I'm sure you're familiar with the saying, "dogs are man's best friends". I'm a bit intrigued about this because besides having dogs as pets, there are also cats, hamster, rabbit, insects, turtles, mouse, snakes, and many other types of animals that are man's friends or pets. So why did man choose a dog as his "best friend"? What is it in a dog that makes man choose him among the rest?

That's because it is proven that of all the animals, dogs are the most faithful of all pets.
Stories has been told of how a dog saved their master from dying by attracting attention of people by barking loudly when their master suddenly become ill.
And there are dogs who leads their blind master when walking in the streets.

Oh yes, I heard a lot of stories like that. It's amazing how a dog and his master could have such a close relationship and such concern for each other. ONce when my dog was terribly sick and was feeling cold, I even dress it up with one of my shirt and everyone had a laugh seeing us together.

Yes, my dog "was" loving and loyal. Didn't I tell, he passed away a long time ago.
We had a lot of good memories of that dog, and we had other dogs in the past that also became very close to us. We don't actually own a dog nowadays though...:)

This was started ages ago. When I hear this I get an image of a guy with a fishing pole slung over his shoulder and his dog at his side on the way to the water hole. Or an old man on a porch rocking chair with his pipe on his lip and his old dog laying on the floor next to him. This may have been used as a caption on a painting. Maybe someone knows the origin here.
I had a dog for seventeen years and he was indeed awesome. But my cat's are great too. I am never without a cat. There is always one with me. If you treat them with love, they will follow you around, sleep with you, push you off your pillow, sit on your lap and stare at you adoringly. An old saying is usually just that, an old saying. But those old timers who made up those sayings don't realize what or who they hurt.

I also used to have a cat, and we also loved having them around. They are cute and adorable, and so nice to pet and hug. They could be playful too like a dog, but I don't like their tendency to steal food.
Maybe it would be safe to say that next to the dog, the cat is man's second best friend.

Sorry, I mean stealing food from their master's table...lol. I remember our cats do that when we left food on our table and forgot to place them in the refrigerator or at least place some lid over them.

I have six cat's. You mean from the other cat's? My dog used to growl at the cat's who came near him when he was eating. My cat's don't, they each get their own dish and have no need to steal food off of each other, they all eat peacefully at their own dishes.

Dogs are chosen or considered as "man's best friend". I think it's because when you are an owner of a dog, a dog will be close to you. When you feed your dog, it's happy because of the kind gesture you are showing to it. If you love your pet dog, it will also love you in return. When you come home from work, it will happily come near you and kiss your leg or wag its tail because it is excited to interact with you. It also wants to protect you from other people. So, if there are some strangers around, it will keep on barking until you tell it to stop because you'll tell it that you know the person he is barking at. Your pet dog will always be loyal to you.
For some other people, dogs are their best friends because they might be alone in their lives. If some people live a bit away from their families, they have their pet dogs with them who'll stay with them all the time. They are happy being together in one home. They do some activities together like taking a walk, going to the park and other places they want to go. The owners and dogs love and accompany each other. For others, their dogs are their best friends, maybe especially for some who are blind. There are some trained dogs who assist their owners to cross the street so it would be easier for them to go to places. There are also what we call "hearing dogs" which can help deaf people to be alert or be aware of what are happening around them. When the hearing dog looks at something it hears, the deaf person would also notice it and turn to see what is going on.
When you observe dogs too, you can see in them different kinds of emotions too, just like us, people. You can see from their faces when they are happy or sad. I think they're like us that's why they are considered as man's best friend. They also help their owners in many ways. When they are around, men can sleep feeling safe and sound because they know that their pet dogs are around to protect them from harm.

I would have to agree with you, lady1993. I had pet cats and dogs before but I would say that my bonding with my pet dogs are much deeper than those of my pet cats.

Because he won't bite us the person who take care of him, he will protect us with his life, he is very loyal and won't stab us in the back, he will be very sad when we are sick and he will be happy when we are happy, he is not only a pet but he is part of the family.

