is about $10,730 in today's money) but only paid $18 a month in rent for their apartment. That's less than 3% of their income for housing.
Anyway, here's where you can get started on the US National Archives site:

The 2 major websites currently indexing them for name searches are https://www.familysearch.org/ which is run by the Mormons and is completely free and http://www.ancestry.com/ which is a private business and decidedly not free. Anyone else into genealogy?
