My grandmother always told me the richest people in the world are the poor because they are rich in love. The wealthy people care only about money, cars, status and so on, they forget about the simple things in life, like seeing your baby smile, watching a butterfly, sharing your peanut butter sandwich with a friend and so on.
Do you agree or disagree and why

this is a lovely and poignant topic winterrose! thank you! i grew up in a family without money and my mother always told me we were rich in love! and she was right! today i am very thankful for the richness in nurturing i received and still do from my parents. then one day, my mom and i saw a movie called rich in love starring robert duvall. it was very good, you should check it out if you haven't seen it! my mother refers to it often, as robert duvall told his daughter they were rich in love, in a very southern accent, so my mother likes to mimic him! we are from the south too, so it is okay!

Hi Winter,
All you say is so true. Raising my girls on my own, there were times when we were so dirt poor that I honestly worried about where our next meal would come from. We went without enough things at times...things that many take for granted that we learned to appreciate. At one point, we lived with my youngest daughter's father in this big house where each girl had her own room. There was a huge yard and it seemed like a castle at first. It kind of was but the "King" was a miserable man who spread his misery. Unable to stand it, the girls were begging me to find our own place again. We discussed it and I reminded them that if we did this that their lifestyle was going to change drastically and that we'd once again be "poor". My 2nd daughter who at the time was maybe about 12, spoke up and said, "Mom, ya know, I don't actually remember ever "feeling" poor when it was just us." The others quickly agreed and so our decision was made. We moved and I continued on raising them on my own and she was right. Financially we may have struggled some but we got what we needed and sometimes on a good week...a bit more and no regrets at all. We had love and that counts for a lot!

I lived with my grandmother who was dirt poor. My parents never married and neither of them wanted me. My mother whom I hardly knew said she would take me to live with her when I was 10. She tried to entice me by saying she had carpets on the floor. Of course we had nothing. I told her we good put blankets on the floor. I knew no one could love me like my grandmother. It is a story in my book, I called it living like rich people.

what a cool, bittersweet story! Your gram must have been quite a lady! She took over and raised you not just out of duty but obviously a lot of love. Her love is reflected in you. Do you know how many kids would have just gone with the parent who had more "material things" to give? You were able to see that love was more important. Good for you for not breaking your gram's heart! Did your mother ever become a part of your life?

I just realize right now that it is damn true. Most likely poor people are low-profile and sporting a soft-heart compared to majority of rich people. I agree your grandmother I guess one of the people I described above...

My point exactly, the more the rich men have, the more they want. They spend an important part of their time on making money and cann't lead the life that the average people lead. This is why some say money doesn't always bring happiness.Conversely, the poor leads a hard life, but most of them have the pleasures of family love and comfort.

Totally agree with you , your grandmother would not have told this without experience.Rich are rich because of their money(Not all rich) and poor are rich because of their character!..Richness of character is real rich and not in terms of money..Happiness has nothing to do with money , it can be anywhere there is love..Love is the really cause for happiness and yes noted it right that they know what to 'Share' and how to share with what they have.

I believe it's a common phrase, but it doesn't necessarily ring true. Rich people have loads of live and enjoy their babies and nature as much as the poor person. Money is a tool. You can be rich or poor in money and still be a living person. I believe everyone who has love for people and nature are rich. I also believe everyone who lives God is rich in things that really matter in life. Money doesn't make you happy. I've never been rich but I made a good living and a good income never brought me lasting joy. I didn't have to be poor to appreciate life.

that is true, there are a lot of genrous rich people but giving someone 1,000 when you have millions to me doesn't make up for giving someone a half of your sandwich when you have nothing else to eat. That is a sacrifice of love

Hi winterose, I totally agree with your grandmother...She is
a very smart lady...
I think there are a big differenc in wealthy in items, things,
materialistic things. But there is also wealthy in character,
which is what your grandmother is talking about,,
You can believe that most of the people who is wealthy in materialistic
things are happy in their heart...They are missing out on a lot..
Don't get me wrong, finances are great but the heart has to be
able too feel, enjoy, life...having morals and showing love makes
you feel uplifted...its a beautiful thing...
Oh by the way , I love watching butterflies,,,does that tell you
where i am in this world,,,,lol

I agree that most "rich" people only see the possesions they have, or lack there of, like the saying "Keeping up with the Jones". But not all rich people are like this. I am on Goverment Housing and I understand that almost half of the donations are from private persons, not the Goverment. So, I say, "God Bless those that do Good with their Riches by donating to the poor."

yes this is a generalization, the are of course many loving and giving rich people, but also remember those donations though they help for sure, are also tax deductions, so they are not completely altruistic.

well, youre right the most richest person are the poor because of their love affection to each other , but lets just face the reality that those people will still need a money for them to survive and nowadays the living status of poor people are more consumable than the middle and the first class.. so they must live or die for it to be a truly rich person..