Yes, I have heard of stories of dogs becoming depressed when their masters die and because of their deep depression, they too pass away a few days after. That is one reason why my dad and mom don't want any pets anymore...they become sad when our dogs pass away and die. There is too much attachment that usually happens between a man and his pet.

I hope I can watch that movie...I would try to check where I can find that movie. Thanks for sharing! I would say their loyalty is one of the main reasons why they are man's best friends.

I think that this has been a saying because of the dedication and loyalty that a dog has for its owner. A dog adores their owner and wants to please them all the time. When the owner is gone they wait for them to return and are so excited just to see them coming down the street. They tend to be a loyal companion their entire life. And dogs get this title, because its much stonger of a bond between a man/girl and their dog.

Yes, we've seen this type of relationship between a dog and his master depicted in many different films and also in real life. And we could also say they can reduce one's stress a lot!

What other pet can act as a Guard dog, a sniffer dog, a watch dog, a cattle dog, a guide dog, police dog, and a gentle pet for the kids? Dogs have a bigger brain, and can be trained to do more things for their human companion that any other creature.

Yes, it's amazing that dogs are one of the easiest animals to train. I hope I can train a dog to continue my online jobs whenever I leave the house...that would be sooo cool :D

Yes, I have heard a lot of stories about dogs saving not only their master's lives but also those of others. I would say dogs show a lot of loving emotions, and they even kiss humans by licking them...yuck! lol.

Probably because the dog is the only animal that can be manipulated by human beings, you can kick it, beat it up, push it aside, force it to follow you and stay with you when every human being already walks out of you. Dogs need a group to live in and see you as a part of it. They have way less character as cats, most pets are not interested in their owner and that is what we want: be in the middle of the center of all attention!

Yes I agree you could manipulated dogs by beating it up, but the relationship would generally be that of fear...the dogs obey because of fear. I want to show love to my dogs and that way I can always feel there return that with love as well.
Anyway, you are right that pets are interested in their masters. God made human beings above all animals of the land.

I think there are two factors involved here. One, dogs are pack animals. When they look at you, they don't see you as a member another species. They see you as a member of their pack.
Two. In packs, there is a hierarchy. There is the top dog. A leader. Packs are not leaderless, and he looks at you as leader of his pack. The fact that you don't pee on trees, or fire hydrants confuses him. He doesn't understand why you don't do it so he does it for you.
If you're mean to your dog, he doesn't care and he'll lay on his back and expose his belly to you (a sign of submission) because that's pack behavior but if you run into trouble, he'll come to your defense.
That's why they're man's best friend.

You have good explanations here why dogs are good friends, rayf. I have a feeling you're talking about your own experience with your own dog :)
Thanks for sharing! Anyway, fire hydrants confuses him and so do thunder and lightning confuses him. I remember watching The Simpsons and while Homer was talking to his dog, all the dog can hear was "blah blah blah blah" so I would say Homer confuses dogs as well. :D

I think any animal can be our human's friends if we get along with them for a period of time. And I think dog and horse are the most intelligent and friendly animals. They can be friendly with human quickly, even a short time of twinkling, they will know the people is good or bad to them. And they even can secrifice themselves to protect their master. I want to keep a dog thirstly, but my mom don't approve of keeping one.

I also heard about horses being friendly and intelligent as well. I guess it would be easier for most people to own a dog than a horse. I also think that animals have stronger senses than people. Like dogs, for example, can tell easily if you're afraid of them or not, and the more afraid you are the more they may bark at you.
Isn't it amazing how animals and people can develop such loving bond with each other that it often leads to sacrificial love? I can also see that with man and sea animals like dolphins...amazing!

Dogs are more of the type to me soley dependant of you. They will always be there for you. If you notice dogs always follow their owners around just waiting for a comand. That is kind of why people have said that a dog is a mans best friend. Cats and other animals i would say are a little more independant.

Yes, definitely when I have a dog in the past they always follow me even when I jog outside the house. They follow me while I'm eating or just walking around the house. Cats are more lazy and would rather sit in a comfy place of her choice.