Rich people has different life style from the poor.Maybe the poor people are easy to get happy, while rich people establish their happiness on better social status or more luxury stuff. But we can not say rich people are lacking of love.We can see a lot of rich people doing charity to help the poor and disabled people.

_i'm proud to be poor because one day i can help people like me not because i will have a lot of wealth but becase i know how it feels to have nothing:)

I disagree. Because if people that you mean rich are financially free, that would mean they have the time of the world to be with their loved ones. If you mean poor that are also financially free, it's the same thing. But if you mean people who are rich because they have a high paying job but is not financially free, I would have to agree on you--besides this group of people are still poor under my category. They've traded their freedom with money--which is not right for me.

the statement really means that if you love you are rich, it doesn't mean money can make you love or you even know how to love necessarily. Much research has been done on rich kids who said they never really felt love from their parents, there parents gave them everything money could buy but they were never around for one reason or another. Many of the kids were sent to boarding schools in other countries and so on.
So if you know how to love you are rich, and that mean you can be dirt poor but you still are rich because you can love

I see that we understand differently on this matter. Let me, rephrase my last response. People who can't balance time and money always end up with a broken family or a lonely life. People who had more money usually lack in love because they don't have the time to be with their loved ones. Those people who lack money but had too much love had to leave their loved ones in order to give them a good future. As a result, their relationship becomes stagnant due to lack of communication and personal presence of the other.
In my opinion, as long as a person don't have the ability to balance both time and money is someone I pity because that person is poor. But if that person has the proper knowledge and capacity to hold onto both is someone I look up to because that person is rich in abundance and love and knows how to keep it and spread it around.

Well, I can't agree with you, winterose. In my opinion, those who only cares about money , cars, status, etc generally can't get what they dream about. 'cause they are distracted from devoting themselves to their careers. On the contrary, the richest people commonly don't regard wealth as something vital. Take Bil Gates for example, even this guys is the richest man in the world, he donated millions of dollars to charity instead of being a mean guy. Moreover, he nearly left nothing to his children in his will. Warren Buffett almost did the same. Actually, I can summerize my thought in one sentence-when clenching your fist, there is nothing in it;but when opening your hand, you can get the whole world.

first of all it was a generalization, and it is about love, bill gates donates and he is a good man no doubt but he claims it back in tax shelters. This expression is about being rich in love, not really money because poor people don;t have money but they have love and love is more important than money. Of course rich people can love only a lot of them or more interested in making money. Bill gates is an exception because he will never have to worry about money because he is super rich, but people who are are playing the stock exchange have more worries than you can every dream about. These people often put money first beyond their families and everything else.

erm...I don't know... i think they are still happy since they enjoy many luxury things, they can go to sea, take long holidays, sleep on a luxury bed, etc...
As me, i am the poor then whenever i want to travel...i have to do save money for a year and then just live in normal hotel. You know i want to go to massage 3 months ago, but till now i haven't done it yet..because of my limit budget...then being poor is not good at all.

I agree that no one is truly poor if they have love, family, people who they care about and those who care about them.
However, I have to disagree that rich people only care about money, cars, status and so on. Why do people just assume that rich people are like that? I'm sure they love just as financially poor people love. I'm sure they appreciate things other than money such as nature, family, friends. They also have people who they care about and those who care about them. Just because money is a part of their lives it doesn't mean that it's all they care about. That is just an assumption made by people who don't have great financial wealth themselves.

this was just a generality, about both classes, some poor people are miserable and so unhappy they want to end their lives, this was just a general statement.
But people who have lots of money want more money, it seems like the big bankers it is never enough.

yes- my feelings exactly. i do not care about money- i just want enough to live comfortably- to have a roof over my head and to make sure my kids are taken care of.
i cannot stand this sickness of greed in our culture - especially among professional athletes. sports figures who only care how much their contract is for.
there are more important things in life such as personal and spiritual growth and awareness.
i am not impressed with rich people- i never will be- it is what kind of a person they are that matters, not the size of their bank account.
there are rich people who are really good people- like bill gates who cares about people and is very generous with his money.
who you are matters much more than how much you have.

i agree with you hawkwind81, about the prevalence of greed and the salaries of sports figures, and i would like to add, politicians! it is so noticeable that the salaries of people who help others in more tangible ways are lacking, while those people continue to increase salaries...also, government funding for people programs continues to be cut and politicians salaries do not!
